New York Times: Supreme Court justice Kavanaugh’s opinion in Wisconsin voting case raises alarms among democrats

The Supreme Court justice’s suggestion that ballots arriving after Election Day could “flip the results” left voting rights activists concerned about how the court might rule in postelection fights.

The Supreme Court decision on Monday barring the counting of mail-in ballots in Wisconsin that arrive after Election Day was not a surprise for many Democrats, who had pressed for it but expected to lose.

But a concurring opinion by Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh set off alarms among civil rights and Democratic Party lawyers, who viewed it as giving public support to President Trump’s arguments that any results counted after Nov. 3 could be riddled with fraudulent votes — an assertion unsupported by the history of elections in the United States.

The decision also unnerved Democrats and local election officials in Pennsylvania, where Republicans are asking the Supreme Court to weigh in again on whether the state can accept ballots received up to three days after Election Day. While Democrats in Wisconsin had been appealing for an extension, the current rules in Pennsylvania allow for ballots to arrive three days after the election. Any change could threaten the more than 1.4 million absentee ballots not yet returned.

In his opinion, attached to the 5-to-3 ruling against the deadline extension in Wisconsin, Justice Kavanaugh wrote that Election Day mail-in deadlines were devised “to avoid the chaos and suspicions of impropriety that can ensue if thousands of absentee ballots flow in after Election Day and potentially flip the results of an election.”

He added, “Those states also want to be able to definitively announce the results of the election on election night, or as soon as possible thereafter.”

Justice Kavanaugh’s statement mirrored in some ways Mr. Trump’s efforts to suggest that only ballots counted by Election Day should decide the result, and more generally to push unfounded claims about widespread voter fraud.

Earlier on Monday, the president had posted on Twitter that election officials “must have final total on November 3rd,” alleging without evidence that there are “big problems” with mail-in ballots. Twitter labeled the tweet “misleading.”

The Wisconsin ruling was the latest in a series of court decisions setting the rules for how voters in different states can cast their ballots during the coronavirus pandemic and when the cutoff is for receiving them.

"Trump’s campaign website hacked by cryptocurrency scammers"

President Trump’s campaign website was briefly and partially hacked Tuesday afternoon as unknown adversaries took over parts of the page, replacing them with what appeared to be a scam to collect cryptocurrency. There is no indication, despite the hackers’ claims, that “full access to trump and relatives” was achieved or “most internal and secret conversations strictly classified information” were exposed.

The hack, first noted by Gabriel Lorenzo Greschler on Twitter, seemingly took place shortly before 4 PM Pacific time. The culprits likely gained access to the donaldjtrump.com web server backend and inserted a long stretch of obfuscated JavaScript producing a parody of the FBI “this site has been seized” message, which appeared over the normal content.

“the world has had enough of the fake-news spreaded daily by president donald j trump,” the new site read. “it is time to allow the world to know truth.”

Has anyone else wondered at a sitting president being able to use huge state resources for their own campaigning? Jazzing around in a huge plane for one.

USA TODAY - Donald Trump slammed Obama for using Air Force One for election campaigning. Now he does the same.

29 May 2019

Trump's campaign reimburses the government for a portion of the travel but in a mystery that has frustrated watchdog groups for decades, there is secrecy around how the White House accounts for Air Force One and other travel expenses. ...

"It's up to the White House to determine if the trip has a political purpose," said Brendan Doherty, a political scientist at the U.S. Naval Academy and an expert on presidential travel and fundraising. "We usually don't get a full picture of what that cost is."  ...

Trump criticized Obama for the practice in 2016.

"Taxpayers are paying a fortune for the use of Air Force One on the campaign trail by President Obama and Crooked Hillary," Trump tweeted. "A total disgrace!"

Thanks for the info, Sideface. No surprise about the shadowy accounting and the normal hypocrisy, though!

Just saw an interview with Michael Wolff on Sky News who has written 2 books on Chump from within the White House and he reckons we should be talking about not a Biden win but how big the landslide is going to be.

Lets hope he's right.

Also, when asked if Chump would go quietly, he said that his attention span is so short he would almost be gone the day after the election and onto whatever he chose to do next.

It's not going to end on 4 November our time. If we have a clear winner by year end, I'll be amazed.

Even though Ivanka will probably beg Trump to give up, that she tired of the White House, Trump will take it before every court, every level, that he can.

After all he's been involved in 3,500 lawsuits:

"Of the 3,500 suits, Trump or one of his companies were plaintiffs in 1,900; defendants in 1,450; and bankruptcy, third party, or other in 150. Trump was named in at least 169 suits in federal court."

"Good sportsmanship" and "losing gracefully" are unimaginable for Trump.

Shamelessly and publicly cheating, even as something as trivial as a fun golf game, is par for the course.

Real Clear Politics has 2016 vs 2020 poll comparison.

7 days out from the election, Clinton's poll advantage had collapsed to 1.9% and still heading down, Biden's polling (at 7.1% national average)  is 5.2% higher than Clinton's was at the same point.  A "fly in the ointment" is Rasmussen Reports which is giving Trump a 1% lead.  They called it right in 2016 based on their algorithm to assess "likely voters", poll turnout was low.  This time it looks like poll turnout will be high (by low US standards).  Other polling platforms have also changed to report "likely" rather than "registered" voters - so the RCP averages in 2016 and 2020 may not be comparable.  You could assume that a high turnout should favour Biden, but that may underestimate the motivation of Trump supporters - who are behaving like they're in a cult, which is probably true for many of them.

Ivanka - or Melania?

I think Ivanka wants to be POTUS as well as Princess.  Melania wants to celebrate no Christmas in her own way - out of the public eye.

It is easy to confuse the two. They both look like Barbie dolls. Even Trump seems to mix them up sometimes. At least when it comes to who he wants to have sex with.

It's easy to tell if all 3 are together. Melania will be the one looking at him with disgust.

I think younger voters and black voters are turning out in droves and that means Chump is doomed.
