Reuters - Judge rejects Donald Trump bid to dismiss E. Jean Carroll's first defamation lawsuit

NEW YORK, June 29  - A federal judge on Thursday rejected Donald Trump's bid to dismiss the first of writer E. Jean Carroll's two lawsuits accusing the former U.S. president of defamation for denying he raped her in the mid-1990s.

U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan found no merit in Trump's arguments that he deserved absolute presidential immunity, and that many of his statements about Carroll were opinion and thus protected.

Excellent news!  đź™‚

It's a good thing Trump and his shoddy advisors are too [fill-in-the-blank] to know about the Streisand effect.

Bringing a countersuit against his sexual abuse victim just
  • means more press about his sexual abuse
  • will turn off more female conservative voters, because it's more confirmation of his bullying.

Trump shouldn't have a problem with anything Giuliani says.

"'You know, you've been investigated years and years, millions and millions of pages of documents, they found nothing'. Someone said 'You are the cleanest on Earth when you think about it.'

I think I'm the most honest human being, perhaps, that God ever created."

It must be fascinating living in Trump's reality. Unfortunately, that would explode the head of any normal person.

Another "perfect" phone call ...

The Washington Post - Trump pressured Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey to overturn 2020 election

01 July 2023

In a phone call in late 2020, President Donald Trump tried to pressure Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) to overturn the state’s presidential election results, saying that if enough fraudulent votes could be found it would overcome Trump’s narrow loss in Arizona ...

Trump also repeatedly asked Vice President Mike Pence to call Ducey and prod him to find the evidence to substantiate Trump’s claims of fraud ...

Pence called Ducey several times to discuss the election, though he did not follow Trump’s directions to pressure the governor.

The extent of Trump’s efforts to cajole Ducey into helping him stay in power has not before been reported ...

[Governor Ducey defended the results of Arizona’s 2020 election, and certified the election. Ducey was not re-elected Governor.]

Evil billionaires, bent on destroying democracy, accidently doing the right thing, maybe???

New York Times: Koch Network Raises Over $70 Million for Push to Sink Trump

The political network established by the conservative industrialists Charles and David Koch has raised more than $70 million for political races as it looks to help Republicans move past Donald J. Trump, according to an official with the group.

With some of this large sum to start, the network, Americans for Prosperity Action, plans to throw its weight into the G.O.P. presidential nominating contest for the first time in its nearly 20-year history. The network spent nearly $500 million supporting Republican candidates and conservative policies in the 2020 election cycle alone.

Two groups closely affiliated with Charles Koch contributed $50 million of the more than $70 million that has been raised (David Koch died of cancer in 2019). Mr. Koch is a major shareholder in Koch Industries, which contributed $25 million to Americans for Prosperity Action, according to a preliminary draft of Federal Election Commission filings. Another $25 million was donated by Stand Together, a nonprofit he founded.

The Koch network’s goal in the 2024 presidential primaries, which has been described only indirectly in written internal communications, is to stop Mr. Trump from winning the Republican nomination. In February, a top political official in the network, Emily Seidel, wrote a memo to donors and activists saying it was time to “have a president in 2025 who represents a new chapter.”

Since then, Republican voters have rallied around the former president, with his support in polls strengthening his front-runner status after his two indictments. Some of the biggest donors in Republican politics, including some in the Koch network, had been hanging their hopes on Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida as Mr. Trump’s most promising rival. But Mr. DeSantis has disconcerted many donors with his early campaign stumbles and a slip in his poll numbers.

Independent: House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy knows he crossed the line with Donald Trump

Few people embody Republicans’ relationship and acquiescence to Donald Trump more than House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

In 2016, then-House Majority Leader McCarthy told colleagues, “There’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump,” in reference to the former Republican congressman Dana Rohrabacher who frequently praised Russian President Vladimir Putin.

When Mr Trump won the presidency, Mr McCarthy hastily mended fences, making sure to have a jar full of Starburst candies containing only Mr Trump’s favourite flavors: cherry and strawberry.

Mr McCarthy’s bridge-building seemed to pay off as Mr Trump dubbed the congenial Californian “My Kevin.” Indeed, arguably no Republican elite played a bigger role in welcoming Mr Trump back into the Republican fold after the January 6 riot than Mr McCarthy. In the days after the attack on the Capitol, he told his colleagues, “I’ve had it with this guy” and said on the House floor that Mr Trump bore responsibility for the assault. Then, only a few weeks later, he flew to Mar-a-Lago to kiss Mr Trump’s ring.

In his marathon 15 rounds to become House speaker earlier this year, Mr McCarthy again threw Mr Trump a lifeline. In the weeks after the 2022 midterm elections, Republican leaders, perhaps unwilling to blame the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v Jackson decision, said Mr Trump’s endorsement of bum candidates cost them a red wave. But when Mr McCarthy finally earned the gavel, he thanked Mr Trump for supporting him and said “I don't think anybody should doubt his influence.”

Those extraordinary lengths Mr McCarthy has taken to get on Mr Trump’s good side made his remarks to CNBC on Tuesday all the more stunning. To recap, Mr McCarthy said that “Can (Trump) win that election? Yeah, he can. The question is, is he the strongest to win the election? I don’t know that answer.”

Melania can't be happy she's testifying regarding her husband's infidelity

AP News: District attorney, ethics panel back judge in Donald Trump hush-money case, finding no evidence of bias

Donald Trump’s tempestuous views aside, Manhattan prosecutors say neither the former president nor his lawyers have shown any evidence to support their claims that the judge in his hush-money criminal case has an anti-Trump bias.
...
Prosecutors also responded Tuesday to attempts by Trump’s lawyers to fight a pair of subpoenas, including a request to writer E. Jean Carroll’s lawyers for the full contents of a deposition Trump gave in connection with a lawsuit that resulted in a $5 million sexual abuse and defamation judgment against him. While Trump’s lawyers have described the request as overly broad, prosecutors said the full transcript and video of the deposition — not all of which has been released publicly — is “clearly relevant” to their own case.

The second subpoena concerns emails exchanged among Trump Organization employees and the White House, as well as severance and confidentiality agreements for key figures in Trump’s company. Prosecutors are also seeking emails between Trump’s wife, Melania, and Rhona Graff, a longtime company executive.

Banana Republic song (apologies to Chiquita Banana)

I'm Despotic Banana and I've come to say
Republics have to decline in a certain way
When courts are filled with judges who have been bought and paid
Republics serve their masters and none come to your aid

They can put them in their pocket
They can make them go to war-or
Any way they want to own you
Even if they want to clone you

But despots like the climate of a very, very evil loud dictator
So you should never put off voting until a time much later

Off subject but the multinational United Fruit Company, which later became known as Chiquita Brands International, was involved in overthrowing the Guatemalan government in 1954 with the help of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

The Nation: When the United Fruit Company tried to buy Guatemala

In 1952, the United Fruit Company made the elected government of Guatemala a simple offer: If y’all want democratic self-government so badly, you can have it—for a small fee. It’ll cost you about $19,355,000.
