MikeB4:

We are going to the UK next year and I want to go via the US, my wife prefers via Asia.

Do what I did.... go via Tokyo-Anchorage ;)

1) Never without a 2 or 3 day break mid way unless there's an exceptional reason not to do it

2) Generally Singapore (or Bangkok as a second choice) as I find the haul to the Middle East too much in one go (maybe OK in Business but that costs too much)

3) If I was going East, I would probably go through Vancouver rather than the USA by choice

4) I often go to Paris rather than London, have a few days there and then get Eurostar

I should add by way of info that there is a very good new Ibis hotel (part of Accor) at Saigon, just 5 minutes by free shuttle from the International Terminal (the hotel even has a Starbucks in the lobby!) which may make Vietnam a potential stop if interested, although you still need a visa before you can go in which is one of the more pointless and annoying things in modern travel.

I strongly prefer Singapore (have done it with Singapore Airlines, Air NZ and Qantas).

However recently also tried Hong Kong which was OK, and SFO on the way back.

US simply has the disadvantage of having to clear their border and recheck bags, which can be pain if you get caught up in queues.

Rechecking bags isn't really an issue - if you're interlining with another international airline from TBIT then your bags will be tagged right through and you'll simply need to drop them at the baggage transfer carousel.

CBP on the other hand.. If you've already visited the US on the passport and ESTA you're using things aren't too bad. It's those people who haven't visited before that get the big X on the kiosk and then have to queue that have to suffer.
