floydbloke:

It's 'allez les Bleus" from me.

Must confess to some sour grapes in there because of my Dutch bias.

I do regard Messi as one of the best players ever but, whilst not reaching Ronaldo levels, his petulance in the last few days annoyed me and he's a convicted fraudster.  Mbappe is just showing raw talent and getting on with it.  (He is but young though, let's hope it doesn't go to his head.)

Edit:  TAB has France slight favourite to lift the cup at $1.87 vs $1.92 for Argentina.  BET365 has them 50/50.

I'm somewhat conflicted...

I really would like to see Messi get his fairytale ending. He deserves it, in my opinion. But as a former Englishman, I have to (it's my duty to) remember the Falklands.

But then - it's the French...and we're not allowed to like them either.

Still...at least it's not Ze Germans.

On paper France is the stronger team. But ball round, ref blind. Either team has what it takes to defeat the other. Would be funny if the winner comes down to a coin toss (yes it's in the rule book, if everything else is equal).

Pretty sure the coin toss is used to determine which team shoots first in a penalty shoot out.

If its still drawn after that it goes to sudden death and if they match each other goal for goal for ages everyone's brains will have exploded and we wont care what the result is :)

Should be a good final with such good teams - but come on FIFA, your timetable of 4AM is not good for oceania viewers.

I’m sure FIFA have heard of Oceania. Isn’t it next to Macedonia?

Oceania also has 12 official time zones ranging from UTC +7 to UTC +12 so our 4am is Vietnam's 11pm. And it's no surprise that we in New Zealand are inconvenienced the most as our time zone of UTC +12 is one of the least population dense time zones in the world.

It's not the least, that honour goes to UTC +10:30 which is only used by Lord Howe Island with a population of just 385 people. There is an unofficial time zone of UTC +8:45 which is used by 3 small towns along the Eyre highway in Western Australia with a population of less than 150 people but as I said, that is observed but not official.

Please don't ask me why I know this information.

Tbh, it's probably better than 8am on a work day. Can at least watch the whole thing plus possible extra time and penalties either live, or delayed and getting up a bit early before work.

Well...

I am glad I got up at 4am for that!

What a game. What a spectacle. What a tournament. Ignore the politics, the human rights abuses, the location, the timing etc. Drink in the amazing football that was played.

Well done players and coaches and support staff.

FIFA and Qatar certainly got their money's worth.... Its being described by many as one of the greatest finals ever ... It had so many swings, and in the end Argentina and Messi got their fairy-tale ending, despite Mbappe's best efforts to thwart it...

( and He looked totally crestfallen at the end and it looked like he really wanted the world to swallow him up , rather than having to turn up on stage for the Golden Boot and second place medals)

Being a final, that was probably the greatest game of all time. What an epic. Messi always felt destined to win and the contrast between his and Ronaldo's contributions in this tournament couldn't have been more stark.

Feel for Mbappe though. Joins Hurst as a hattrick scorer in a final and one of only a handful to score in 2 finals. Great hit for the 2nd goal.

Looking forward to some sleep now after having managed to watch almost every game. For the last couple of World Cups I remember catching buses/trains at ridiculous times to be able to watch games in town before work. Now that working from home is a thing it's made it a lot easier to manage this time.
