Dr Tom Kavanagh is a lecturer in the sociology of sport at Lincoln University.
OPINION: We should not be surprised by the recent news that LIV Golf will merge with the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour.
I have seen this reasonably frequently, surprised about that. Perhaps its the sensationalism before getting the facts
LIV is not merging with the PGA, PIF is. LIV Golf is history, Greg Norman had his time in the limelight, now he is out again, used by the Saudi's.
It is not about LIV. It is about the PIF and the Saudi's desire to buy profile and respectability. LIV was simply the PIF vehicle for Golf. The name LIV might go but it always was and still will be effectively the PIF tour. You will now see PGA Tour events in global locations, in particular in Saudi, which was the whole point. The PIF in LIV clothing has won. The PGA Tour's resistance has collapsed spectacularly.

As what I said, re the bold. Control of the golf game is the PGA as they have a majority, makes sense, they know golf, PIF doesn't. Obviously money talks so the financial partner will handle the finances, so that they make a profit. To do that golf will need to be united, more money, etc If golf is better PIF and the PGA and the other tours win. So hardly a collapse. They need each other.
In essence there are mostly winners. But Norman has been used, so he is out. I expect the players that stayed with PGA (the other losers) will be compensated as they played just as strong a part in all this as the LIV players. 1. Keep PGA strong 2. Throttle PGA financially 1 + 2 occurred, so here we are
PIF could have just bought the PGA, but sorry Not For Sale. So they played the game and obtained yet another sports business using an alternate method.
I expect to see the odd team event just as PGA do other non normal events (matchplay etc) Perhaps matchplay might slide away in favour of a team event. Yes, it will be more global that's a good thing.
Had PIF funded LIV more and got more decent players and more numbers of players, that would have still seen LIV as weak, and PGA left as also weak, Two Tier one leagues in elite sport doesn't work. How it worked out was probably the better scenario in my view
Perhaps media rights will have to pay more, as in what the market will bear, etc
Congratulations Wyndham Clark on his US Open win. Not someone I would have picked at the start of the week but he played sensational golf and thoroughly deserved the win this morning.
And also congratulations to the USGA for finally giving us a US Open that was enjoyable to watch. Whilst the course had its detractors, at least the set-up was fair. It punished poor golf or poor decisions and rewarded good shot making which is all you can really ask for.
Just watching the end of day 3 of The Open. Brian Harman is amazing. Not long or flashy but he hits most fairways and greens, and his putting is excellent. A perfect Links formula.
Anyone here got a launch monitor or indoor sim?
Planning on getting one of the not so expensive ones, either Garmin R10 or Rapsodo MLM 2 Pro. The former has some really good free sim courses (special no-sub deal with E6 Connect) but the latter offers very accurate spin measurement (with the right kind of golf balls) as it uses combined camera and dopler radar measurement but you have to pay an expensive sub to get a few decent sim courses.
Torn.
If money was no object would get the same GC Quad setup as my coach. Now that is real money.
I have the original Rapsodo MLM. Just picked it up recently 2nd hand for $400 as I just couldn't justify the cost of the Garmin R10 or MLM Pro. I wasn't looking to set up and indoor sim as I don't have the space for one. I just wanted something that could provide basic feedback instantly at the range and to make practice a little more enjoyable. I've only used it one since picking it up but it ticks those boxes from one use.
