sir1963: Trump is a darn good reason why judges should not be political appointments.

These should be legal appointments based on merit and merit only.

Off subject, but another bizarre aspect of the US is sheriffs are elected, not appointed.

It varies by county, which is also weird.

The only absolute requirement is you're a US citizen. There may not be any education or physical requirement. There may not even be an age requirement. You may not even have to live in the county.

Being am old white racist male blowhard is definitely an advantage for getting elected as Sheriff. Local county elections have notoriously bad turn-outs, and it's not unusual to have no opposition candidate.

Its not even a requirement to have a law degree to be a judge in some courts

Im not a Trump fan, especially on reversing the paris climate change agreement.

But he was bloody well right on Huawei. China has been "taking" intellectual property for too long which is what is propping up their economy. Problem is most consumers are ignorant of what has happened. Listen to Mellisa Chen on Joe Rogan podcast. She breaks it down.

Also google did the right thing by Huawei.

In some ways its the new japan, remember when japan use to copy car manufacturing, guitars etc etc.

But in this day and age its an economic cold war.

Completely irrelevant. Many years ago companies complained about Huawei taking their intellectual property (e.g. Cisco case from 2003). This is a case for the courts, and perhaps the WTO. But you fail to mention the case the US and others are trying to make is not commercial, but espionage - and not industrial espionage either.

I wouldnt say irrelevant, possibly seperate to Trump, but Trump doesnt like it.

Things like one of the the NBA owners tweeting he supports the Hong Kong issue, then China pulls all sponsorship, tv money, etc

So he had to semi go back on his statement as its essentially shutting down the NBA commercially.

What Chen said is what is relevant to me, the US should do the same thing to China, which is why she supports Trump on that one issue, which the US should.

This cold war issue, intellectual espionage, etc, the US just needs to start reversing the playbook on them imo.

Google were working on a limited search engine simply because they know China will just steal their tech anyway.

Its not a small issue and is relevant to Trump as he is the President of the US and ultimately responsible for these issues.

On the plus side, NZ has moved from a US focused economy to being a China focused economy, so Australia clearly does well with China growth, as does NZ.

And Julian Assange lawyers claim in court that Donald sent a congressman to offer a pardon in exchange of Assange publicly saying Russia was not involved in the Democratic Party leaks.

How could the founding fathers have thought it was a good idea for the President to be able to pardon anyone? It's just crazy no matter who the President is.

It's a matter for the judicial system.

I wonder if this will change if the Democrats ever get power back, considering Trump all but admitted this pardoning was done because these convictions were done while his political enemies were in charge.

How could the founding fathers have thought that it was a good idea for a majority of one to decide the law of the land? It is just crazy no matter who the justice is.

The founding fathers were terrified of a powerful President, given their experience with a King.

But they were paranoid about the unwashed masses creating agrarian laws. After all they were all white men with property, including many slave owners.

So they created the Senate and the Electoral college for voting, for some protection from the common folk.

The pardon power of the President applies only to convictions under federal law.

Which is why New York can convict Trump of state law offenses, without a chance of a pardon from anyone such as shudder President Pence.

MEXICO TIGHTENS BORDER AFTER TRUMP PARDONS WHITE-COLLAR CRIMINALS

MEXICO CITY (The Borowitz Report)—The government of Mexico announced that it was tightening its border with the United States “effective immediately” after Donald Trump pardoned a host of white-collar criminals on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters, the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said that Mexican border agents were on alert to prevent any recipients of Trump’s pardons from crossing into their country.

“They’ll bring bribery, they’ll bring tax evasion, they’ll bring racketeering,” Obrador said. “I wish I could say that some of them are good people, but that would not be truthful.”

Obrador said that border agents had been given “special instructions” to block the entry of Rod Blagojevich, the former governor of Illinois, whom he called “El Blago.”

“If El Blago enters our country, he will head straight to Mexico City and start selling Senate seats,” Obrador said. “He is a dangerous man.”

Concluding his remarks, Obrador said that he had contacted Trump directly to warn him against sending the criminals to Mexico. “I told him to find places for them in his Cabinet,” he said.

'Ask not what you can do for your country: ask what you can do for me'. Donald J.Trump. US President 2016 - 2020.
