This caused some brief controversy. Honestly why would any city want to sponsor the Olympics? It always costs the country money and reputation.

The depiction of the Last Supper was displayed prominently on a large central screen, and had a song performance.

The organisers deny it was depicting the Last Supper painting. The central Christ character was wearing a large halo. The performers on either side of Christ matched the number, poses and garment colors.

The apology was painful to watch. because of the organiser's cheeky grin, cowardice by feigning of ignorance.

On the other side, Fox New Australia should be ashamed with the article titled "'Try it with Islam': Paris Olympics organisers apologise after woke parody of Last Supper and Christianity" and extended coverage of this by a panel of talking heads.

"Sky News journalist Caroline Marcus said while no religion was above scrutiny, the stunt exposed the glaring hypocrisy of so-called progressives, who would never dare to satirise Islam.

Journalist Caroline Marcus has pointed out the hypocrisy of progressives who mock only one religion.

'No religion or ideology should be above mockery or satire ... it is the inconsistency which seems to be applied,' she said on Sunday Showdown.

'Have some courage, try it with Islam, what would happen? You would have a fatwa slapped on your head faster than Ariarne Titmus can swim the 400 metre freestyle.'"

I thought Fox News US was awful, but it has nothing on Fox News Australia.

The Guardian: Paris Olympics organisers apologise to Christians for unintentional Last Supper parody

The organising committee of Paris 2024 has apologised to Catholics and other Christian groups who were outraged by a scene during the opening ceremony that evoked Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper painting with drag queens, a transgender model and a singer made up as the Greek god of wine.

The unintended parody of the biblical scene, performed against the backdrop of the River Seine, was actually intended to interpret Dionysus [god of Wine] and raise awareness “of the absurdity of violence between human beings”, organisers wrote on X.

The committee was forced to apologise after the performance caused outrage among Catholics, Christian groups and conservative politicians around the world.

Who cares about this sort of nonsense? If those people weren’t offended by the Olympics they’d be finding something else to be outraged by.

There are problems with the Olympics but clickbait would be there with or without the games.

Well done to our Black Fern women beating Canada and getting gold. Karma sure is a bitch.

NZ Football has exited the games with a less than impressive showing.

The women's team were hoping for a free pass after Canada were docked points, but NZ were not awarded points for their lost game. The Men's team have been soundly beaten in a strong group, but have looked tactically inept and have not played well since their opening match.

Glad to see the Women's 7's win the Gold - great performance.

Same Gaze coming in 6th in the XCO Mountain Biking was quite an achievement, even though he was very disappointed in the post-race interview. He looked like he might've been on for a medal, but trying to match the pace of Tom Pidcock (eventual gold medallist), as he was surging back up the field ultimately blew him out.

Road race (cycling) - the individual time trial for the women was exciting - and disastrous. Wet roads, painted lines, occasional cobbles = crashes galore. The Kiwi rider sat on top of the podium for quite some time until the top 6 riders barrelled through - she did really well.

The rowers have been a little disappointing - not dominating as they traditionally have. Still some medal hopes though, I believe.

Hockey men have it all to do now - not scoring means not winning. Not winning means not advancing - something needs to change.

Windsurfing chap was ripping into the field this morning on the highlights - took out a massive win. Not sure how the rest of the sailors are going though.

Also watched the surfing  - the Kiwi men's surfer was unlucky to have been drawn against the top surfer on the planet right now - against anyone else, he may have gone through with his scores, but it's a head-to-head elimination, so he's out. Now gets to hang out on a cruise ship in the tropics and watch the remaining heats and finals.
The women's surfer just got unlucky with the waves on offer. It never really happened for her, sadly.

Who are our realistic medal hopes now?

Assume we have some likely Kayak and Track & Field hopefuls?
Anyone from the equestrian team that is in with a shout?

The one of the Brazilian surfer "standing" above the wave is going to live on for a long time I think.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Maybe we should have ultra-left in France and Ultra-right in America sent to Gliese 12 b, earth-like exoplanet 40 light years away.

France24: French rail network vandalism: Investigators probe far-left connections, foreign links

French police are investigating the possible involvement of extreme left groups in last week’s sabotage of the French rail system that paralysed high-speed TGV lines and disrupted travel for about 800,000 people in France.
...
The investigation by France's national jurisdiction for combating organised crime (JUNALCO) is already making progress.

On Sunday, a 28-year-old man was arrested at a site of the SNCF, France's national rail network, in Oissel, northern France. In his vehicle, investigators discovered “access keys to SNCF technical premises”, “wire cutters, a set of universal keys, as well as literature with links to the extreme left”. The man was taken into police custody in Rouen, but no immediate link to Friday's events was established.

An e-mail claiming responsibility for the TGV sabotage was sent to several media outlets on Friday, signed by a group unknown to French security services -- “une délégation inattendue” (“an unexpected delegation”). The text of the e-mail equates the development of the rail network with colonialism: “The railroad is not an insignificant infrastructure. It has always been a means for the colonisation of new territories, a prerequisite for their devastation and a ready-made path for the extension of capitalism and state control.”

The message also denounces the Olympic Games: “They call it a party? We see it as a celebration of nationalism, a gigantic mise-en-scène of the subjugation of populations by states”. The letter concludes by calling for “the downfall of a world based on exploitation and domination”.

Darmanin cautioned on Monday that the letter might be inauthentic: “We have to be careful because it could be an opportunistic claim.”

I was impressed by Canada, and blown away that Canada and the US beat Australia. You'd be getting short odds on Australia not getting a medal at the Olympics in 7's Womens given the form they have been in for the last 6 months particularly. I really felt for them.

They were outplayed, but they were broken after missing out on the Semi. The emotion was gut ripping to watch.

Fair play to Canada who put us under more pressure in the final than I expected them to, they are showing some amazing physicality in defence.

I haven't managed to find this anywhere. Presumably the copyright is locked down good. I'd like to see it. Like most of the Olympics I expect I'll be catching it on YouTube in six or twelve months time ; ).

I'd also guess that the Olympic organizers want to forget about this performance. Lots of single photos if you search for

Paris Olympic "last supper"

Served to a female Jesus, there's a Bacchus character who makes an appearance like a roasted pig under a cloche, a large silver domed platter. He appears to be covered in blue paint, a ring of few small flowers around his waist, and nothing else. Definitely not safe-for-work.

Now that @kingdragonfly has described it, I do remember seeing the scene and thinking what’s the fat Smurf all about. I had the sound off, so if they described what the scene was about, I didn’t hear it. Visually I didn’t connect it with the last supper.

I also didn't at the time.
I thougt the overweight lady with the "halo" was wearing a crown of some sort and was the "Queen of the Queens" or something - I thought it was just supposed to be a gay club and she was the DJ - I thought they were simply doing an homage to the vibrant drag scene in Paris.

In hindsight, it looks very much like the last supper. But only if you are looking for it. Otherwise it's just an odd collection of beings.

I think the more shocking thing about it all is the man in the shorts with his testicle hanging out (or at least that is what everyone is saying it is).

I had the TV muted as well, it didn't look particularly interesting to me and didn't pay it a lot of attention.  I just thought it was all a bit weird.

Anyway...let's talk about sports.

Being a metalhead, I loved the bit with Gojira on the side of the building playing decent music.

Going back to the reasons that I watch the Olympics:

"Obscure" sports, such as Handball and Diving - the Swimming and the Track & Field are all sports I only watch during the Olympics or the Commonwealth Games.
Same can be said for Gymnastics, Kayaking and Rowing.

It's at the busy part of the Games now, where there are constant updates on the various sports that are all overlapping (time-wise), which is the best part, I feel - it's when you get these updates on stuff you didn't even know was happening, like Log Rolling or Cross Country Crawl.
