Worth a read:

https://medium.com/indica/i-lived-through-a-coup-america-is-having-one-now-437934b1dac3

One comment on that, the author has a bit of a chip on his shoulder about the US so you need to read his stuff with filters active. He's insightful, e.g. in his discussion of how Africa handles Covid19 better than the US does, but also a bit of a firebrand.

I also have a bit of a shoulder chip about the US and I found the author's piece scintillating, a unique and refreshing non-western perspective that truly illuminates. I will definitely make a point of reading more.

Selfishness is growing faster. The Me Me Me society where checks and balances, morals and ethics, that once were taught from birth, at home, in schools, at workplaces and in social gathering places are disappearing. The instant society we now have is partly to blame because people are not engaging brain before fingers or mouth. It is straight to fingers and Send. Lets film the injured dying person and then straight to fingers and Send. Instead of brain to fingers dialling 111/911/000

And social media is the enabling technology. Future historians will label it more destructive than nuclear weapons.

Social media have dumbed people down so much they can't distinguish fact from fantasy any longer, so whoever provides the best fantasy wins.

I thought there were only a few bits where it was apparent the author has a bit of a chip on his shoulder. For the most part I read it at face value, which is the perspective of someone who experienced a coup in another country and is drawing a lot of parallels. I didn't even really read it as being a specifically "non-western" perspective.

The main thing I took away is that while the ineptness of Trump and his ace team is laughable, it's far from being funny.

Is it making people dumber though? Or is it just they are now only exposed to what they want to hear, which just re-enforces their views? People have always been dumb, but now they are being bombarded tailored search results and targeted "news" that confirms their beliefs.

I honestly think it is actually making people dumber. In the good old days you had to make an effort to find affirmation for your own dumb ideas. Now it is all done for you.

The problem is that the commentary is quite biased, which calls its veracity into doubt. If you read X in the commentary is that because it's real or because the author wants it to be real?

This point in the writeup:

"Trump is incompetent and bumbling … but what he has done is shown up the cracks in the system and he has shown that things many people thought were impossible are not.

was mentioned by Trevor Noah two years ago, that what Trump has done to the Constitution and similar instruments is the equivalent of shining a UV light around a hotel room, exposing all the problems that you can't otherwise see.

It's terrifying how this might have actually, possibly worked. Like... how close he could have come to up-ending this with a competent legal team? I suspect if he'd approved the Covid19 stimulus he held off on signing, it would have fallen his way. The reality is the Biden camp almost threw it away in the last few days when Trump was doing five hours of campaign speeches a night.

One of the academics I follow on Twitter has pointed out that everyone assumes there is someone in the chain of command who can refuse to comply with an order to issue a nuclear strike. That's not the case. There's no scope to push back and question people's sanity or motives. You either do what you are told or you resign on the spot in disgrace. I think there's a lot of things in America that people assume isn't possible or can't happen that they should know otherwise about, especially after four years of Trump.

The Washington Post - Republican national security experts call on Trump to concede, begin transition

today

A group of leading GOP national security experts - including former homeland security secretary Tom Ridge - urged congressional Republicans on Monday to demand President Trump concede the election and immediately begin the transition to the incoming Biden administration.

President Trump’s refusal to permit the presidential transition poses significant risks to our national security, at a time when the U.S. confronts a global pandemic and faces serious threats from global adversaries, terrorist groups, and other forces,” said a statement signed by more than 100 GOP luminaries. ...

The message called on “Republican leaders - especially those in Congress - to publicly demand that President Trump cease his anti-democratic assault on the integrity of the presidential election.” ...

... the statement’s signers urged Republican leaders to “strongly oppose” Trump’s “dangerous and extra-legal efforts to threaten and intimidate state officials in order to prevent a vote by the Electoral College.” ...

Good luck with that ...  😕

The New York Times -  Biden Transition Live Updates: Michigan Certifies Election Results, Making Biden’s Win There Official

breaking

Michigan’s statewide electoral board approved its presidential vote tally on Monday, resisting pressure from President Trump to delay the process and paving the way for President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. to receive the state’s 16 electoral votes.

After reviewing the state Bureau of Elections’ report, which showed Mr. Biden winning the state by 154,000 votes over Mr. Trump, the board, comprising two Democrats and two Republicans, voted 3 to 0 with one [Republican] abstention to certify the results.

The certification officially delivers to Mr. Biden a key battleground that Mr. Trump had wrested away from Democrats four years ago, and rebuffs the president’s legal and political efforts to overturn the results with false claims of voter fraud and long-shot efforts to postpone certification.

EDIT:   and ...  The Washington Post - Michigan board votes to certify the state’s election results, dealing Trump another blow
