Pew Research Center - Amid Campaign Turmoil, Biden Holds Wide Leads on Coronavirus, Unifying the Country

October 9, 2020

The new survey by Pew Research Center, conducted Sept. 30 - Oct. 5 among 11,929 U.S. adults, including 10,543 registered voters, finds that Biden maintains an overall lead in voter preferences: 52% of registered voters say if the election were held today, they would vote for Biden or lean toward voting for him, while 42% support or lean toward voting for Trump.

The Washington Post - Opinion - Trump’s campaign is in a death spiral

today

The latest in a string of very bad polls for President Trump comes from the Pew Research Center, a massive survey (nearly 12,000 respondents) that shows Joe Biden leading by 10 points. [see above]

Which is right where poll averages have the race as well. ...

Trump's answer to his current political predicament is to do exactly what he’s been doing, only more.

It seems clear that as Election Day approaches, he’ll be caught in an insane cycle in which he thinks the way to pull victory from the jaws of defeat is to double down on everything that’s driving voters away from him. ...

So Trump is spending his time calling in to Fox programs, rage-tweeting madly, berating members of his own cabinet, and trying to convince people that Hillary Clinton framed him for the Russia scandal in 2016.

He’ll be holding a “virtual rally” on Rush Limbaugh’s radio program Friday, then that evening he will go on Tucker Carlson’s show to get an on-air “medical evaluation” from a Fox News “doctor” best known for spreading misinformation on the pandemic. ...

Whoever is advising him must be wanting him to lose.  The 1 advantage he still has over Biden - the economy and he throws it away, publicly, by not doing a worker stimulus deal, in the final 3 weeks of an election

A 2016 Trump, with Pelosi offering a 2.2T deal would have said make it 3T and put my name on the checks, and would have used the power of the presidency to push the Republicans to do it.

its to the Democrats advantage if nothing goes ahead - a lot of people just got 1 $1200 check, the other 97% of the stimulus went to businesses, and political lobby groups and political projects funds.  50M Americans about to struggling to pay rent went rent moratoriums come off

You'd think the Republicans would want to stop an electoral blood bath, but McConnell knows that a lot of Republicans think that the pathetic amount of stimulus already is enough, let alone anymore, especially the 1.8T the President is talking about, McConnell is not going to stoke Republican disloyalty by bringing up a bill that will not pass.

I think it's not his advisors. From my observation he's acting irrational because of his medication/illness. Ever seen your grandfather try to plan stuff when having a virus, on medication and in hospital.

I think the major issue is his narcissism. Losing, being wrong, is exactly what a narcissist doesn't want. Cannot fix that so its rant ville from here on. He will argue and disagree on everything that is against him, he's already losing it. Irrational.

If the polls were close, he would be in his element, despite being not well, thats my opinion. In any case, he is history, as has been the case for a while now, there are Republicans who want him out, polls want him out. I read an article today that US survey showed that the majority of Americans feel they are better off now. That always aligns with Presidential support, or lack of it. This means that they feel they are better off but still want him out. The next 3 weeks will be full of irrational venting, then he's gone. Well, Im not sure what in the Constitution allows anyone to ignore the vote.

I think it goes further than that. This is someone who has had everything his own way all of his life. He surrounds himself with yes-men. As the boss of his business he was used to yelling orders and having people jump to do what he says. I think he genuinely believes he is superior to everyone else, and that he can bend every circumstance to his will. He simply can't conceive that he can lose, so all he has to do is just keep doing what he is doing, only more of it. I think he genuinely believes, down deep where it counts, that he can make this virus do what he wants it to. That is way beyond simple narcissism.

The cartoon of the house on fire does make me think.

Maybe in future they will name this "The age of Absolutism"
Perhaps there is a better word for it.
There is a lack of willingness to compromise for a greater sum of other good that make up life and a community.
Americans seem to have been particularly captured by single issues, damm the rest.
It works very well for a Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, you are the product being sold .

The techniques at Cambridge Analytica have not gone away.
More refined and amplified, no matter if its ISIS or Authoritarians looking to bolster their power.

A New Zealand researcher has helped expose how data is being harvested and used by churches in the US to microtarget and attract vulnerable people into right-wing politics.

The cartoon of burning house says it.

They can't leave the burning house, much less accept the help of the fireman.
The fireman is not whatever their over-riding issue they have been microtargeted on.
Even if he can put out the fire, rescue them and save their lives.
All the other 99% of things that make up a life fade into insignificance, so they will give up all the rest.
Polarized to a simple 'Binary' decision.
Freed from uncertainty and pain of compromise, then finally life itself.

Agreed - all of the above.

Trump has always been a textbook Narcissist.

One psychiatrist who specialises in personality disorders recently described Trump as the worst case of Narcissistic personality disorder that he had ever seen.

Trump has always perceived himself to be fabulously wealthy, successful, and "perfect".

As already stated, nobody says "no" to Trump. The ultimate "spoiled little rich kid." Totally amoral.

Since becoming President, his personality disorder has got worse.

His "mystery illness" in 2019 was not a series of mini-strokes, Trump has declared.

COVID has made things much worse - Trump is now frail, old, and quite literally, a Narcissist on steroids.

Malignant Narcissists are most dangerous when faced with public humiliation, and that is exactly where we are now. ...  😶

Psychology Today - Malignant Narcissism: Does the President Really Have It?

Posted Mar 12, 2019

The Egyptian Pharaohs, the Roman Caesars, the Borgias, Hitler, Stalin, Trujillo - they all show certain similar features.

They have attained absolute power; their word is the ultimate judgment of everything, including life and death; there seems to be no limit to their capacity to do what they want. ...

They try to pretend that there is no limit to their lust and to their power, so they sleep with countless women, they kill numberless men, they build castles everywhere, they ‘want the moon,’ they ‘want the impossible.'

"Chris Christie still battles coronavirus as other senior Republicans try to carry on"

Seven nights in the hospital already... Not looking good, is it?

Also, Giuliani:

After last week's presidential debate in Cleveland, for instance, Giuliani flew home to New York City. Less than five days after Trump's positive test, Giuliani attended a rooftop fundraiser for the Manhattan Republican Party.

Age 76 and a cancer survivor, Giuliani is worried about having been in close proximity to Trump during his recent debate prep, as well as to advisers Hope Hicks and Christie. Christie, who is overweight and asthmatic, spent his fifth night in the hospital Thursday following his diagnosis.

"I was in a room with 6 or 7 people, including Chris and Hope, and Chris and I were right next to each other," Giuliani told CNN. "So I guess I'm just lucky."
