I'm looking at renting a car for a long weekend with my family to go south... I have had a look at AVIS, Budget, Triffty, Apex, Eurocar and Affinity. So far I'm quite happy with Eurocar's quick quote but they don't seem to include the GPS add on? And Avis seems like the only one that does it...

Do you have any recommendation of which car rental company be good to suggest?

I'm looking at intermediate 4WD option (like Toyota RAV-4 or that size about), or Family sedan like Toyota Sportivo range. This is for 4 days + and with GPS option if best possible.

Hertz and Avis are my picks...

I thought Hertz had a GPS option too.

If you decide to go with Eurocar, ensure you have a full tank before you leave. We got a 4x4 last week in Queenstown, and it was down to the reserve. When we queried it, they just told us to return it empty. That's a con unless you can manage to return it empty. Otherwise, you're just giving them free fuel.

I used Hertz this year and have used Apex a few times over the last five years. Both were excellent, with Hertz having more modern vehicles but Apex being cheaper.

Renting a car is not usually something that I can afford but I have taken up cheap relocation deals in the past which can be very affordable if you are able to fit it in with your travel plans. Unfortunately this probably won't work for you as relocation requires that you drive north and find some other way to return south.

It might also be worth seeing if your employer has an arrangement with a rental car company.  I was able to use my employers preferred rental car company at their perferential rate and pay the rental car company directly.  It was quite a sizable discount off retail...

I'd recommend Thrifty, I've had a corporate card with them for a couple years now, gives me a great discount plus I never have to fill in paperwork.  Just show my card and I'm away.

Good for those of us in the < 25 age bracket, all the other companies charge an extra fee.
