I've been an outspoken critic of local women's football and was not really looking forward to seeing the Ferns play, as I have seen them live several times before and their form was dire.

I have to say - they made me eat my words and I am now a card-carrying Football Ferns fan!
They played like a team ranked far higher and they really impressed with their skill, grit, teamwork and general attitude. They never switched off, even when it was clear they were really tired.

The whole WWC has been great, as far as I am concerned. I knew there'd be some good football, but some of it has been truly captivating.

I am looking forward to more!

Disappointments for me have been England, who I predicted would walk their first game and USA, who I expected to look more fluid in their attack - more to come, I guess.

The ticketing situation is a joke though - it's too hard to buy for the average Joe. Lots of abandonment part way through the process. No door sales on the day, which in a wet winter is essential to get bums on seats if it's a nice night and they have spare seats.

Really surprising to see how empty Dunners was in last night's game (Ned vs Por)

Sky is not the Host Broadcaster. They only hold local broadcast rights.
Host Broadcast Services (HBS.tv) is doing it using 4k cameras.

That explains why the coverage is so good :-)

My son and his GF are going to that one.

Not a lot of tickets left for it, so should be a good crowd. Hope the weather holds out for you.

Side note - we went to the game and for the first time ever we all had to put our arms out and were wanded by security.  Plus my medicine bag had to be fully opened and every device and syringe etc looked at.  Not sure if related to the Auckland waterfront incident that day or if this is the new state of play.

I'm volunteering in Wellington and even pre-tournament we were being wanded and bag searched.

Wasnt a bad game, but wasnt a great game either. lots of hollywood esk falling down, becuase it funny they get back up and are running full speed during the next play, no apparent issues from the previous fall.

Really liked the amount of helpful FIFA volunteers around the place and food etc was quick, but man is it overpriced, guess thats what you get if you want stadium food.

Super unimpressed with AT and its train services, getting there was great, going home not so much, cant catch a train to newmarket or south from kingsland so have to go 12mins further to britomart, get there and there is a single 3 car train heading south which is already pretty much full from the previous 6 car train from the stadium, about to hop on and they close the doors, next train is not for 30 mins, WFT AT. 30 minute schedule on the southern line during a special event? 4 other trains from the stadium rock up and there is a enough people to completely fill the next 6 car (thankfully) train to Papakura.

They need to run multiple routes from kingsland, one to Papakura, and one to britomart. saves the 25 minute detour to britomart. even if this isnt possible (pretty sure it would be) then they need to be running 15 minute 6 car trains from britomart for at least an hour and a half after the event to clear people in a timely fashion.

This sort of thing really puts me off going to live events especially with younger kids. didnt get home till about 9:45pm when the game was done by 8pm

Glad you enjoyed the game. FWIW, same thing happens with Wellington trains after an event. Despite the massive surge in people and the capacity for the line(s) to run at least twice as often, they run normal scheduled services. I'm not sure if they even run extra cars than normal.

There might be a 'good' reason for it (they need extra people for 2 hours - what kind of shift is that?) but if you want people to ride the public transport, make it more convenient.

Went to the NZ v Philippines game last night. Weather was dry, crowd was upbeat. Stadium was a sellout with around 32k attendance. There was way more kids there than a normal game and lots of girls among them (no surprise there).

Shame about the result - how do you lose with 70% of the ball and 90% of the shots on goal?

I'm back for the USA - NED game tomorrow which should be some quality footy.

Happens regularly in the Premier League. Soak up the pressure from the better team, hit them on the break and then get everybody back to defend for the rest of the game.

As far as the Ferns are concerned, normal service has been resumed.

So unlucky for that goal to be called offside!
Only mm's in it!

@elpenguino: a real practical question - how was it getting in to/out of the stadium? I’m taking my boys to the Sweden/Italy game on Saturday, and am wondering how early we need to arrive and how long it will take to get home afterwards (we’re planning on using buses). Ta…

This is a really good example of where they should base the offside on the foot position. The other players (there were actually two of them one in front and one behind) were much shorter than #17, so she ends up being offside simply due to her height. You can even see in the image that the defender's hand was even further back

I walked from work and went for a drink in town after the game so I missed the rush. Seeing the crowded train platforms afterwards, my general advice is leave home early to avoid the rush for busses and trains, maybe go to the waterfront fan zone if you have a little time to kill.

Same afterwards, if you can give it even 45 minutes until you go home, the manic rush will be over. Once again, the fan zone is not far away.

I arrived at the stadium area about 45 minutes before kickoff and had plenty of time to wander to the entrance, get a drink and soak up the ambience before the action started. A friend arrived at the stadium area about 15 minutes before kickoff and said he got straight through, also in time for kick off so YMMV.

Other advice would be:

  • have a chat to your youngsters about what to do if you get separated.
  • if you bring a bag you'll go into a much longer queue for bag checks

Hope you get good weather !

Brilliant - thanks for the info! I wasn’t even aware of the fan zone, so good to know about that. Also good advice re avoiding bags if possible.

Yes absolutely, her torso and leg and foot and all behind, just shoulder in front, it is really very debatable. Also she has to go forward to the goal line with the ball, evade the defender, then turn and cross back in to the box by which time other players have caught up any minuscule advantage she might have got.
