Trumpy's recommending that people should wear masks. He won't be practicing what he preaches however, as he doesn't like to lead by example.

It'll be funny to see his orange leather preserver smeared all over a blue medical mask.

The Daily Beast: Trump Says Wearing Masks to Combat Coronavirus Is a ‘Voluntary’ Health Measure and He Won’t Wear One

Some in the administration feared that an announcement recommending that all Americans wear masks would open them up to accusations that they got it wrong at the onset.

Daily Beast: by Erin Banco and Olivia Messer

President Donald Trump’s coronavirus task force on Friday announced new CDC guidelines urging Americans to wear masks or other protective facial cloth to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, but the president himself repeatedly stressed that the measure is “voluntary” and noted that he wouldn’t be wearing one.

“You can do it, you don't have to do it,” Trump said of the “voluntary public health measure” in a briefing Friday. “I'm choosing not to do it, but some people may want to do it and that's OK. It may be good. Probably will.”

The decision to announce the new recommendation, first reported by Stat News, had been delayed, in part, by fears inside the White House over the optics of issuing new guidelines that directly contradicted those previously pushed out by the federal government, those same sources said.

America is a divided country, led by a man who can't stand being compared to a successful black president.

We will not see diseases like the coronavirus come here ... and isn't it refreshing when contrasting it with the awful presidency of President Obama."

The New York Times - Trump Proceeds With Post-Impeachment Purge Amid Pandemic

today

The president’s under-cover-of-darkness decision late the night before to fire Michael K. Atkinson, the intelligence community’s inspector general who insisted last year on forwarding a whistle-blower complaint to Congress, swept away one more official deemed insufficiently loyal as part of a larger purge that has already rid the administration of many key figures in the impeachment drama.

Mr. Trump made no effort at a news briefing on Saturday to pretend that the dismissal was anything other than retribution for Mr. Atkinson’s action under a law requiring such complaints be disclosed to lawmakers.

“I thought he did a terrible job, absolutely terrible,” Mr. Trump said. “He took a fake report and he brought it to Congress.” Capping a long, angry denunciation of the impeachment, he added, “The man is a disgrace to I.G.s. He’s a total disgrace.” ...

While appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate, inspectors general are government watchdogs, traditionally granted a great deal of independence so that they can ferret out waste, fraud and other misconduct in government agencies without fear of reprisal. ...

FAUCI SENDS NON-ESSENTIAL WORKER HOME

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Dr. Anthony Fauci ordered a non-essential employee of the White House Coronavirus Task Force to go home immediately, Fauci confirmed on Friday.

Speaking to reporters, the esteemed virologist said that he made the decision to expel the worker for “the health and safety of others.”

“The man insisted that he was perfectly able to come to work every day,” Fauci said, “but I told him, ‘You may feel okay, but by coming into work you are endangering the lives of countless others.’ ”

Fauci explained that his decision to send the non-essential worker home was based on the most recent scientific findings.

“What we’re learning is that breathing and talking can put lives in jeopardy, and this worker did more breathing and talking than anyone else on the team,” he said.

The Washington Post - Trump’s career is built on finding shortcuts. Against the virus, there are none.

03 April 2020

For many painful weeks, President Trump treated the coronavirus as he had so many adversaries through more than half a century in the public spotlight: He denied reality, he danced around the facts, he attacked with bluster, and above all, he tried to work his marketing magic: Everything will be okay, the virus will go away, America can get back to business, I am doing a great job.

It was standard-issue Trump, a message delivered with his lifelong confidence that he would get the result he wanted by spurning the experts, breaking the rules and declaring his own success. ...

The president’s inability to bend the coronavirus to his will finally forced a course correction on Tuesday. ...

By telling Americans to stay home and by accepting scientists’ dire projections about how many will die, Trump bowed to reality.

The man who rose to the most powerful position in the world by ignoring rules and subverting norms seemed at last to have conceded that there can be no end run around this pathogen. ...

[Trump] is now, he says, “a wartime president.” It might take a little longer, but he can see victory not so far away. He guarantees it.

Hey Mr. POTUS, that's the way we do ...

... instead of hijacking other's medical equipment and masks!

+++ The aircraft manufacturer Airbus has again brought protective masks from China to Europe. A machine with medical equipment on board landed in Hamburg. Some of the approximately four million protective masks remain in Germany. According to Airbus, the rest will be brought to Toulouse and distributed in France, Spain and Great Britain. +++

Huffington Post - U.S. Withholding N95 Masks, Turning Away Canadians On Cruises Sparks Outrage On Social Media

The tweets come amidst news that U.S. President Donald Trump pressured N95 respirator manufacturer 3M to stop exporting the masks to Canada.

I don't subscribe to conspiracy theories but this is one that's not too far-fetched:

"What if we were to learn that Trump suppressed scary information re COVID-19 (and the needed federal response) in January to postpone the economic turndown until it could no longer endanger his Senate acquittal? Retweet if you wouldn’t be surprised by his making that tradeoff."

The New York Times - This Is What Happens When a Narcissist Runs a Crisis

Trump’s catastrophic performance has as much to do with psychology as ideology.

today

Let’s start with the basics.  [extracts only]

  • First: Narcissistic personalities like Trump harbor skyscraping delusions about their own capabilities. They exaggerate their accomplishments, focus obsessively on projecting power, and wish desperately to win.

  • Second: The grandiosity of narcissist personalities belies an extreme fragility, their egos as delicate as foam. They live in terror of being upstaged. They’re too thin skinned to be told they’re wrong.

  • Third: Narcissistic personalities love nothing more than engineering conflict and sowing division. It destabilizes everyone, keeps them in control.

  • Fourth: Narcissistic personalities are vindictive.

  • Fifth: And most relevant, as far as history is concerned: Narcissistic personalities are weak.

What that means, during this pandemic: Trump is genuinely afraid to lead. He can’t bring himself to make robust use of the Defense Production Act, because the buck would stop with him. ...

An excellent in-depth article - read it in full if you can.  😶
