Wgtn v Auck - semi-final highlights

Wgtn started poorly in the comp, lost our first two matches, from there won 9 in a row, that semi-final win our best performance of the season so far... Paul Tito a former Naki & Canes player is on the coaching staff, looks like he's made a big difference in drilling our forwards really well.

That was an utterly dominant performance by the forwards for Wellington. They looked great. Aucklands discipline was pretty poor and it just helped Wellington with their momentum. Auckland and the Blues probably ended up one step further in the competition than they should have on form and discipline and it wasn't that surprising to see them get thumped. I expected a bit more of a fight than that, but kudos to Wellington for not letting them get started.

BOP really put up a very decent fight and put Canterbury under pressure. The price they paid for that though, showed in the last 20 minutes when they didn't have enough in the tank.

Wellington if they continue to play the way they have in recent weeks should give Canterbury a strong challenge at home, but I expect Canterbury to get a close win.

Was really rapt how well Wgtn played... Auck have been pretty erratic this season.

We last won the NPC in 2000 - from 2000 to 2019 Wgtn have made the Final 8 times, but lost them all, which is bloody frustrating stuff... we have always had brilliant backs, but the difference this time is we actually have a very good forward pack, that will give our backs a good platform to attack from, so reckon we have a good chance of beating Cant.

TAB has Canterbury favourites by a long way $1.52 to $2.50. Even though I support Canterbury I believe Wellington should be favourites and at $2.50 its good odds

Second week in a row Auckland just decided to not show up in the 1st half. Not exactly a championship-winning performance so probably a decent reflection in the result.

Perhaps a good note to go out on too given that there's clearly scope for improvement in the on-field leadership and going further with those kind of performances would have papered over that fact.

I'm not usually happy when Auckland lose but when the opposition team is putting together complete rugby and we're nowhere near it, what can you do?

Wgtn have probably been the form team over the last 2 or 3 weeks, Cant. have home advantage though, so looks to be anyone's game in the Final... Wgtn haven't won a Final for 22 years, so would be great if we could get over the line in this one.

Congrats to Wellington who were clearly the more physical and clinical team tonight. I thought it would be hard for Wellington to back up last week's win and for Canterbury to have gone advantage but they did a great job of pressuring Canterbury into making errors and stifled them on attack.

Yeah, was a ripper performance by Wgtn - we did to Cant. in the forwards what Cant. normally do to all the other sides, controlled the set pieces & breakdown area & squeezed the opposition... our urgency was superb, was also very impressed with the huge defensive hits we applied, which helped us turn over a fair bit of their ball.

Great that we did the Shield/Comp double 😎

Reckon the ABs lack openside flankers with the gas to link up with the backs... so would like to see players like Kirifi & Christie in the AB squad.

Did the NPC 2022 feature the no jumping in the air to compete for the ball rule?

Didn't notice that rule in the NPC this season... sounds a farce of a rule anyway.

It really isn't. I have seen it played in lower levels and yellow cards and injuries are less. I expect it to be made part of Super Rugby and Test Rugby eventually.

Every time I see a high ball kicked and two players running toward it and there is going to be an aerial challenge, I am just waiting for someone to get hurt.

Rugby is a physical sport mate, would ruin the game if players had to stop competing for the ball in different areas - what next ? no competing in the air for the oppositions lineout throw, no competing at scrum time, can only tackle below the hips etc... the key to not getting hurt as much is good solid technique, in this case good technique by both players challenging for the ball in the air, also using common sense.

Technique alone will not mitigate the majority of injuries. Whether you like it or not, these changes are coming.

Rugby is a physical game, and you can't mitigate all risk, but over time they will assess the benefit of particular contact against the risks and make decisions to make the game safer and more enjoyable for all.

Solid technique would go a long way though to reducing the injury count... if rugby got to the point of taking a lot of the competitiveness out of it, I wouldn't bothered watching it.

The main reason rugby isn't that enjoyable to watch is because of a ton of pedantic laws, giving refs every opportunity to constantly ping players, so the flow of the game is killed off.
