So, is it possible that this 'meddling' with the actual ballot papers could have some irrevocable deleterious effect, like if they were to 'lose' some Democratic ballots, or altered check boxes to favor Trump?

All they have to do is mark or mutilate ballots and then claim they are not valid. Who can prove when the damage occurred? This is just one problem with an unqualified, unsupervised group of self-appointed cowboys rummaging around through legally protected documents (which is what ballots are). The whole sorry business stinks to high heaven.

The purpose is not to change the result. That can't be done. It is to sow doubt and substantiate the claims of a fraudulent process in the hope of undermining the next election.

It's an alt-right codeword for "anything we don't like". That's not me being snarky, that's what it is, there's no defined meaning as used by the alt-right apart from "anything we don't like". Think of how "communism" was used thirty or fourty years ago as a universal "I disagree with that so I'll call it communism" and that's how socialism is used today (by the alt-right).

Last time I looked charges were placed against 440 people and still going.

I expect there are plenty still expecting Trump to return and pardon everyone, or maybe rapture will arrive first and save them.
