Batman: Apparently Danny Ric to Merc

My take on this:

Regular race wins at Red Bull.
Understandable desire not to play #2 driver role.
High demand.

Looked to be turning things around at Renault.
Medium demand.

Moved to McLaren abruptly and in doing so labelled himself as a flight risk.
Quickly shown up by teammate Lando and struggled with several poor cars that didn’t suit his style, but which he couldn't adapt to.
Low demand/high risk.

Reckon he'd do really well for his brand to move to nascar for a year and try to come back into a team the following year.
Honestly not sure I can see his appeal to Mercedes, unless they know something we don't.

Suzuka is going off.  Worth the wait and glad it could turn into an actual race, as looked very touch and go early on.

Also nice to see a race on at a time that suits NZ, and with Bathurst as well it's been quite the weekend.

What a tedious season. It promised so much.

Tedious in what way? That one team dominated?  Like Mercedes, RBR, Ferrari etc did before this season?

Ferrari was all over everyone else, then they weren't. Red Bull was unreliable then they weren't. End of the day the best package won even though it wasn't the fastest car or the car that dominated quali.

Its very unlikely that you will get two teams that are so evenly matched that the title goes down to the wire. This year only 6 cars could expect podiums, of that 6 only 4 could expect a win. Of those 4, 2 are sidelined as No.2 support drivers, that's F1 in a nutshell, year in and year out

The hybrid era was a complete reshuffle, it took years for Ferrari and RBR to catch up, when they did, the rules changed, and when that happens it would take time for the teams to converge. Had 2022 been of the previous hybrids, then I'd suggest that Mercedes, Ferrari and RBR would have been close

We still ended up with a title decided races in advance of the finale, after a season where it looked like the form book might have been upended.

Then Ferrari spent months shooting themselves in the foot and RBR streaked ahead.

About the only entertaining bit has been watching GR slowly lose the plot at Mercedes.

thermonuclear:

Who gets the Williams seat now, maybe Sargent over Doohan because he's an American?

Doohan is the hotter talent for sure. Sargeant didn't look like much of a prospect in F3 but really came alive in F2. Still feel like he should be taking another season to prove himself, given his placing so far is more about the inconsistency of others rather than his own.

But as you say, Doohan is not American and Sargeant is. So I think we all know how this will go.

Congrats to Verstappen. Easily the best driver + car package this year. The circus around whether or not he was actually champion or not detracted a bit from the excitement and spectacle IMO, but he didn't seem bothered. I've found him far more likeable overall this year compared to previous years - maturity and perspective definitely suits him.

The race for the Malcom Tucker Award for the most Omni of Shambles for 2022 remains firmly alive between Ferrari and the FIA. Could. Not. Believe. the tractor on the track then pointing the big finger o' blame at Gasley without any self awareness at all.

Tractors and marshalls on track happen every race though. Double waved yellows (be slow and be prepared to stop) Red Flag (be slow go back to pits be prepared to stop)  Gasly was doing 255kph in 5th gear. Could they have waited for the tractor? Yep probably. Was the race spectacle determined by getting it sorted sooner than later? yep, probably. But you DONT travel at 255kph in 5th gear in the wet when I assume there was also a yellow or double waved yellows before the red?

Wasn't the tractor on the track in the midst of spray and fog though?

Seems a bit more on the nose than extracting a vehicle from a run-off area.

It was, in a slow down and be prepared to stop phase. I assume it went from waved yellows to red and not green to red? If its ok to be at 255kph and he wasnt following spray, that would appear to be visible enough. But he should not have been at that speed.  No tractor there = no issue. No high speed there = no issue, tractor or no tractor

If it was a beautiful sunny day, same issue, yet of a driver zoomed around a bend and a tractor was there, same issue, too fast. Otherwise do we red flag every failed car, or should the drivers slow down be prepared to stop?

I feel like on the track is the key distinction here. There is a specific flag for this.

If that flag isn't sufficient or you aren't going to use it, then yes, you effectively have no choice but to red-flag a session.

Either safety matters or it doesn't. But it says a lot that many can't see the issue with Gasly caning it under yellow. Then again I've never liked Gasly.

Yes, thus begins a nice wee run of the next 3 rounds that are all Monday mornings (USGP = 8am, Mexican GP = 9am, Brazilian GP = 7am).

Pity the championship has already been decided

Gasly situation has two valid parts.

First up, shouldn't be a recovery vehicle on the track until everyone has caught the safety car snake/train, or has returned to the pits if it's a red flag situation.

It's literally been proven sadly before of the importance of this.

Second though, it's poor conditions/visibility and yellow flags, and you're approaching the area of the crash itself that brought out those yellows.

250+km/hr isn't appropriate, it's stupid.
