I've been going to Oamaru a few times this year, either from Christchurch or Dunedin - Christchurch airport has the off-site cheap rental places and Dunedin doesn't.  Budget was the cheapest I found at Dunedin airport.

I was joking about a similar thing last night.

I still haven't settled completely on a location to be honest. I am still choosing between LA, Las Vegas, Chicago, and San Fran.

LA is slightly off-putting because everything is so spread out. I love Vegas but for different reasons than most tourists, but I have been there before, and something different is good too. San Fran I have been too before, but has a lot of stuff I like, and Chicago has long been on my list as a foodie, but I am slightly concerned about how cold it might be. If it wasn't for the weather, Chicago would be my first choice.

Even better, stay in Oakland and fly over each day. Only five minutes! Regional flights LA/SF used to land both places on their way and there were always a dozen local commuters who took advantage. Don't know if that still works.

Off the beat on path slightly - Houston? Austin? Charlotte? Nashville? Kansas?

What do you want to do?

Go Rentals are great in Dunedin, right in the terminal (unlike at the other airports) so they're just as quick.

Thanks, Hansens looks really good. We will call them today but looks more reasonable for sure.

When I holiday, my priority is somewhere nice to stay, *great* food, and strangely, I quite like to shop! It's nice if there are sights to see but I prefer things like European Historical Sights over say looking at a bridge. I am not one for Museums (The Lourve I was mostly fairly bored at) but Space Museums would be cool. Florida is our next family trip, theme parks and the like. I love theme parks, but going on my own doesn't really excite me for some reason.

Houston/Texas etc is on my list, but right or wrongly, I see that as BBQ and then slightly out-there type foods that I don't really feel like right this moment.

I am not sure how good the shopping is in Chicago, but I am worried that having 40 layers on won't be conducive to trying clothes on. I love outlet mall shopping, but some places seem to get better deals than others. Vegas wasn't SUPER cheap though we still bought heaps, LA was good, not sure how Chicago measures up.

If I could find someone coming back from the US willing to bring back a few items, I'd actually consider skipping the states and heading to Singapore this trip in some ways.
