Bizarre game.

Only positive, Warriors won the last 67min of the game, they gotta stop giving away so many penalties at tackle 4-5. Cant see side to side who is jumping the 10m.

I wonder if Badger was gun shy for sin bins today vs the controversial game last week which got her a LOT of hate mail during the week due to the sin binning fever.

Roosters could lose 2-3 players during the week on report.

ironic I thought he was the only one who might escape, but live I thought how is that not a penalty. Kasey Badger copping more heat supposedly. Whats the point, the game is over.

But we are without Johnson who was definitely chicken wing tackled by Keary. Two weeks is not as bad as it looked, I thought a tear for certain.

On another note, the Warriors are playing the same brand of footy as last year, exactly the same strategy's. That is not the difference. Its pretty obvious having only 40% of your starting 17 is going to have a major impact, especially on fitness and defense but also just experience, which is the main cause for us giving away so many penalties late in the tackle count, inviting the opposition to score points. We need to execute our own plays but we really need to concentrate on not giving away penalties, especially on 4th and 5th tackle.

Im not writing them off yet. Panthers are missing Cleary and we are missing SJ. Then we have the Dolphins who I think we can beat.

What all these injuries has forced is to use our awesome "Reserves", CNK will move from FB to I assume 6 and TMM to 7 awesome use of CNK, Taine Tuapiki who is TMM's counsin from that little town of a couple hundred on the East Coast, gets another go at FB after being very impressive in the first 3 games. CNK taking the line on will be something interestng to watch with his power and speed, but also whether Tuapiki can link up with the halves as hes got speed close to Metcalfs and he just seems to be evasive with ball in hand.

Rocco Berry joins the long injury list with a fractured hand. So with RTS also injured, one of my fav players. Ali Leiataua will finally get to show his stuff in the centres alongside Pompey. Pompey isnt a flashy centre, but hes a good reserve grade player of first grade quality, strong on defense and he was very good in the conversion kicking.

If it comes down to golden point I don't know who will take the drop goal attempt, I assume TMM.

Lussick joins the injury list. We should get most of our good players returning around the same time as SJ as we get the bye soon which couldnt come at a better time.

Oddly, with all those players injured, the team listed to play, actually looks half way decent. You are always going to miss last years best HB in SJ, but Im intrigued to see how they adapt with CNK 6 TMM 7 and whether they change strategy to suit these changes and young less exprienced players, but also to get Tuapiki running into a hole. Id also like to see us running off the hip of guys lik aFB who can deliver a late offload to put somebody like Tuapiki into open field play. The roosters essentially scored via unstructure football, similar to how the warriors of old use to just chuck the footy around, it paid off, but they got a telling off about reigning it in by their Coach as it nearly let use back into the game with us bombing two tries over the try line. BUT I would like to  see us back players up, running in twos, and offloading when it is on, which is very different to forcing the offload.

Montoya returns who is good under the high ball and very experienced, not the best defender, but wingers all have bad defensive stats due to the nature of the position on the field.

If we can get a couple more wins before half way in the season, there is no reason we cannot finish top 8, even top 4, if the return of that very long list of injured starters returns and when executing this strategy of "Force Back" we need to be more switched on in defense not to give those penalties away which is what is costing us matches.

We have some good experience to help the young players this weekend with the likes of Walker in the backs and Tohu in the forwards.

Lets Gone Wahs.

Tuapiki is going to find it very hard against the panthers line defence on kick returns. Panthers are one of the strongest in the league at putting pressure on fullbacks. Should be an awesome weekend & atmosphere at magic round too. All 3 days are sold out, over 140,000 tickets sold. Would love to go to one in the future

That's what all NRL fans want to hear. Despite so many teams, the standard is much higher when they culled and combined squads. I still feel hard done by as a Central Coast Leagues Club member, Manly essentially didn't honor anything about the Bears. Now we have far more Clubs that have no history to NSW RL. I think the amount of high quality Kiwi players throughout the league is part of the reason it can sustain such a high standard.

I think Tane has proven to me he can handle the jandle. He seems to get quite high off the ground for a little bloke. But their is just some dimensions there which are hard to overcome against a much taller player. But one thing to keep in mind, if a player is looking to contest the ball, but pulls out, even if they miss the catcher, they will be penalised. I get the intent behind the rule but looks very odd when a player jumps and just flies passed but gets penalised. The other thing is despite having a good option to replace Cleary, he really is irreplaceable.

I was a bit sad when CNK was coming back as Tane proved to be such a good FB, I think he has a big future ahead of him, but Id love to see him move to #6 eventually, he would make a great running half. Just needs to work on his draw and pass skill set and kicking, Im positive he has an under developed kicking game. I did think they might leave CNK at FB and play Tane at 6, but they are going with experience in that pivotal role.

These young guns might just show up the starting crew, we know Tane is solid and a good runner but Ali Leiataua could quite easily put o performance making it hard to drop him at centre. Hes got all the skills but if CNK draws and passes to ali, he aint passing, hes stepping inside and fending, he is so hard to stop close to the line, which is not something we have seen from our centres, which surprises me as Rocco is a strong sizeable player and RTS has all that footwork. ali is a bit of both of them.

Man for man I think we have them in the forwards and our bench Dylan Walker, ale, Tevaga and the impressive young Jacob Laban, thats a bench that will provide our Props and big back rower Barnett some respite. Its an oddly good looking team given we are down to the dregs, but pretty blimmin tasty dregs I gotta say. and its at home so Im giving us an outside chance on this one. Without SJ they may just resort to throwing the ball around a bit more too. But sticking to our strategy, Dylan Edwards is the player to target and shut down with the bomb, the guy is X factor dangerous in broken field play. It will be interesting to see if this reserve grade side can do a number on the Panthers by proving themselves to the coach with stella performances, its not often you get a crack that far behind other players in the squad.

aFB needs to dominate over our incoming top 3 Proper James Fisher-Harris.

Warriors need to hang tough.

Penrith losing Cleary is a big loss, like our 6 TMM, they have Luai who imo is the best running back in the game but now has to play 7 like TMM. They do have Jack Cole at 6 who is a handy HB but he is no Luai, where CNK at 6 I think offers more. Its insane how depleted our team is yet the starting 17 are not that bad a list.

Warriors NEED this win, they have to hang in there some how. Its not season over yet but it is becoming desperate.

Edit: No Tane error kick off = instant try for Penrith.

Edit: Egan that will be him gone after accidental elbow to the head, he needs to do what Keary did and start wearing head gear. We had a chance with Egan, but unlikely withhout him he is so important to this side. No lussick available this week so Roache 3rd string gets a game. I hope Egan is back in the round where they should get 50% of the team back. CNK looks great at 6.

CNK is an awesome 6, RTS to FB like most have said and CNK to 6, or just swap TMM with CNK as TMM is an experienced FB. CNK is adding some X factor to the offensive backline. Clearly wont happen but shows we need CNK in our attack more often.

Cronk "with the Warriors a few players out", adding both Hookers thats 9 and 8 of the starting 17 and out two best players, Id say more than a "few" lol. Maybe he meant just the HIA's pulled off the field today.

Edit: there he is, Jerhome Luai, sensational for the panthers. We need RTS or CNK at 6 to do this kind of footwork.

My man young Ali Lieataua scores. Incredible Warriors bits and pieces team missing all the players keeping up with Penrith. Its the back 20min Im worried, Panthers are very fit and we have so many reserve players who have been on the reserve bench for weeks with no game time.

Edit: fantastic draw and pass from TMM with the last two tries.

MAGIC.

a team of rookies and reserves beats the 3xPremiers and current #2 on table.

Tuapiki, CNK, TMM, Lieataua just amazing.

Would LOVE to see Tuapiki moved to FB from first grade reserve and CNK move to #6. Both made that offensive and defensive line much more X factor. Tuapiki and TMM cousins from a town of a few hundred on the East Coast both went to aussie to be found and the Warriors bought them back, incredible story.

Id say Tuapiki will have teams eying him up now, I hope we can hold onto him.

It might be similar team next week, not sure if RTS will be back. Egan wont play, Lussick might.

What Ive being saying all season

Fast play, run the ball, pass the ball, offloads. MIA this year except when we get smashed on the scoreboard so just go after it, too little and way too late

Today we went after it first minute. Like we HAVE NOT done this year

As Ive been saying its about game play and strategy. Todays team obviously isnt top strength. When it was we have been poor, its about fast play and being creative. Finally.

Great win by the warriors. How good was the whole weekend of Magic round though? That sharks v roosters game was a beauty. NRL is just on another level this year, the average winning margin over the weekend was 8.63

I imagine that you saw Ivan Cleary for the first time ever in his post match interview after losing to the Warriors, you'd be forgiven for thinking he was an absolute donkey IMO. I wouldn't want to be giving that sort of 'leadership' impression to my team.

At least the Captain had the good grace to take it on the chin.

Make sure you watch Ivan's take on the match.  https://www.nrl.com/watch/matches/telstra-premiership/2024/round-11/panthers-round-11/

Commentators said Penrith made many errors, yeah they did, most were forced errors. Warriors came at them hard, took time away, they get flustered. Last season we did that a lot, took time away from the opposition. IMHO they ran harder and faster than any other game last year, thats was wins games. Solid and reliable doesnt cut it at this level. All Blacks are a classic example, they are always in your face.

Spot on as usual JPNZ, It was truly Magic. The difference from 2nd to 12th is as closer than ever which just seems impossible. The Warriors losing the 5 games by a try or less and the draw and 3 close wins is just testament to that. Could so easily be top of the table and people would praising Webbys tactics.

They are playing the exact same strategy as last year. Earn the right to play offensively by targeting the key running back with the bomb (which gives our players, usually Rocco Berry) time to get to the player on there 5-10m, then use your defensive intensity to force errors, which is where you earn the right to play offense. The point being the metres per set usually needs to be sub 50m to play offense. If you execute the strategy you end up not only tiring the opposition out but have far more tackles in the red zone than the opposition. We keep getting pinged for jumping the defensive line though, which created 4 tries in a row last week. The margin for error is not there to win, we need to be perfect on defense going forward.

Then there is what we are doing on the 5th tackle when we are close but not quite in the red zone, ie 35m.

Like I said before the game, imo 4th and 5th tackle options we need to run the ball more often, IF we have gotten to the 30m, rather than another bomb to target the outside back playmaker.

Which is what we did this game via CNK running the ball. The worse case is you usually end handing over on the 20m (which is not a terrible result). CNK is averaging 230m per game at FB, which is more than RTS did when he won Dally M FB of the year. But he lived up to what i said prematch, his intensity at 6 was incredible, as was Tuaupiki running onto line balls at speed. But it was CNK running with anger diagonally at the line that drew in the winger and created the space for the outside backs (Montoya). Then both CNK and TMM in the second half showed silky hands to draw and pass putting on another two tries. TMM managed the game very well in absence of SJ, I really think TMM is better at 7 or FB than 6, if possible.

Both Lieataua and Tuaupiki earnt their place on the field as reserves.

The injection of speed of CNK at 6, after losing Metcalf, validates running it on the last, but more so if we can get good shape swinging in an arc out wide with Tuapiki running onto CNK's pass, either going straight through or creating an overlap for our good wingers.

With Jet Cleary no longer playing outside his brother Nathan next year, it gives us so many options in the halves, SJ, TMM, Cleary, Metcalf potentially CNK or RTS, many a FB has made a great 6, ie Darren Lockyer.

With SJ out next game I hope Webby loosens up when we are around that 35m mark and gives TMM the option to step the opposition and run on the last. Create a set play for it, with all the speedsters joining in. But there still needs to be control, which is what often lets other teams back in when you are just throwing it around with no structure, thats when the 80m intercept is often seen. Mitigated by a set play on the 5th though.

Speaking of TMM and Tuaupiki, nice to see the cousins from tiny but mighty Tahroa in the Herald. Population circa 200 :-). Hopefully with our new grass roots pathways, teen kiwis arent forced to go play in aus to get noticed. It is getting the point where another NZ team could easily be filled by NZ talent, both CCH and Welli sold out. But the NRL Im sure are happy filling NSW and QLD teams with kiwis, not to mention the amount of top level players over the years for Melb. Wishful thinking.
