Good game, but remember its just one game, T20 is fickle

KW got revved up and he responded, great. Id rather in 3 innings he got 15 from 10, 4 from 1 and 30 from 20, rather than three 40's from 50

Santner was very good, the commentators seem to love him, he is genuine. Sodhi got stick but a key wicket, Boult was well, Boult.

Back to reality, we won by only 12 runs. Santner turned a wicket into a 6, although thats sort of offset by Sodhi bowling a very poor ball yet getting a wicket. 12 runs aint much, especially when ENG were needing 12 an over a good way out, and it could easily have been done. One  ball here one ball there and its 17 from the last 2 overs and a win for ENG

You do remember Sodhi taking a blinder off Santner, then the next over Sodhi bowls to get the guy slogging, straight down his throat and Santner drops it :-). ROFL. He got a scolding from the commentators there. I reckon he wanted to retain #1 ranking, thats the sort of guy he is, pompous.

Not all the commentators were happy smithy thinks Santners a slacker int he field and has dropped a lot of important catches in the last few years. Also keep in mind Sodhi removed the big wicket. Santner comes on for the tail and gets 2.

Thats cricket, but I think Santner got lucky with his wickets due to some great catching, Sodhi got unlucky and should have had 3. Who cares, they go well together. I more about when Santners asked to bat, will he follow suit with Williamson.

Yes we barely win, they are missing 3 key players and Roy didnt fire.

I think if they were smart to Santner they would take one step down the pitch and turn every ball he bowls into a full toss, thats what McCullum would do to a guy who bowls a good line and length and doesnt change the flight or speed THAT much, hes predictable. BUt hes getting away with it.

Had to feel sorry for DGH, first ball smacks and Michael Jordan jump 4 feet in the air to catch it. Wow DGH is instantly on with his eyes. Munro is getting obvious that he only plays leg side. He needs to move around the crease to give himself room to play straight or on the off until they relent his big gap that he likes. Really cant wait for Chapman and Siefer to be in the middle order when we need them, thats been our problem but that didnt get tested.

Boult and Southee finally learning the art of the yorker, even the wide ones a good one. Again though, like Santner, if its all you bowl, players will just take 1 step down for 6.

Damned Aus game will be a rain out surely with the recent weather?

Edit: NO, the Cricket Gods have opened a Window of one day of Sunshine. :-) http://www.metservice.com/towns-cities/auckland/auckland-central

Santner did not have a good night in the field, that's for sure. He possibly should have been on the boundary for that first catch too? He almost certainly would have got it if that was the case.

Very uncharacteristic of Southee to drop a catch like that. Maybe the lights at the cake tin are a bit difficult?

Any other ground in the country DGH would have hit that for 6. that straight boundary at the cake tin is massive.

Agree

Santner varies the ball in flight and speed, all the time, I dunno how many times Ive heard that said from the commentary box. Twice last night he was called brilliant, once by Bumble. Sodhi's wicket I think it was Hales, was a bad bad bad ball, he got lucky. They all said that, it was a poor ball and you saw it on his face

I could say Sodhi hit punished but that happens in T20 to anybody

But as yo your comment, thats true. This is as bad as the Politics threads, all bias.

re the game, DeG failed, thats ok, Munro too thats ok, so we do have a bit of extra oomph there, over and above the score we got last night

I wish the ICC would tighten the rules on shape and dimensions of a cricket ground so they stop playing internationals on the joke that is Eden Park.

Well Santner dropped a sitter and completely didnt even pick up on another. Im just saying he needs to be able bowl. He is selected as a bowler/batsman, so hopefully now we have a good line up we wont have rely on his batting but if he does he got the same stick as Kane re run rate.

He just looked so, I dont care when he dropped the catch and didnt even bother with the missed one. So yes Im criticising his fielding, its terrible. Something he needs to keep working on and care about.

His bowling looked like it was going to finish reasonably good eco until his last over with the tail and Sodhi took that good catch. So I think he got very lucky himself.

Sodhi bowling bad balls is often bait, thats why he has a higher SR bowling and a higher Eco. You need both, bowlers who can slow the run rate and bowlers who take wickets, if Sodhi wasnt a wicket taker there is no way he would be close to 3 in the world (would have been 1 if Santner had taken the catch lol).

So its win win, providing Santner gets a right reving about his fielding ethic and somebody is still in their ear about run rate as hes the last of the blockers who were keeping our middle order, but I feel thats a recent thing as his SR suggests better, but then so does Kanes. Didnt Kane take getting the wooden spoon on the bottom to heart lol, some of his shots were nuts. And Guppy just looked like he is too much for any opposition, lets hope he can pull off another big one with the aussies and munro learns how to put bowlers off their line and how to hit offside.

I feel that team is the best team we are going to get in T20s and possibly ODIs. Chapman and Siefert considering on debut smacking it for 6 from the get go, clearly the middle order sorts we need and next time DGH will aim 1foot higher. Damn I admire that catch but I just heard the noise and thought six first ball. I think hes our new BmCull and could possible swap him for munro but shuffle the order down 1. Or you could gamble and not stagger and put Gup, Munro, DGH, Chapman, Siefert, Southee, Williamson. Taylor, Santner, Sodhi, Boult. LOL. Wouldnt that hurt some feelings, but if you follow Daddy Mac No Fear game plan, thats what you would do.

Yeah Eden park boundaries are a bit short but they arent the only ground in Aus/NZ to be 60m ish to the sides. And it makes for better T20 anyway, should be saying well done Auck Rugby and EP for being the Lords of NZ RUgby and Cricket in NZ and back to the days when you didnt buy players out of Province, so Auck can win 5 years in a row again. Uggh another topic, something that annoys me about the Storm in league, they are a Franchise not a club. Super Rugby is very much the same. Lets say Wellington win this year, Wellington didnt win, the Hurricanes did and they have very little to with being wellingtonians. Its like We now associate this professional sport with it being from OUR province. I was saying this way back when the Blues were good at super rugby a couple decades back.

You can have you own opinions but not your own facts.

Sodhi (and Rashid) miss their length and it's bait, Santner gets hit for 6 and its bad bowling. Sodhi takes a regulation catch and it's a blinder? Santners dropped catch was awful, Southee's was even worse but we can't talk about that because it it was another wicket that Santner would have taken.

If we are talking about facts, Santners worst over was about as good as 3 off Sodhis overs. He also bowled 2 overs in the powerplay and went for 14 (plus 2 leg byes). Both Santners wickets were specialist batsmen, and Malan was the key wicket to seal the win.

Stating that Santner deliberately dropped a catch to keep his top bowling spot because he's pompous, for which you have no evidence, is just a rank personal attack and quite frankly it's disgusting. As for your last paragraph, well I really have no idea what you are on about.

Lol disgusting, steady on its not something to be so insulted over, its clearly cynicism/sarcasm, a JOKE. Talk about easy to wind up.

It is a fact Sodhi is a better spinner, nobody in NZ cricket denies that, what Santner is in the team for is Bowling Batsman, and it also states that on his player card. He has 3 variances, speed, distance and how many RPMs, not tricky, no better or worse than any other finger spinner. He largely comes on to bowl to the tail, like he did to get his 2 wickets in his final over. And NZ havnt had the hardest competition for him prior to Eng and now Aus.

Sodhi goes for runs because he is tall for a spinner and its hard to get the loop Stuart Mcgill or Warne did, nonetheless he bowls all 4 deliveries along with the added variances Santner bowls. He disgusies his reverse spin very well and even that spins more than Santner can with his fingers. Thats why leg spinners are so valued. Perhaps ya'll just have never seen a leg spinner as hes our first international at the level that could make him a great. He also comes on early, so his wickets are more valuable, hence his RPO but also his better SR at taking wickets. If he was left for the tail he too would have a low SR and probably take the entire tail. Santner is bowling to non destructive batsman for a reason, they know all they have to do is take one step down and its a full toss, half folly at worst. And I think thats wise how they use him. Or after a wicket has fallen, to get his overs out and the run rate down.

Both have their place, but Santner isnt to just bowl line and length, its to average 30 with the bat, which he is not doing in ODIs and Tests. I do hope he gets some one on one coaching as he can clearly bat when he wants to, but we need it in situations to help win matches.

Dont blow the Santner/Sodhi thing out of proportion, it is what it is, 1 and 3 right now and thats a good thing.

If it was a choice of just one genuine spinner Sodhi would be getting more games in ODIs and Tests, but Santners batting keeps him promising more which he consistently is letting us down at key times, like I said, I hope it improves.

Anyone going to Friday nights game? Thats the real test whether we are #1 still or not. Going to be brilliant with short boundaries. Aus dont bat as deep as Eng so if Boult, Southee and Sodhi can get the big 4 out cheap, we in with a good chance.

How has Williamson lost this?

Instruction to bowlers, bowl yorkers 1foot wide of off. Every delivery until they pick then on stumps.

How did we not learn batting that bowling line and length = 6.

Williamson is the most ridiculous captain in T20 and ODIs. In tests hes a Fleming. Bring back a Mccullum captain, no fear.

After tonight's game (notwithstanding NZ's woeful bowling performance) I rest my case.

what, t20 is about fours and sixes but what you want a test ground? dont be foolish.

finch was a bit of a sad sack when guptil walked off for a full toss but he hung around, tool. short got dropped and edged his first 4 boundaries.

great game. well done aus.

not enough yorkers at wide length outside Boult, he seems only one who understands t20. is it really that hard to understand as an international player when you see what good bowlers do? but williamson needed to enforce it.

love the game. nz might drop to #3. we will see.

guptil century is WOW. no IPL? clowns.

Guptil is not great against spin

Wheeler way out of his depth sadly, he will feel like a broken man tomorrow.  We really paid for not having the second spinner.
