In case anyone's wondering about the snake on the tshirt

High Country News: The Gadsden flag is a symbol. But whose?

...The bright yellow banner is ... a forthright message read like a dare, a taunt — sort of a Colonial-era “Come at me, bro” — aimed at the British during the American Revolution.

In recent years, however, the classic rattlesnake flag has come to mean something very different. Some of the most violent and vehemently anti-government figures in the West have recast the ready-to-strike rattlesnake as a warning against the American government itself.

...In 2017, a man named Jeremy Christian thrust Nazi salutes into the spring air at an alt-right march in Portland, Oregon, while all around him people waved Gadsden flags. Weeks later, Christian lobbed racial slurs at two teenage girls on a crowded commuter train. When three other passengers confronted him, Christian slashed their throats with a knife, killing two of them. In court, where he would be convicted of murder, Christian was photographed holding up a small Gadsden flag.

“It’s become a symbol of anti-government, Patriot and militia members,” Travis McAdam, program director at Montana Human Rights Network, told me. The revival and repurposing of the Revolutionary symbol makes sense to McAdam: “So many of the militia folks that are out there view themselves as the modern-day version of this country’s founders.”

Once Biden is installed Trump will be bereft of oxygen and will fade away over a period of time. Others, acting Trumpier than Trump but with a politicians gloss, will take his place. And the GOP will be relieved to see the back of a loose cannon and will swing in behind 'the new guy'.

Prediction - he won't run in 2024.

And the left and right in the US don’t merely have different sets of media outlets for their different audiences: they have also developed distinct models of information-sharing, Wardle said. Mainstream media outlets still follow a traditional top-down broadcast model: an authoritative source produces the news and sends it out to consumers. The rightwing media ecosystem, which developed through talk radio, on the other hand, operates as a network of media personalities interacting with each other, “a community telling stories to their own community”, Wardle said.

She conveniently doesn't mention how the Left do it. I somehow suspect she is trying to pass off Mainstream and Left as one and the same, which is patently untrue. A bit of objective comparison/balance goes a long way to creating some credibility for the narrative. When I read commentary written like this I immediately start to distrust the message.

So I guess the Left doesn't have any media personalities interacting with each other telling stories to their own community. I sense a Tui moment.

Title says it all: "Trump to give ally Nunes the Presidential Medal of Freedom

President Trump on Monday is expected to give Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, according to someone familiar with the plans.

Nunes is a close ally of the president, and one of Trump’s most vocal supporters in his quest to undermine the Justice Department’s investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

“What he’s gone through, and his bravery, he should get a very important medal,” Trump said.

"Trump knows no limits as he tries to overturn the election"

That there are no limits to the lengths to which he will go in this ruinous effort was made clear from a phone call he made Saturday to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. In the call, Trump repeatedly urged Raffensperger to “find” enough votes to allow the secretary to recalculate the election results to show that the president, rather than President-elect Joe Biden, won the state.

The call, an audio of which was obtained by The Washington Post’s Amy Gardner, was as outrageous as it was chilling. Legal experts can debate how close to the line Trump was with the telephone call. Others can speculate about the president’s current state of mind. The contents of the call speak for themselves, and the audio excerpts should be heard by anyone who cares about the integrity of elections in America.

Here was a desperate president alternately begging, pleading, cajoling and, yes, seeming to threaten a state official — and fellow Republican — by asking for a change in the outcome of an election that already had been recounted and then certified.

The president was not arguing facts or offering evidence. Having failed time and again with multiple lawsuits brought by his campaign’s legal teams or their allies, all of which were rejected by the courts, Trump had nothing of substance to offer, just bluster and baseless claims that he has made nonstop since he lost. He was trolling with rumor, innuendo (and the muscle that comes with calling from the White House), attempting one more time to bully and intimidate Raffensperger.

I guess we can the thankful that the US is a country that no matter how idiotic and narcissistic the leader is there are checks and balances that will stop his madman antics eventually. It is sure testing times but I think the US system will come out the other side in a stronger state than before. A weaker system would have crumbled by now.

Not in the US it isn't, mainstream is perceived as left since the whole environment is tilted so far to the right. So it's an accurate portrayal if you're seeing things from inside the US bubble.

I don't think so. Trump is a sign of the ongoing corrosion of the US system. He's shown how far you can push things with no repercussions, future leaders will build on that and take it even further.

Thursday should be an entertaining day, must get the popcorn ready.

Anyone know when (or if) we'll see coverage or reports of the Count Confirmation?

Far as I can see, Washington is around 19 hours behind us.

In real time, that is. More like 170 years in cultural development.

Don't expect a quick fix - bad actors could prolong the agony considerably:

From a recent post:

"If Republican senators join House members in contesting all six [states] won by Biden where the Trump campaign has questioned the results - Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin - the proceedings could conceivably last 24 hours or more."

I disagree.

Trump is pushing the bounds of what is considered normal political behaviour. Many US political commentators are saying that the plan for Republican Senators to object to Electoral College votes in certain states will fail because it won't gain majority support in the House. What happens in a future election when both the House and Senate are controlled by Republicans, but a Democrat wins the Presidential vote?

And what about the voter disenfranchisement that is being sown due to all these attacks on the integrity of the election?

Sorry, I don't know much about this Nunes bloke, but what has he "gone through" exactly to deserve said medal?
