The Economist has just released its most recent YouGov poll of the US, which includes which news sources people trust. The only two news sources that more than 50% of Retrumplicans trust are the Weather Channel and Fox. Even very neutral just-the-facts primary news gatherers like AP and Reuters are untrusted, while complete garbage like Newsmax, OANN, and Breitbart are trusted more than Reuters.

In Putinist Russia, they have to ban the truth in order to get people to buy the made-up propaganda. In the US, the Retrumplicans opt in voluntarily.

"The Weather Channel" has published several news items around climate change, and criticized Trump several times. Such as when Trump used a winter storm to mock climate change, confusing weather and climate again.

Fox News announced it's own weather channel eight months ago.

The Guardian: Fox News’ planned 24-hour weather channel has climate experts worried

...Last year, Tucker Carlson rubbished the idea that forest fires on the west coast were a result of climate crisis – serious climate scientists, however, agree that the fires are very much linked to the breakdown – and suggested environmental hazards were a liberal conspiracy.

Carlson’s colleague Laura Ingraham has insisted, contrary to experts’ findings, that the planet is in a “natural” cycle of warming, and suggested that environmental activists like Greta Thunberg had been “brainwashed”, while Sean Hannity said the left’s “obsession” with the climate was a “political tool”.

“The danger of [Fox News Media] running a weather channel is that if they pervert news about the weather anything like how they’ve perverted news about climate change and energy politics, millions of Americans will be further misled about this crisis,” said Geoffrey Supran, research fellow at Harvard University’s department of the history of science.

“It’s been shown that the most important predictors of public support for climate action are understanding that this crisis is real, human-caused, serious and solvable,” Supran said.

“If, as I and I’m sure others fear, [Fox News Media’s] weather channel downplays the links between global warming and extreme weather, it will only solidify their viewers’ existing biases against climate action.”

The tenor of Fox News hosts’ commentary matches with data from Public Citizen, a non-profit thinktank. In 2019, Public Citizen found that in the first half of the year Fox News devoted 247 segments to climate crisis. Of those, “212 (86%) were dismissive of the climate crisis, cast warming and its consequences in doubt or employed fearmongering when discussing climate solutions”, Public Citizen reported.

“Fox News has been a powerful engine of climate misinformation for years – so powerful, in fact, that its influence has been named the ‘Fox News Effect’,” Maibach said.

“One of our studies, for example, showed that before Fox News began its attack on the Green New Deal, most conservatives supported its core policy proposals. Six months later – after Fox had relentlessly attacked it and its sponsors – support for those proposals dropped to near zero among frequent Fox viewers.”

The NY Times - Jan. 6 Panel Has Evidence for Criminal Referral of Trump, but Splits on Sending

today

WASHINGTON - The leaders of the House committee investigating the Capitol attack have grown divided over whether to make a criminal referral to the Justice Department of former President Donald J. Trump, even though they have concluded that they have enough evidence to do so ...

The debate centers on whether making a referral - a largely symbolic act - would backfire by politically tainting the Justice Department’s expanding investigation into the Jan. 6 assault and what led up to it.

Despite concluding that they have enough evidence to refer Mr. Trump for obstructing a congressional proceeding and conspiring to defraud the American people, some on the committee are questioning whether there is any need to make a referral.

The Justice Department appears to be ramping up a wide-ranging investigation, and making a referral could saddle a criminal case with further partisan baggage at a time when Mr. Trump is openly flirting with running again in 2024. ...

The next day, Trump clarifies "When I said '"when I didn't win the election' I meant 'when I didn't not lose the election'" :)

News Week:

Former President Donald Trump said on video that he had not won the 2020 election after claiming for over two years to have been the rightful winner.

Trump made the comment during an interview published Monday by The Atlantic with a group of historians working on a book about his presidency.

...During part of the interview when he was discussing his attempts to get South Korean President Moon Jae-in to pay more for U.S. military support, Trump said: "when I didn't win the election, he had to be the happiest..." before revising his comment to suggest that Iran, China and Russia might have been happier.

Palin may not win the nomination, even with Trump's endorsement: https://newrepublic.com/article/166056/sarah-palin-quit-alaska-governor-voters-remember

And some are wondering if the shine of Trump's endorsement is starting to fade (I really, really hope so): https://newrepublic.com/article/166078/trump-endorsement-dr-oz-midterms

I am convinced that Trump's shine is wearing off. When he first burst onto the political scene, he was new and different and had appeal to those who felt alienated from establishment politics. Now he has been around the block and has nothing new to offer and people are moving on. This is a normal progression except he does not have the intelligence to understand that. But for most people, he is yesterday's news.

For a decent number of Republicans though, they still think Trump is the man. But if 2024 became a rematch of 2020? I think that's anyone's guess, but a lot can happen in 2.5 years. Maybe Joe could turn a corner and his approval ratings start to rise again.

Yes, Trump got over 70 million votes in 2020, but as I heard one commentator say, "70 million votes isn't the electorate". One thing - aside from coronavirus - that I feel was his downfall was he didn't even try to unite the two sides: Democrats and Republicans. All he did was appeal to his base, which worked, but to a lesser degree than 2016 (I know a few Republicans who voted for Joe as they were p'd off at Trump's poor/slow handling of the pandemic), and it wasn't enough for him to win the election.

He'll always have his base, but I don't think it would be enough now to carry him through another election to the point where he won again. Then again, I could be wrong, a la 2016.

The Washington Post -  Postal Service inspector general finds no evidence of voter fraud

today

Seventeen months after the 2020 election, the U.S. Postal Service’s Inspector General’s office said Tuesday it found no evidence to corroborate allegations that ballots were stolen and transported across state lines from Bethpage, N.Y., to Lancaster, Pa., putting an end to the wild assertion that, among others, undergirded former president Donald Trump’s false claims of election fraud in the aftermath of the presidential contest.

Why has it taken 17 months to complete such a simple investigation?

As with many things "Trump" this story has so many twists-and-turns that if a screen-writer wrote it for a movie script they would be told the audience would say the story was unbelievable.

February, Colorado Politics: Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters arrested by Grand Junction police for resisting search warrant

"...A Mesa County District Court judge found in October that Peters and Knisley allowed the introduction of a security vulnerability into the county’s voting system equipment and ruled that she had breached her duties.

In August, Griswold ordered Mesa County to replace its voting equipment after system passwords showed up in a video posted online. Days later, exact digital copies of the county's election system hard drive were posted online after Griswold's staff discovered that 24-hour video surveillance of the election equipment had been turned off.

That same month, Peters appeared at a symposium hosted by MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, a proponent of claims that the 2020 election was rigged against former president Donald Trump.

Lindell said he flew Peters in for the event on his private plane..."

April, Colorado 9 News: [Mesa County Clerk] Tina Peters responds after [MyPillow CEO] Mike Lindell said he donated $800,000 to defense fund

Colorado Secretary of State candidate Tina Peters now says she has no knowledge of MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell paying for her defense on felony charges related to the tampering of voting machines.

That contradicts Peters' own word. She previously directed people to send money to Lindell for her legal defense.

At a rally in Denver on Tuesday, Lindell told 9NEWS reporter Marshall Zelinger that he had contributed as much as $800,000 of his own money to Peters' legal defense.

That could raise questions under Colorado's ethics law which advises legal fund donors be disclosed, and personal gifts over $65,000 are generally prohibited,
