This should be obvious but I can't see it.  I have a prepaid Skinny SIM in an iPhone 5. Going to Australia for a week next month - and the best deal is a data-only roaming deal for $15. I can totally live without cellular phone and messages for a week - but how do I turn them off? I can easily do wifi only - but I want to have the  option of doing wifi or cellular data - without the risk that someone will inadvertently call me or message me and cost me a fortune?

That won't allow the $15 roaming package to work, as it will be using mobile data not WiFi.

It's a prepaid phone though, thought idea of prepaid is you can't go into credit, so can only be charged a fortune if the money is already on phone?

What happens if you turn on "do not disturb" so it sends all calls to VM immediately? Leave data roaming on. Would that do what you want?

I thought DND mode just silenced the  phone ...  But I may well be over-thinking it - so long as they get to voicemail - I'm assuming I use Skype or similar to call the voice mail number to check messages.

Easiest way to not use voice or text messages is not to answer the phone or make calls, and not send any texts. I think it's as simple as that.

What about the Optus $2 a day deal? Works a treat if you're there only for a few days and don't want the hassle of calls etc coming in on your NZ number.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Wow - that's bloody cheap  we're only there for 5 days / 4 nighs - so that's actually cheaper than the 1 week/500MB deal from Skinny. The only thing I don't like about iphones is that they are not dual sim though - what do you guys do with your NZ sim when you swap?

I put mine in a wallet or gear pouch in my camera bag. Swap it back on the flight home.
