Handsomedan: Went to FourForty MTB park with my eldest son yesterday.

Small rain shower came through and turned it into a slippery muddy mess.
We still did a few hours of laps. No point wasting an afternoon pass.

Looks like fabulous but filthy fun. How do you get hosed down before getting in the car?

Took a change of clothes and made sure that I was sitting on a towel. Young fella went home in his undies and sat on a towel.

Bikes went onto the rack dirty.

I don't want this summer to end..... (sorry Aucklanders).

I'd be pretty happy if it started.

Just mulleted my Enduro bike.

Haven't taken it out for a good ride yet, but it doesn't appear to have done anything negative to the geometry as yet.

I've gone 27.5 front and remained 26 rear.

I have a 27.5 fork, so as my son was upgrading his front wheel (for "reasons"), I bought his old front wheel off him and fitted it today.

Looks pretty good - although not massively different. The difference between a 26" wheel running a 2.5 tyre and a 27.5" wheel running a similar 2.5 tyre isn't that great. But it makes me happy, so I'll take it.

I'll load up a pic or two once I have got it out in the garden.

Never did get around to posting pics of the mini-mullet.

So with that in mind, here it is:

Cool. Do you notice any different handling / behaviour of the larger wheel?

Maybe a slight improvement in rollover performance in rocky or rooty conditions, but really it just makes it easier to find good tyres.

Got out on my bike for the first time in weeks yesterday.

Headed up to Woodhill fairly early on Sunday morning, thinking it'd be before the crowds arrived.

Boy was I wrong! Round and round the carpark until I finally snagged the last space as an even earlier rider was leaving.

What really got to me though was the number of unskilled and uneducated riders at the park.
The lack of skill is understandable and forgivable at a public facility marketed at families, but the lack of simple etiquette really got under my skin.

Groups clustered at the entrances to trails (and exits), people stopped on trails to have a look around or a chat, queue jumpers galore! Really really sucks the enjoyment out of the sport whencommon courtesy is left at home.

And don't get me started on the number of discourteous eBikers there were yesterday! Now I like eBikes. I want one myself (but can't justify the cost). But the number of complete numpties ripping up trails on Turbo, doing 30+ km/h and weaving in and out of the slower riders getting far too close and not ringing a bell or calling ahead to let you know they're coming. I nearly got knocked off my bike a few times by these idiots. And of course, then they had zero skills when descending, so held up everyone on the way down any trails that were above a green.

Anyway - lovely day and great weather, so it wasn't a total bust. I headed out back to enjoy the surreal foggy conditions of a crisp sunny winter's morning, away from the crowds.

Can someone recommend a phone holder for my bike? It's a big phone (s23 ultra) and also pretty expensive, so I want it nice and secure. Not that I am riding hard or anything.

I keep mine in my shorts pocket.  Probably not ideal.

But for actual mounts, I reckon looking at Quadlock might be worth it.  I haven't actually used them myself, but if it can survive Danny MacAskill doing trials stuff with one to test it, should survive "normal person" riding.

Egads, in your pocket? Egads, $50 for a phone holder? I had no idea they were that expensive. Seems a lot for what amounts to occasional use, but I guess you only need it to fall out once :)

If you want one that will hold tight, you'll need to pay. Quadlock would be a choice in that category.

Cheap ones are known to fail and the slightest bump will see your expensive phone falling off to oblivion.

Personally, I also do the pocket or bag thing. But the caveat is that I am largely riding off-road and wouldn't want to impale myself on a phone mount as I go over the bars.

It's a zipped pocket so it doesn't fall out.  It's in an Otterbox case so I'm not overly concerned about it breaking.  It'll probably hurt if I land on it though.  I have been thinking about relocating it to a Quadlock mount for the more adventurous rides on the good bike, as opposed to the river trail evening training rides which are "just time and distance".

Think of the cost of the mount being an investment to hopefully prevent "that one time".  I pay $100+ for the Otterbox case for the phone that still costs $1200 or so to replace.  So $50 for peace of mind knowing it'll more than likely stay in place on your rides is probably worth it.

I only carry the phone for two reasons. To run Sportstracker and give me a way of "calling home" if I ever need to. I don't need immediate access to it while riding.

I use a foam padded soft case I bought from Dick Smith when they still had physical shops. I slide the phone into the soft case, wrap it in a plastic bag to keep it dry, and put it in the hip or rear pockets of my riding shirt. Been doing this for years, works well for me.

I think this is the answer for me as well. Will investigate that.

I see that Yamaha have entered the fray with regard top the local eBike market.

They've been supplying motors for the traditional manufacturers for a while now (Giant uses Yamaha motors in their eBike range), but now have launched a dedicated eMTB.

https://www.yamaha-motor.co.nz/e-bike/mountain/ydx-moro-07

It's a nice looking steed and is reasonable priced for the spec: $9k from a Yamaha dealer

Australian Mountain Bike have done a review, which is quite complimentary Here

For those that understand these things, the specs are as follows:

85Nm high-torque Yamaha Motor
500Wh battery
Range approx. 136km
27.5+ wheels
160mm LyriK up front
150mm Rockshox Superdeluxe rear
66.3deg HTA
Shimano XT drivetrain
Magura Hydraulic brakes

All over, it looks pretty good value by comparison to its contemporaries that are similarly specced.
