Being from Europe, Olympics time is pretty much the only way I get to watch "non popular" sports you wouldn't normally see on NZ TV like handball, Judo or fencing.
The Judo competition this year was amazing!
Did anyone see the 100m mens sprint final this morning?
Incredible, how close they are at the finish.
Gold and Silver separated by 0.004 seconds. That's 4/1000ths of a second.
Wasn't the fastest ever, but it was one of the closest, if not THE closest.
Also - didn't realise the Hammer Throw was so hard - in that there is a tiny split in the net that they have to get the hammer through on release. I knew it wasn't easy, but always thought they had about a 45deg window to throw the hammer out of...it's nowhere near!

Heart breaking for 2nd!
How good is it to wake up and see that we have a new Olympic Gold Medallist and three new Silver Medallists (who incidentally broke a world record on the way to that Silver!)?
And to add the two Pole Vaulters who thought their games was over into the finals mix - so good.
Have to feel sorry for the Brits, whose Team Triathlon silver medal has now been downgraded to a bronze after a review of the photo finish. THis was well after the medals had been presented and worn.

kingdragonfly: Boxing Shenanigans.
I simple just got a laugh out of it. You're in a boxing match and somebody punches you in the face too hard and you don't like it? Are they aware of the sport they are competing in?

Truly great to see some more metal in the cabinet when I got up this morning. It's a shame so many events are on while most of us are asleep. I hung on for the speed climbing before hitting blanket bay. My eyes remain unconvinced that those climbers aren't being hauled up by the rope attached to them despite my brain knowing that they are actually doing it without assistance. It just looks unnatural the way they bolt up there.
Yeah, that women's pole vault situation is an interesting one. I found it strange that they just let all the athletes that cleared the lower height through because they needed a minimum of twelve in the final (though great news for Imogen and Olivia). What I found more difficult to understand was the large jumps in height for each round. Twenty centimetres for the first increment but still a fifteen centimetre increase for the next one.
I guess that's the rules, and they were only one short of the required twelve finalists with that second increase, but the uninitiated like myself would have expected smaller increments to vault as they went up. Once the officials didn't get the twelve finalists at 4.55m, why didn't they go down to 4.50m and let the women have another go. Would have possibly sorted out a few than having to take the extra nine who cleared 4.40m.
Despite that, I hope they only use one runway for the final. Conditions should be exactly the same for everyone, or as close as you can get them with the wind, etc.

Often they will share second or third if it is so close.

Yeah not this time.
First place was the second (orpossibly even the third) person over the line as they only measure from the chest breaking the tape and not the feet

It's a pity that the British team is wearing black uniforms this time . It gets confusing seeing where the kiwis are when both are in the same event.

What do we all think of the embarrassing result from the canoeists, who came a distant last in their respective races, due to not even trying to be competitive?
I've seen a lot of commentary on this, both pro and con.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/350369741/nz-mens-c2-500-canoe-sprint-crew-finish-distant-last-twice-2024-paris-olympics
There are those that believe that if they qualified for the Olympics we should all be proud, but others who (IMO rightly) state that there are a lot of potential Olympians who qualify but are denied, due to the strict selection criteria for the NZ Olympic team.
These guys are only embarrassing us in this race discipline due to using a loophole whereby they can be part of the K4 team, only if they compete in something else, as they didn't qualify for the K4 outright.
The qualification for this specific race was through a regatta where these two raced against just two other crews - featuring a competitor aged in his 70s. Other rival paddlers were aged in their 60s and 40s respectively. Imagine if the 70 year old had won - would he have gone to the Olympics? No - he wouldn't. That's not how CRNZ works.
How CRNZ formulated its selection plan, utilising the C2 500 quota spots for two athletes, has come under criticism from within the canoeing community. The added concern is that New Zealand’s C2 paddlers will be embarrassed at the Olympics when competing in an event they have minimal experience at, and are expected to be well off the pace in Paris.
The selection policy has also seen CRNZ turn down its K1 1000 quota earned by Quaid Thompson, who unsuccessfully appealed to the NZ Sports Tribunal over the process.
However, the organisation has defended its selection approach, saying it is operating within International Canoe Federation rules by using the C2 quota spots to form a priority K4 500 crew for Paris, and that the rarely-seen discipline in this country can be viewed as a development opportunity.
CRNZ failed to gain any men’s canoe sprint quota places for the 2024 Paris Olympics at last year’s world championships.
It had been hoping to gain two K2 500 quota spots for the 2024 Paris Olympic starting in late July - which would have enabled it to select four paddlers.
I can't see the athletics team or the triathlon team using tactics like this and potentially embarrassing the NZ team and supporters with this kind of behaviour.
Frankly, I think if they knew they weren't going to be competitive, they should have allowed Quaid Thompson to race, as he qualified fair and square, and the K4 500 crew should have just not been there.
CRNZ comes off very poorly here (almost crooked) and they have really tainted the way many NZers look at the NZ Canoe/Kayak flat water team, now.
The Olymoics is not a development opportunity for anyone - it's the pinnacle of sports and shuld be the best of the best from each competing country - not some dudes giving it a go - otherwise I'd be entering the Mountain Biking and walking half the track.

Its nothing short of a farce. But loop holes will always be exploited by governing bodies when it comes to elite level sports. I just hope the IOC learn from it and make sure this loop hole is closed sooner rather than later.
We won't have long to find out if their ploy worked. The Kayak sprint semi finals and finals are tonight at 10pm and 11:30pm respectively.
