Honestly, its a lot of effort if you're only going on a single trip. I had a look on gaspy and you'll range between 175 to 193 for cheapest as of now. Within each town you mentioned there is another range itself.

Pay attention on your trip and you'll soon see what the prices are, if you see a good price pull in and fill up.

Nate001:

There are certain towns that have cheaper petrol, and you can plan a trip around it it can help. Try going to Gull (Nth IS) or NPD (Sth IS), otherwise carry an airpoints/flybuys card for Z/Caltex, or smiles card for Mobil.

Personally only use Z sharetank now, I top up whenever I pass through Matamata, or visit family in Nelson, then use it in Auckland. Might not be the best deal, but the beauty of that is you don't need to try play the game or wait for days with deals.

Obvious things to avoid - buying petrol in Wellington/Auckland CBD...

Sharetank makes going on a trip so much easier. No needing to plan where to fill up, just prepay the cheap amount and fill up when required.

And not a rural township. And not BP.

Hmmmm....

BP also has a fairly regular 10c off on Wednesdays, and in PN it's as cheap as or cheaper than Caltex or Z. Mobil seems to offer $1.80 (before Smiles) for a day occasionally.

A rural township with Gull is cheap... especially Taihape, where the Gull is across the road from the BP. And Gull is near completion in Sanson, so the Z price there should drop soon.

Atiamuri, on SH1 several kms south of Tokoroa, has the cheapest Gull, maybe cheapest petrol, in the North Island, I reckon.

Rotorua for some reason always seems to be cheap.

Can anyone tell me what the current average price without discounts of 91 is in Dannevirke and Palmerston North or give some specific examples? I realise there are differences between stations. I will have to fill up at one place or the other. Also Levin. How close to the Kapiti Coast can I get before I start hitting outrageous prices?

PN prices are around $1.93 for 91... BP or Mobil on Rangitikei St, Mobil on Ruahine St. There's also a Waitomo on Tremaine Ave that's a bit cheaper (before discounts). Levin has a Gull that is always cheap. I'd fill up there rather than trying to find a lowish price further south.

And that's what I mean by national propping up. In canterbury, They are stiffing everyone pretty much. 5-9c higher sign/pump price, Than Z/Caltex/Mobil. And their (BP) 6c discounted price, brings it to the same sign/normal price of the others.

They'll do 10c days. But it's still no better off/shy ~2c over the others with a 6c applied as a result.

Ummmm... your BP 91 prices are *lower* than PN (around 193). And Z is much lower. So we're subsidizing you apparently.

Yup :) More like that out of town. But that's the model they've moved to. Whereas once upon a time, it was fairly flat everywhere. While less in AKl, less nearer refinery. And more out of main centres.

There's a massive range across wellington greater region too I understand. Where Sharetank comes into it's own.

Whole scheme is a bit of a fallicy. Given the smaller discounters they're 'competing' against, are supplied by the main ones!

And if you don't want to play the rewards gamble and can handle a monthly bill, theres always a fuelcard.

Which you can win some, but you can also lose some. Goldies tend to get 12c off Z from memory. While others may be off the 'national' (average) price, so may not be cheaper than the current pump depending on where.

There are a growing number of BP customers spending hours of their own time managing their fuel use and driving to petrol stations to do double fills (getting harder now prices have dropped) or often a fill up in the morning and night to maximise their Smartfuel savings over the 2 month period - if you can accumulate up to 16 x 10c over the two month period and cash in on a 10c day you can basically get a tank for free.

We know this is a false economy but when they have a customer base that laps this up there is no need to actually be competitive.

In Lower Hutt Pak n Save have a BP and Z directly opposite and run a permanent price around 8-12c cheaper for 91 and 10-15c cheaper for 95 (and all 3 offer a 6c discount which doesn't change this) in recent weeks. Typically every Wed and Thu Pak n Save run an additional 10c off the pump price (and still offer their instant 6c voucher discount on top). It's amazed me in recent weeks where petrol has still been 12c - 15c cheaper at Pak n Save than BP or Z on their 10c discount days that people will still visit Z or BP.

That reminds me, PakNSave have announced they're dropping sticky discounts (cumulative discount based on spend in month period) as of today.

Everyone is going to be eligible for bulk discount (10c) instead with $1+ spend. It's smartfuel while noone else had them all over again.

Or perhaps that is bringing the South in line with what you are describing above

Ah I forgot Taihape and I used it this week. It's quite convenient. And I saw the Sanson one this week too!

In the North Island fuel discounts are just the standard 6cpl voucher - but many Foodstuffs own fuel sites also already price well below their competitors like my example above.

So what is the average price if you get this discount? For 91?

As in pump price? Only accept PnS vouchers (not fuelup). And supplied by Z but unmanned. So varies 2-10c less than nearby competition posted normally

(And till now with shopping you got 6/10/12/15/17/20/25/30 off)

But if you are like Rangiora here, where there is also a BP, NPD within 60m of each other (or a nearby direct comp discounted). The start point is a little lower - Showing as $1.83 2 days ago.

One in Central CHC is normally same as Zs flybuys/AP price. But currently 1.74 pre-discount - poss due to the numerous new unmanned competition in the CBD

Wainoni also showing 1.74 due to the Allied across the road.
