I was thinking that the US is a kakistocracy, but hey - there's clear "proof" of a stable genius:

These people are cultists. Rational discourse is wasted on them. The best that can be hoped for is to contain them to prevent the infection from spreading even further.

I think Trump’s appeal is rooted in the dissatisfaction people feel with the political system, especially in the US. Trump has managed to present himself as a disruptive outsider who is bringing down the Establishment, and those who feel the system has let them down respond to that.

Those lining up in front of government buildings with their ridiculous camouflage outfits and their penis-compensating military weapons are also those who have been most failed by a system that ignores their legitimate needs. They may look like cartoon caricatures, but their anger is very real.

I honestly don’t think there is an answer to this. I think it has already gone too far. There is at least a reasonable possibility that Trump will be removed one way or the other in the not too-distant future, and a more competent and nuanced administration will take over. But the anger of the Trumpists will not go away. They will simply crawl back under their rocks. Unless there is such a massive upheaval of business as usual in the United States that people like this can be given a genuine stake in the future of the country, any prospect for genuine healing is doomed.

I see Dr Birx has joined the Trump alternative truth team at todays press conference.

Apparently the US mortality rate is the lowest of anywhere in the world. Which proves beyond doubt that she is actually on a different planet to the rest of us.

CNN - 11 words from John Oliver that expose Fox News' fundamental hypocrisy

John Oliver dedicated his entire 21-minute show on Sunday night to a deep dive into false information being peddled by Fox News and other conservative media outlets about the coronavirus, and the impacts those falsehoods are having on President Donald Trump and his decision-making.

There's a good article in The Atlantic (standard disclaimer, good literary journal but annoying anti-Trump bias), We Are Living in a Failed State: The coronavirus didn’t break America. It revealed what was already broken. This leads to crazy things like the politicisation of the pandemic, with "freeing us from life^H^H^H^Hlockdown" being made a political fight rather than a medical decision.

I was already depressed by the idiocy and sheer ignorance of half the American population but these last few posts have sent me into a very deep pit.

If I believed in god I would say, God save America. I'm afraid nothing can save America, now.

Just glad it is nearly drinkies time!!

Does anyone have a link to an alternative source for the "Coronavirus V" broadcast? The CNN one is 404 but there are huge numbers of views for it so maybe it's US-only.

Don't think so. Works fine for me. Try this: https://edition.cnn.com/2020/04/21/politics/john-oliver-fox-news-coronavirus/index.html

Sorry, my mistake.  You do need US VPN. Then it works.

So does the linked video in that story play for you? I just get "This video is not available".

You need a VPN or DNS proxy. Some VPNs offer a limited free service. I am using Windscribe. I will see what I can do.

Ah, OK, thanks for the info. They usually make them available internationally after a slight delay so I expect it'll turn up eventually, and the CNN summary presumably covers most of what was said.

You might try downloading it with y2mate. I just did and it worked fine, but I don't know if that bypasses the geoblock. In any case, I have it as a MP4. There are a lot of ways to see this.
