Hi.

We won a trip to Nelson apparently, next week!

Wondering what we can see and do there? Any recommendations on decent food? Am there Friday through Monday inclusive.

Had a quick look through the Tripadvisor attractions and was a little underwhelmed.

There is a great restaurant out by the Airport in an old Tudor home it has good food and great setting. Also the WOW museum is very good.

A day trip out to Motueka, Kaiteriteri, and even Golden Bay is worth considering.

There certainly used to be some surprisingly good cafes at Mapua

I'm in Nelson.  But I'm too busy to see you.

The restaurant near the airport referred to above is called Monaco Kitchen.  It's really nice.  You need to book.

[Edit: As someone has already posted the tudor place is the honest lawyer.  It's does nice pub food.  Monaco kitchen is better if you like foodie food]

Other goods restaraunts (both in the 'CBD') are Hopgoods (white table cloth) and Urban (casual, like depot in Auckland.  Both do excellent food. You need to book head for Hopgoods - even on Monday nights. Urban you just turn up.  There is a great burger place called burger culture.

Generally the end of Trafalgar St near the church steps is where grown-ups gather to eat and, drink and socialise - cod and lobster do nice cocktails.

De'Villes on New St is a nice lunch time cafe.  Rhythm and Brown on New St is a great grown-ups bar for craft beer and music.

The Saturday morning market is a great place to take your stomach.  Lots of street food.  Also sells lots of craft stuff if you are into that and nice cheese, breads, produce.

Mapua wharf is great for a casual brunch.  Jellyfish restaurant does great food and the little cafe on the corner (forgot name) does amazing donuts.

If you like beer there are heaps of craft beer places and a craft beer trail.  Ditto wine, although the cellar doors can be a bit hit and miss for being open in winter.

An afternoon in a car would allow you to visit plenty of wineries, breweries, arts and crafts places.

If you like the outdoors it's well worth driving out to Kaiteriteri and getting water taxi to the Abel Tasman Track. Or hire a sea kayak.  Or hire some mountain bikes - there are plenty of easily accessible MTB tracks in all grades.  You can walk for miles along the Maitai river if you like a walk.

Heaps of arty, crafty places - especially pottery, paintings and glass.  You can get maps.

Going further afield Golden Bay is well worth a look, although it's a long day to drive over and back at the moment, and the area really warrant its own weekend break.

Hope that helps.

[Edit: BTW World of Wearable arts Musem also has a nice car collection.]

Cheers, Appreciate the time you took!

Hopgoods, Lobster and Cod and TMK look like winners.

Just need to find someone to play squash with now :)

Ooh, could do a tour :)

Yes, and I hear Mapua is now only clothing optional for a month or two each year. I'm just not sure which months....
