To add though:

Customs Minister Meka Whaitiri said the New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) has been a vital tool in supporting the safe re-opening of our borders.

“The NZTD is an integral part of modernising Aotearoa’s border experience and the New Zealand Customs Service is working with border agencies to replace the paper arrival card with the online NZTD system by June 2023,” Meka Whaitiri said.

So it does appear that the plan is to take the work put into it and expand it into a general purpose digital incoming passenger card replacement over the next six months, which is probably the best outcome (so long as paper cards or assistance remain for those who cannot easily use technology, of course). It would still be nice if it had some way of saving responses that don't change (like your name and date of birth...)

It'll be interesting to see if they'll be able to accommodate last minute changes for MPI declarations.

E.g. you've stated in your pre-filled declaration that you've got no food because that was the intention but as it turned out the kids weren't hungry during the flight and you've still got a few biccies and a bag of chippies in your bag when you land.

Not sure if you have flown recently but they have an option on the SmartGate screen to declare if you have visited Indonesia recently (same as in Australia). Presumably they could just add an option for choices with the potential to change, e.g. duty free, food.

You are not supposed to bring any food served on the plane into the country.

Off topic but you can bring in declared food - you just need to declare it and have it inspected. The issue is people don't seem to class stuff they've acquired in flight as food... the risk is mostly around fruit picked up in transit rather than a sealed packet of crisps. Hence the excitable and cute beagles.

Being tea addicted, I often bring tea in. Sealed packets of black tea are fine if declared - unless they involve citrus peel (e.g. lady grey) or honey (just don't even think about it). They go in the sacrificial bag along with walking boots, trainers, tent etc that I know I will have to show them. Never yet had a problem.

I have always found biosecurity guys to be somewhere between neutral to really helpful and if you are honest with them they are quite happy. If you muck them around expect to empty all of your bags completely and good luck with the next flight!

Wow news to me and I've flown 50+ if not 100+ flights on Air NZ. I assume it's an audio-only announcement done over the PA system? I'm Deaf so really the only info I get in-flight is from the subtitled safety briefing.

You might be right there. Certainly the inflight announcement is pretty clear about it. Usually about 2-3hrs prior to touchdown long haul. I thought the old forms had a warning about it too, but I can’t remember clearly. There was a time when there were little paper slips given out with the rules on but I think they disappeared during an AirNZ greenwash cycle!

I haven’t flown long haul for three years though so not sure about current (well I was due to go to a meeting in Florida last month but hurricane Ian arrived first).
