Dingbatt: Once Emirates are (virtually) the only A380 operator they will be able to do what they like as far as new gen engines go, as long as they are willing to bear the design, engineering and certification costs involved.

I'd be willing to bet a retro fit re-engine programme done by an arline will never happen. The costs will be prohibitive especially for a passenger aircraft. The only outfit with the expertise to do this is the manufacturer. Airlines don't have the design expertise and I very much doubt there's anyone else with expertise to do such an uograde to the 380.

The 380 will never be used as a freighter due to massive cost it would take to strengthen the floor areas, so it's life will finish when passenger airlines no longer need them. This fact also depresses their second hand value.
