I didn't think they were allowed to charge any more as "fees" other than what the fee actually represents? Essentially, they aren't meant to profit from card fees?

...

Try telling that to the airline industry!

How else can you pay that avoids the fee? If there isn't one, then IMO it needs to be as prominent as the hourly and other rates.

I think that, because it’s clearly shown on the Rates notice at the entrance, they’re covered - as much as we hate them and the charge.

I don't consider it clearly shown. It's in small font, a different colour with reduced contrast, separated from the rates and below the heading "Hours of operation". If they were being upfront about costs, it would be built into the costs or at the very least displayed as prominently as the rest of the fees.

It’s in a red panel - which often signifies a warning - and the font is larger than some of the other details on that sign. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not defending them - but I bet that legally they’re covered on this. What we all think of them and their practices is irrelevant.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

for wellington street parking we have the same crap.  They get around it but having "some" machines which take cash.   At much less locations that every other machines.  So you can avoid the surchage and pay by cash, but you have to hunt out a cash accepting machine.  Shitty process going to shitty.

Can you pay cash at this machine?

If they only accept electronic transactions then the fee must be included in the price and not a separate fee.

It is one reason why I don't bother shopping in Wellington CBD now, and neither do a lot of people based on how much retail is dying.

IANAL but my understanding is everything must be clearly and accurately described under the Fair trading act as per. https://comcom.govt.nz/business/your-obligations-as-a-business

If people have concerns they should report to the Commerce Commission. I don't know if the Commerce Commission is proactive, or if they rely on people reporting issues. However their website says they don't investigate everything that is reported but the more people that report something, the more likely they will.

At least Pay by Plate allows you to buy a block of time and move within the same meter tariff zone rather than losing any leftover time as soon as you moved off the mushroom.
