Florida neighbors agree: hurricanes, mosquitos, shot gun marriages to cousins, and alligators are preferred to Trumps

Florida newspaper "Palm Beach Post": Trump Jr., Guilfoyle moving in? Admirals Cove residents not thrilled with the idea

Donald Trump Jr. and his girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle are planning to spend millions of dollars on two luxurious waterfront homes in Admirals Cove, an exclusive gated community in Jupiter. But like Trump's father is seeing in Palm Beach, some would-be neighbors in Admirals Cove also don't want a Trump in their neighborhood, according to the head of the property owners association.

When word spread that the couple had contracts to purchase the two homes on adjacent lots in the community, about 30 residents contacted Peter Moore, general manager of the property owners association.

"About half have concerns about safety," Moore said. "The others have political concerns with what's happened in the last couple of weeks."

One member went further, bringing up accusations of Guilfoyle's improper behavior while working at Fox News, as well as reports that Trump Jr. is under criminal investigation in Washington D.C.for incitement of the Jan. 6 siege on the U.S. Capitol.

"There are news reports detailing improper behavior by Ms. Guilfoyle while employed at Fox News and news reports of possible criminal investigations of Donald Trump Jr.," one resident wrote to the board.

"I believe their membership would bring undesirable notoriety to the club, harm our reputation and have the potential for creating disharmony," the resident said.

On an email thread sent among residents this past weekend, several residents denounced Trump move into their community. One resident described the pair's purchase in the community as "a nightmare."

Brett Morris, Admirals Club general manager and chief operating officer, said ... "The Club has no say in who buys in Admirals Cove," Morris said. "The Club cannot disapprove of them for membership."

President Donald Trump already has faced a less than warm welcome on Palm Beach toward his plans to move into Mar-a-Lago Wednesday. In December, town officials received two letters from neighbors who don't want Trump, first lady Melania Trump and the couple's teenage son, Barron, to live at the club.

Those neighbors cite legal reasons and security concerns that should bar Trump from living at his private club as well as a general disdain for the former president.

"Neighbors of Mar-a-Lago, have a message for the outgoing commander in chief: We don't want you to be our neighbor and break our laws," read the opening salvo from a letter by the group of anonymous neighbors calling themselves The Palm Beach Committee. "We do not (want) Proud Boys, Skin Heads, Neo Nazi Crazies visiting Trump proposed new PB residence. We hope you agree!"

A Trump with some common-sense, or maybe he is the puppet-master, operating in the background!

People: Barron Trump skipped his father Donald Trump's final speech as President

The president's teenage son was the only Trump child to not listen to his father's final, self-congratulatory speech

...Barron also did not walk with Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump, his parents, as they exited the White House together for the final time earlier in the morning.

Barron, however, was on Air Force One with his family, according to reporters aboard the flight. The former first family departed Washington, D.C. and flew to Trump's private club in Florida before President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris took office.

...The roughly 10-minute speech was reflective of Trump's typical style — focusing in on his purported personal accomplishments above all. Trump vowed he and his family would "be back in some form."

"Have a good life," he said, before boarding the plane. "We will see you soon."

The Washington Post - Schumer says article of impeachment against Trump will be delivered to Senate on Monday

today

Sen. Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Friday that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will deliver the article of impeachment against President Trump on Monday ...

It will be a full trial; it will be a fair trial,” Schumer said during remarks on the Senate floor.

Make no mistake, there will be a trial, and when that trial ends, senators will have to decide if they believe Donald John Trump incited the insurrection against the United States.”

Times of Israel: Khamenei account suspended after tweet of Trump golfing under warplane shadow

Twitter freezes one of Iranian supreme leader’s accounts for threats to avenge 2020 Soleimani death, but main account that routinely threatens destruction of Jewish state still up

Twitter on Friday suspended an account of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s office after it posted a photomontage of former US President Donald Trump playing golf under the shadow of a warplane alongside a pledge to avenge a deadly 2020 drone strike he ordered.

The post on the @khamenei_site Twitter account late Thursday warned there was no escape from payback for the US strike outside Baghdad airport which killed Iran’s foreign military operations chief General Qassem Soleimani and his Iraqi lieutenant

The Guardian: We shouldn’t forget which Australian commentators carried water for Trump

When defending the ex-president became too much for even Mitch McConnell, it was surely beyond Joe Hockey and Greg Sheridan

Now that Donald Trump has gone, what will his ride-or-die supporters in Australian media do? How will they “own the libs” when the libs have their hand at the tiller? Whose ideas will they crib as US conservatism falls deeper into a post-Trump fugue?
...
Some Australian conservatives simply sprinted from the blast area following the Capitol assault. Former US ambassador and treasurer Joe Hockey, who golfed with Trump through the Muslim ban, Charlottesville, the separation of children from parents, and the Covid-19 disaster, did well enough in his appointed role to earn a reputation as a “Trump whisperer”. But the riot, apparently, was too much to stomach. Hockey was, now, “appalled at the behaviour and incitement” of Trump, his family and his camp followers.

...Perhaps he’s concerned about who will now be buttering his bread. His DC lobbying firm, Bondi Partners – staffed with cherry-picked Australian diplomatic talent – can no longer pitch the possibility of Hockey buttonholing Trump on the links.

...Greg Sheridan also rapidly turned on Trump. Throughout last year’s election campaign, Sheridan held out the prospect of a Trump victory, claiming on 1 November that the “genuine authoritarian threat” came from Biden supporters, since his campaign was backed with the threat of “a plague of violent riots all through the big cities from people who won’t accept democracy if it yields Trump.”

As late as 14 November, Sheridan was arguing that Trump offered a series of important lessons to conservatives around the world, including that “nationalism and patriotism are powerful forces that galvanise voters in a positive direction”.

When nationalism and patriotism galvanised voters in the direction of sacking a federal building in order to overturn the election result, Sheridan dropped them like so many hot yams. Suddenly, the deplorables he had previously celebrated as “Trump’s liberty-loving base” were depicted as “clowns, thugs and street-fighting fascists”.

For those who over-indexed on the president and his movement, and who cannot cut him loose quite so cleanly, it makes some sense to imagine the possibility of Trumpism without Trump. Enter James Morrow, whose work is difficult to talk about without courting paradox: its signature tone can only be described as low-energy histrionics.

Morrow has shamelessly barracked for Trump both on Sky News and in the Daily Telegraph, and like all such rightwing Trumpists in Australia, he has done so safe in the knowledge that Trump’s failures, such as his catastrophic mismanagement of the pandemic, will never have any effect on him.

...A week ago, in a column addressing the fallout from the Capitol riots, Morrow wrote that “while it is a long bow to say Trump incited the incident (he in fact tried to calm protesters down), it is also true that his conduct since the election will forever mar his achievements from Middle East peace to wage growth.”

...It’s embarrassing, of course, that this kind of commentary occupies such a prominent place in Australia’s national political discussion. But it’s just one example of the kind of thing that would have no home, and no constituency, without the active subsidy of News Corporation. That company’s role, over decades, in bringing us the disaster of Trumpism cannot be overstated.

That would account for the bearded shuffleboard team that arrived in Miami yesterday.

And who owns Newscorp, along with the majority of all OZ mediaworks? Rupert Murdoch.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_media_in_Australia
Controls over media ownership in Australia are laid down in the Broadcasting Services Act 1992, administered by the ACMA. Even with laws in place Australia has a high concentration of media ownership compared to other western countries. Ownership of national and the newspapers of each capital city are dominated by two corporations, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, (which was founded in Adelaide but is now based from the United States) and Nine Entertainment – Murdoch-owned titles account for nearly two-thirds (64.2 per cent) of metropolitan circulation and Nine-owned papers account for a further quarter (26.4 per cent).

According to Reporters Without Borders in 2006, Australia was in 35th position on a list of countries ranked by Press Freedom; well behind New Zealand (19th) and United Kingdom (27th) (but well ahead of the US, ranked 53rd). This ranking was primarily due to the restrictions imposed by the recent anti-terrorism laws. The problem, and the concentration of media ownership, was one of many mentioned on the television show Media Watch, broadcast on the government funded ABC. As of 2018 these rankings have changed with Australia moving up to 19th, New Zealand moving up to 8th and the United Kingdom falling to 40th.

Further reading seems to indicate that Fox may now be owned by Disney. Which would account for a lot.

Impeachment - the downside ...

The Washington Post - Trump impeachment trial will start week of Feb. 8

breaking

Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced on Friday that the Senate impeachment trial of Trump will begin the week of Feb. 8.

...  Schumer and Senate Democrats are balancing their aim of proceeding with Trump’s trial with Biden’s desire to fill out his Cabinet and move forward on a pandemic relief bill that he is hoping to push through Congress in the coming weeks.

Democrats, including Biden, had floated the possibility that the Senate could come to an agreement to do both simultaneously, but that would require unanimous agreement from Republicans, who appeared increasingly uninterested in a split schedule. ...

Though senators of both parties have suggested this trial could be shorter than Trump’s first trial, which wrapped up in February after 21 days, there are no guarantees of such brevity.

The House managers or Trump’s lawyers, for instance, could seek to call witnesses and present evidence, extending the proceedings indefinitely.

Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), the No. 3 GOP leader, said that once the trial begins, “the opportunity for President Biden to get a Cabinet in place is done until impeachment is done.

This basically stops President Biden in his tracks at a time when a number of Republicans believe that President Biden ought to be able to put a Cabinet in place,” he said.

"Trump has struggled to assemble a legal team"  Surprise!

and ...

The New York Times -  Senate Leaders Strike Deal to Delay Impeachment Trial

The House will transmit its impeachment article on Monday, but Trump’s trial will wait two weeks.

For those who can access it, there is an amazing story in the New York Times about a corrupt attempt to undermine the acting Attorney General in order to force the Justice Department to support Trump's arguments about the election being stolen. What I find heartening about this is how this and other plots against the democratic process were foiled by honourable people who insisted on taking their responsibilities seriously, regardless of political allegiance. As with Nixon, most of these were Republican-supporting conservatives who were not opposed to Trump as such, but who refused to do something they knew was wrong. This is the real strength of American democracy and it deserves to be celebrated. But for ordinary people who refused to act corruptly, even at the risk of their own jobs, America today would be marking the lifetime presidency of the tyrant Trump.

AND AGAIN THE GOP CHICKENS OUT

Prospects of convicting Trump erode as GOP grows vocal against Senate impeachment proceedings

".....The GOP arguments are now coming into sharper focus, claiming the proceedings are unconstitutional to try a former President and contending that the trial is moving on too short of a timeframe to give due process to Trump, ......"

WOW - since when has the GOP been interested in 'due process'.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

It's just occurred to me what I don't like about the new title. Donald Trump does not feel shame. In order to feel shame, you have to know you did wrong. Nothing Donald Trump does is wrong. So ... in a very real sense, he cannot be said to have left in shame.

Agreed.

It's not a movement, it's cynical selective virtue signalling. As long as Facebook and Twitter let politicians like Narendra Modi, who's incited far worse political riots than Trump did (the Gujarat riots alone left two thousand dead), have free reign on there, they're showing they don't care about the consequences of the content spread via their platforms. The moves on Trump in particular were mostly cynical dogpiling once it became obvious that he was in no position to retaliate any more, and Iran was the logical follow-on so they couldn't be accused of being partisan in the US.
