And Im wondering if any airlines still offer cheap commuter flights?


Jetstar is about $200 but you dont get to work until about 1230 Monday and have to leave work about 130pm Friday, would need a flexible boss :-)

I commute Nelson to Welly every week for work.  There are good services which are now reasonably priced.

 

There is 7:00am or 9:30am weekday departure with AirNZ.  Return weekdays is 5:05pm or 6:40pm and there is a later flight as well.  If take the 7:00am I am typically at my desk (CBD) by 8:15am.

 

If you book ahead AirNZ start at $60 each way for seat only .

 

Sounds-Air departs about 7am and is $100 each way.

 

Do not rely upon JetStar.  They have few flights so if one is cancelled you are stuffed for half day or longer. 

 

Parking at Nelson Airport is up to $10 per day.

 

Once in Welly the Airport Flyer is a great bus service with about 10 stops on the main route through the CBD.

There are lots of people who commute from Nelson. Both Soundsair and Air New Zealand have quite a number of people who commute daily and I know somebody who was commuting 2-3 times a week. It's incredibly easy to do if you're located near Nelson airport.

Wow that is extreme, but if you are getting paid a good wage its actually not that expensive. It certainly makes semi retirement in Nelson easier, work half a year contracting etc.

My partner and I rent an apartment in the Cuba area.  Tiny but central and quiet.

 

It's hard to get a tolerable hotel room for under $100/night.  Much nicer and easier to have your own place with your gear, clothes etc and if you want to have weekend in Welly.

 

You can get a habitable but small studio apartment right in the CBD for $200/week.  Separate bedroom apartments start around $300/week.

 

Cheaper if you go further out, but then you may have public transport costs.

 

Renting is competitive.  That said, letting agents see mature professionals as low risk/low maintenance and therefore desirable tenants.

Yeah Id definitely want to be in the city, my days of commuting 3 hours one way in Sydney are over. You cant trust roads and even trains at times

 

I thought my other option would be to buy an IP, when the timing is right and rent out 2 rooms and then just keep it as income when Im done working in 15 years or so.

 

I looked at one in Thorndon, which doesnt have a good ROI of 5% but it does have good CG long term, of course Im taking into account an imminent crash in Auck and its ripple outward, but I dont see this property losing a lot and I wouldnt buy until the market is in buy zone. BUT, Thordon is desirable for some reason. Ive had a look and two very similar shared rentals are going for $200 a room, which being $400 with a modest (normal deposit) makes it bang on neutrally geared. 

 

All pipe dreams right now, but knowing I dont have to work and live in a cramped dingy city centre for another 15 years is quite motivating. 

 

Of course there is always the sideways flight into Welli to consider lol. Ive seen an a380 video coming in sideways there, it seems to be the known trick or technique lol, love the associated tyre burn.

Some of the new developments are doing twin key town-houses and apartments.

 

Twin key means you get a 1 bed studio-apartment and a one bedroom suite-apartment.  There is common mini-lobby and both properties are separately lockable.

 

So you can use it as a 2 bedroom apartment or two separate properties. 

 

The latitude apartments being built on Victoria St offer this.  So did a recent town-house development in Mt Vic and (I think) the Erskine town-house development in Island Bay.

Thats very interesting. I stayed shortly in a property in North Auck where the owner had done the same thing, the upstairs had a locked seperate door for upstairs unit and the other door lock was to the main property downstairs.

 

I would have to look at the ROI but that does sound preferable, Im not a fan of shared, although I lived with a 55yo Eng lady in NSW and we got on very well, so I guess its occupant dependant.
