kingdragonfly: "How about we get every single Floridian back into their homes and back to normal before we send one more cent to the Ukraine?"

Good replies to the drugged out trust fund baby.

... who hasn't realised yet that it's a country called "Ukraine", not the Soviet-era "the Ukraine".

Or maybe he has, since denying its sovereignty is what one of Putin's useful idiots would do, and he's certainly proven in the past that he's a prizewinning idiot.

Not to defend the dolt, I think it's a common mistake from Americans because of popularity "the USA," such as "made in the USA"

In the movie Borat, the comedian Sacha Baron Cohen would say "in USA" to emphasize he was speaking English as a second language.

You only make the mistake of "the Ukraine" once because Ukrainians definitely don't like it.

See The USA versus USA

From Wikipedia:

"Ukraine is one of a few English country names traditionally used with the definite article the. Use of the article was standard before Ukrainian independence, but has decreased since the 1990s. For example, the Associated Press dropped the article "the" on 3 December 1991. Use of the definite article was criticised as suggesting a non-sovereign territory, much like "the Lebanon" referred to the region before its independence, or as one might refer to "the Midwest", a region of the United States.

In 1993, the Ukrainian government explicitly requested that, in linguistic agreement with countries and not regions,] the Russian preposition в be used instead of на, and in 2012, the Ukrainian embassy in London further stated that it is politically and grammatically incorrect to use a definite article with Ukraine. Use of Ukraine without the definite article has since become commonplace in journalism and diplomacy (examples are the style guides of The Guardian and The Times)."

People in this country, especially the media, insist on referring to Hawke's Bay as The Hawke's Bay. Those who know better hate it.

Rikkitic: If the figures depicted were not a well-known married couple, then it could certainly be seen as racist because the implication would be that a black man was being made to clean up a white woman's shit solely because he was black. But that is clearly not the case here. This cartoon is not about race. It is about a marriage in which a long-suffering husband has to deal with problems created by his embarrassing wife.

It makes no sense to me because in real life there is no indication Justice Thomas is embarrassed by his wife or does any cleaning up after his wife in any sense. It does make more sense to me after other posters mentioned a cleaning-up-after-the-circus meme which I was not familiar with and seems to be common knowledge some places. Even so, it makes very little sense to put Thomas in that role I just don't get it. Perhaps it's just a bad cartoon.

The Atlantic: Deconstructing Clarence Thomas

...[Thomas'] career as a judge is a study in brutalism.

Thomas is by far the most conservative justice on a very conservative Court.

He advances a reactionary legal philosophy that would take America back to the 1930s.

That won’t happen: Unwilling to compromise and often unable to attract the vote of a single colleague, Thomas frequently writes only for himself.

He also endured the most searing confirmation battle of any modern American public servant, an ordeal that put race, sex, and power in the national spotlight. By all accounts, including his own, the experience nearly destroyed him—not to mention what it did to Anita Hill, who accused him of sexual harassment.

Thomas has since nursed a long list of grievances, vowing to “outlive” his critics and writing in his 2007 memoir, My Grandfather’s Son, about a host of antagonists: “posturing zealots,” “sanctimonious whites,” and—of Anita Hill—“my most traitorous adversary.”.
...

Youtube: Anita Hill: ‘There's Probably Plenty Of Evidence Of Conflict Of Interest’ For Clarence Thomas

MSNBC

Anita Hill, lawyer and professor at Brandeis University, joins Andrea Mitchell with her reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and to discuss Justice Clarence Thomas’ wife Ginni’s controversial political activism.

“There's probably plenty of evidence of conflict of interest,” says Hill. “There need to be in place some systems for requiring a recusal when there is an obvious conflict or a semblance of conflict.”

gzt:  This cartoon looks a bit racist trope in America to me. I'm surprised NY Times didn't think about that before they published it.
This cartoon by Bob Englehart was not published by the The NY Times. It is from Tulsa World - centre left by US standards, and definitely not a fan of Virginia Thomas. My own impression is that it reflects the problems of living with a far-right anarchist, regardless of race.

Englehart is a prolific cartoonist, does not create exclusively for TW, and has worked for several other publications. Including the Hartford Courant where the editor apologized for the paper under a banner "Racist Cartoon Insulted Community". Englehart did not have the courage to admit he got it wrong or he retained his view. The same paper removed a blog post from Englehart saying of residents in minority neighbourhoods "losers breed losers". Again, no apology or recognition is recorded from Englehart. There are indications other Englehart cartoons were removed from online services. I did not expect this.

The fact Englehart felt entitled to his views at the time and perhaps still does indicates to me something very wrong. Connecticut retained elements of segregation until the mid 1970s. Tusla, some history there too.

Points taken. That "losers breed losers" so offensive on many levels that I'd expect Trump to say "that was a bit extreme"

...and STILL no orange jumpsuit! Is the brand of Teflon spray that he uses on the market? Or does it only come out of his mouth?

I suspect it is a biohazard by the effect on those around him! Have they tried the EPA to shut him down on Environmental grounds?

Trump later added "When I ran for the leader of the Lost Boys, Tootles, Nibs, Slightly, Curly, and The Twins said they all voted for me. Peter Pan is a known kidnapper. Election Fraud!"

Washington Post: Actually, Washington and Lincoln would crush Trump in an election

...in a speech he gave in Florida on Wednesday., Trump claimed that, shortly before the pandemic began, a pollster came into the Oval Office.

“He said, ‘Sir’, if George Washington and Abraham Lincoln came alive from the dead and they formed a president-vice president team, you would beat them by 40 percent.’ That’s how good our numbers were!”

Nope. Even then, before the pandemic and before the aftermath of his election loss, Trump would have lost. Badly.

KETANJI BROWN JACKSON BRAVELY INFILTRATES SHADOWY ALT-RIGHT GROUP

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Carrying out a mission fraught with danger, a woman named Ketanji Brown Jackson has bravely infiltrated a shadowy alt-right group with a menacing agenda that threatens to topple the tentpoles of American society.

The group, garbed in black robes, meets in secret behind closed doors in the heart of the nation’s capital, experts believe.

Having successfully plotted to destroy women’s bodily autonomy, the group is currently scheming to eliminate voting rights and marriage equality, as well as to hasten the spread of military-style assault weapons across the country.

Harland Dorrinson, a former Navy SEAL, hailed Jackson’s courage. “When I served in Afghanistan and Iraq, I spent plenty of time behind enemy lines, but this gutsy woman's efforts far outweigh mine. I mean, she's not even armed."

Surprise !!!   🙃

The NY Times - Justice Dept. Is Said to Believe Trump Has More Documents

breaking

A top Justice Department official* told former President Donald J. Trump’s lawyers in recent weeks that the department believed he had not returned all the documents he took when he left the White House ...

It is not clear what steps the Justice Department might take to retrieve any material it thinks Mr. Trump still holds. ...

Mr. Trump’s apparent reluctance so far to cooperate puts the department in the fraught position of having to decide from among an array of difficult choices, including whether to give up on trying to obtain the documents, issuing a subpoena for them, obtaining another search warrant or pushing for Mr. Trump to attest under oath that he has handed over all the materials in his possession.

Especially ask him to attest under oath.

They really really need to get this dangerous narcissistic idiot into court and in the box under oath with a judge who will not stand for any BS.
