In my opinion a name change cannot happen fast enough.  Mark Richardson has come out in support of a name change.   The CEO for the Crusaders has said a name change had already been discussed prior to the tragic events on Friday.

Today I went to look at the floral tributes left at the Botanic Gardens and to read the messages, many of which had been written by children, and it only highlighted how utterly insensitive and stupid it would be to to continue the use of the 'Crusaders' name.

Even before this tragedy the completely inappropriate pre-match display of knights, broad swords, and horses made me cringe as it would anyone who had spent even an hour's study of what the Crusades really were.  Let's hope a change is made, & quickly.

If the franchise does not change its name it will be an utter disgrace.

10000% disagree.

Will the Chiefs be having a name change? Highlanders? Are we going to to ban every word that has any negative connotation? I understand people are emotional, but there is an increasing amount of knee jerking going on as people process through the stages of grief and I don't support this in the slightest.

Unfortunately, I suspect they will bow to a small number of vocal objectors.

Nothing the Crusaders have done has in any way supported the actions of the Crusades from the 12th Century.

I find it very questionable we have a team of predominately dark skinned males called "The All Blacks"

I find it very questionable we have a team of predominately light skinned males called "The All Whites"

Is there a problem officer?

I disagree with this. There is nothing wrong with Chief. There is nothing wrong with Highlander. The Crusades we're completely different. There emblem and mas it garb is about a terrible chapter in the World history and it is a constant reminder of of what happened.

Change the name and get on with game. It's about healing and not perpetuating division and hate.

There is nothing about the Crusaders behaviour, style of play, communications or in fact anything else I can think of that is anything to do with attacking any race, religious, sex, or creed. I have never seen them promote division or hate EVER and if I did I wouldn't support it.

Rugby promotes many strong and positive things.

I'd be ok if they removed the horses from the stadium at a push.

Remove the carry on with the crosses, swords, chain-mail and horses. The name can probably stay.

I'd reluctantly support this.

This feels like a knee-jerk reaction.

Super Rugby has been around since 1996 and look at what has happened in the world in the past 23 years - 9/11 being a big example , in that whole time I don't recall any talk of having the Crusaders change their name.

If they are going to change their name then there should be no influence behind it.

I remember when Shihad changed their name after the 9/11 attacks, because of the way it sounded. Didn't a film also think about changing it's name from the two towers, or it get delayed around that time?

I don't think the name of a sports team has much to do with what happened, and people seem to be drawing a very very long bow. Many people don't follow sports like this anyway. People seem to think NZ revolves around rugby, but many people couldn't give two hoots these days. I lost interest in rugby after much of it was only shown on pay tv and I didn't have access to that. Maybe remove the weapons from the logos, and the logo, but the actual name IMO is fine. We don't want to be too sensitive over every little thing, and have knee jerk reactions which over time look silly. I am sure there are many better example where a name change would be more appropriate in light of what has happened. It is also very subjective, and some people seem to take offense at everything.

Right now social media is on fire and people are going to any length they can to get into the lime light and pull on heartstrings. You can literally say anything and someone will be there to read it and or spread it..

What do you expect? I also recall my parents always taught me to never make decision based on emotion, cause it gets pretty irrational...

I've never really associated the "crusades" and the Crusaders rugby team...maybe I am just naïve, but it never seemed to be really about that at all...In my mind it was more akin to calling them "the old battlers" or "winner, winner, chicken dinner".

Looking at it from a view of what has happened, I can see how it seems quite inappropriate now. Much like tattoos depicting crusaders are probably not that favourably viewed when travelling the Middle East.

Actually, you can twist the Chiefs and the Highlanders exactly the way that people are trying to with the Crusaders. Chiefs have slaughtered people, Highlanders were known for cruelty. If there is a Hurricane and it kills people, will the 'canes be needing a name change?

If you try hard enough, you can get offended by anything.

Hopefully the hysteria people are feeling now will simmer down slowly as people move through the grief.

If public sentiment is still supporting a change in 6 months, then let's talk about it.

Otherwise, we are in for a LOT of name changing in New Zealand.

But surely nobody could be offended by The Blues...I mean, it's not even like they're in it for the points.

The difference is the Highlanders lost to the English. The Crusades did go to the Middle East and succeed for a time.

The issue with the name pops up every couple of years that I have seen, this is the first time it has received any real traction.
