I think Liam Lawson's issues getting a 2024 seat arent on the track but off it. He's shown he's quick. Really quick and he's certainly put his name in everyones mind for a F1 seat.

The problem I suspect he faces is sponsorship. Its a problem pretty much any driver from this part of the world will face. With regards to AlphaTauri (or whatever they become) both Tsunoda and Ricciardo have lots of advertising and/or big company names behind them potentially bringing a lot of money to a team that signs them up. I think the same goes for Logan Sergeant to be honest. Sadly NZ just doesnt have the same clout.

So its possible a 2024 seat is just beyond him. Which might seem ridiculous considering he's shown how quick he is.

However; the opportunity he's had that he has absolutely grabbed with both hands and proven his speed has given an opportunity to get that sponsorship behind him. In his shoes I would be expecting his management team (so maybe RBR) to be getting that sponsorship cash behind him. Because he utterly deserves that. When he gets that his attractiveness to every team grows.

Hmmmm

RBR dont need sponsorship cash as many other teams do, they need point scorers. Tsunoda is linked to Honda so thats pretty much off the table.

Ricciardo and Tsunoda have been confirmed for 2024 ... rats**t!

Lawson "to go back to the reserve role".  If this doesn't fire him up to perform better than Tsunoda today, tomorrow, and possibly at the Qatar weekend, nothing will.

If Williams come calling, I would jump ship and go.  How many opportunities have RBR had to put the kid in an F1 car now, every time he gets passed over.  How much does he honestly owe Red Bull now.  Bloody rats**t!

Problem is that Perez will be out in a while, Danny Ricc may not show what he's shown in the past and he's not young. Lawson could and likely will have a full time main team RBR drive with Max in a couple of years, or three

Can they loan him to Williams but also keep him as Reserve driver? In the unlikely event a Reserve Driver is needed, he drives, and Williams will use their own Reserve Driver

F1TV's Lawrence Barretto suggesting that AT/RBR did not originally intend to name the 2024 Alpha Tauri driver lineup at Suzuka, but were strong-armed into doing so after talks between Red Bull and Honda to secure Tsunoda's year extension.

Disappointing if true but I guess money talks, or I guess continued interest in engine development in 2024 for Honda to benefit RBR.

All weekend F1TV commentators saying they wanted to see Lawson race against Tsunoda. Well now they have and he came home ahead of him! Makes the whole RBR set up look a bit more silly as his results are clearly not a fluke. Boy is fast.

He'll get a F1 seat soon enough. Every other team will be giving him the shoulder tap for 2025 when I understand his current contract wraps up at the end of 2024. Hopefully he's smart enough to hold out on negotiations there.

And boy that Perez and Sargeant seats are looking raw now.
Perez had another shocker, in the same car that's absolutely dominant, he's broken now.

Maybe Marko and Horner can't announce Lawson to replace Perez in the Red Bull until he's freed up from his duties subbing for Ricciardo at Alpha Tauri?

Great drive again from the Kiwi today, especially after it felt like the team did the dirty on him with the undercut during first pitstops.  I watched the last 10-12 laps of the race from Tsunoda's car, can confirm he still has a potty mouth, especially once he realized he wasn't doing enough to pass Lawson.

If daddy didnt own the team Stroll would be too.

The only way I see Sargeant keeping his seat is if Williams cannot get Lawson. Sargeant isnt just fininshing out of the points, he's costing the team by putting it into the wall too regularly. In comparison, Lawson has brought it home in one piece in the 4 events he's had. Admittedly he nearly binned in Zandvoort with a spin... but ultimately didnt.

I saw a few things between the lines. In FP Vowles was asked about Lawson being an option. He talked about Lawson but did not answer that direct question. Horner was asked where Lawson could go on a non deal, he said Williams was the only option, then reiterated that he has a home as reserve for 2024. Makes me feel they are both wait and see, knowing full well that Sargeant is just hanging on. Vowles talking about a lack of parts and budget, then another crash. Lawson loaned to Williams would be a win win for everyone, and the sport.

At worst Lawson will be a full time AT driver in 2025. Danny Ricc wants to drive for Red Bull, that depends if he gets back to his past driving, or not. Not showing that so far. Tsunoda will be out when Honda deal ends (end 2025?)

My hope is that Lawson drives Williams the rest of 2023 and 2024, Danny Ricc fails to flatter, Liam partners Max 2025. He is ideal for Williams and RBR. Fast and clean. Williams could do with fast and clean right about now

Williams could easily pay for Lawsons Salary with the parts Sargent has destroyed. How bad does this guy need to be before they axe him.

The question people are asking is a 1 year deal with Williams going to be enough? RB won't loan him out for longer than a year, in saying that William's don't have any decent F2 drivers in their Junior program (Dan Ticktam and Roy Nissany were that last F2 drivers that are mid pack drivers). They have a couple of F3 drivers that look promising but would need 1-2 years to move through the ranks.

Albon and Lawson drove DTM together they'd make good line up at Williams, Lawson would be more of a match to Albon.

Liam won't want to be sitting on the sidelines for a year - all though he's currently hot property, there is no way of seeing who could appear in the next 12 (or even 2) months. He needs to be on track as much as possible, and now he won't qualify for the rookie FP1 sessions for RedBull and AT.

As for the likelihood of Williams, depends how Williams (and partners/sponsors) feel about the America market.  Even a bad "local" driver in for American GPs (and there is Austin, Las Vegas plus Mexico and Brazil in US friendly timezones still to come for this year) is something they can push and differentiate themselves by. The Brad Pitt movie (whenever it comes out) and the Drive to Survive Netflix series are both massive drawcards and the US is a big target market for F1. All the teams want to attract fans in whatever way they can.

As a long time McLaren fan it was great to see Lando & Oscar on the podium. F1 still has massive issues with RBR being so far ahead of everyone else. I wonder if Max cares that you really only see TV coverage of his car when he pits and when he crosses the finish line?

I have seen a lot of rumours that Lando may join Max at RBR, that would be gutting for McLaren.

Worked for Lewis.

Yes it's great to see McLaren back on some form.  Hoping they can continue that towards the start of a season, as they've traditionally come right well into a year, and been too slow initially to score consistent points and be higher up the constructors championship table.

Hoping also that it's sustainable long term too, as opposed to say Aston Martin who were well ahead initially and now have just drifted off into obscurity.

They reckon Aston made good upgrades then that stopped/slowed, while the others kept pushing on. Red Bull upgrade as well, everyone is or should be. Mclaren has been impressive how they know their car so well now, they are better aligned to improve it. Impressed
