And hopefully for many years to come.

I wonder what their research has told them about any proposed name change? I rather suspect they found there was very little support for any name change. Leaving things as they are for another season at least will give time for the heat to go out of the situation and allow any future decisions to be made without any knee jerk calmouring going on.

I have yet to come across a single Muslim person in my community which could care less about the name change or think it would be even slightly beneficial in any way (Most sentiment was the name should be retained). *One* person I spoke to suggested the horses and swords "are a bit much".

Apart from a couple of radicals, the Muslim community has been very very silent on this. That's very understandable, NZ has looked after them after the catastrophe on 15 March, and it would become awkward if there was a loud consensus to name change the AB's. So, the community has kept out of it. No one this knows what is the feeling amongst them. Isolated or annecdotal accounts are not relevant, as they have kept themselves distant from this issue. While I support no name change, the feelings of the Muslim community isn't known

I support the name change because it's weird that you have a team named after something that happened 200 years before anyone set foot in NZ.

At least the other teams are named after something relevant.

Been a lot of Highlanders in NZ has there?

I guess they will need a name change too.

The Auckland Blues name have really only been relevant if you were a fan in the last 10 years :)

My favourite is St John. I think they were part of those wars or at least similar wars. Many other names can be linked to history

To Kiwi's, St John is synonymous with caring for us. The Crusaders are crusading for all things great rugby wise and community wise. We all know that, and we know history occurred, its in books, but that is not the context St John and The Crusaders are seen in. Not till recently, and that's just by some

My Dad taught me, when in Rome...        In NZ we have an ambulance service and a rugby team that are iconic. That's all it's ever been. This is our Rome

Aside from Facebook comments from the odd Muslim (all of which I've seen have been against the change but I accept that this is just anecdotal evidence), this article is the only other thing I've personally seen and it's pretty telling, to be honest. So I don't actually know who's advocating for it, they're definitely in the minority so for now we can probably be pretty safe in keeping the name; there was that poll too, so it's pretty clear where most New Zealanders stand on this. I don't really want to go down the path of a small but vocal minority dictating things for everybody else.

As networkn said, does that mean we have to change the Highlanders too? Though there are lots of New Zealanders of Scottish ancestry, none of the fighting actually happened here. Plus on top of that, the name might be offensive to English people (sarcasm), maybe we'll have to change that as well. Considering hurricanes kill thousands of people every year, maybe we'll need to look at that too.

Yea let me know when someone self-styled as a Highlander or Celtic Warrior or whatever starts beheading people in downtown Dunnerz in the name of Scottish liberation or something.

Neither of those things the same and you know it.

The Crusaders name has always been a stretch as being relevant to the area and now it's just weirdly fetishised by some people as a 'THEY TOOK MUH TEAM NAME' talking point.

The Gunman didn't self-style himself as a "Crusader" either.

That's... completely different to the point you initially made. I was responding to that, unfortunately I'm not psychic. The Crusaders rugby team has nothing to do with that horrific act that took place, and you know it; I'm not one for guilt by association. The whole premise was silly to begin with. Very few people actually pushed for the change and yet it got more airtime than it ever deserved.

At the end of the day, it's just a sports team, and if anyone's that bothered by it, the problem lies elsewhere.

A caller on Talk back radio last night had a good point.

By not changing the name of the team, you're not giving this animal that brought about this discussion any power.

If you had changed the team name, think of the power\ego stroking you're giving the individual....through his actions, change has been made.

I'm pretty bothered by it. Mostly, because I don't see a single tangible benefit to doing it.

Ah yes, the old 'that's just what they want us to think!' excuse for doing nothing at all that might make us critically examine something we're passionate about from a dispassionate point of view.
