From the above New Republic site:

New Poll Finds Republicans Seriously Think Trump Is the Greatest Person of Faith

05 Jan 2024

More Republican voters believe Donald Trump is a person of faith than nearly any other politician.

Despite Trump’s sin-filled legal tribulations, 64 percent of Republicans reported that they viewed him as a person of faith ...

"There are none so blind as those who will not see".  The proverb has been traced back in English to 1546 (John Heywood), and resembles the Biblical verse Jer. 5:21.

Trumpism is a true cult, and a large one.  πŸ™

I’m very aware of the technical arguments about legality but that is not a “counter-view” to all the arguments put forward against doing this. The ballot bans are “dubious” in every sense of the word: suspect or not honest when these appear as partisan actions e.g. Democrat official; less certain of outcome as it appears to be increasing Trump support and will likely be only work in progress until the Supreme Court rules; and still questionable ethically and morally, e.g. why not let the voters decide?

Why not let the law decide? Whether some people like it or not, the 14th amendment exists. It is part of the US constitution. If it is bad law, it can be repealed, just like the 18th amendment was. Until that happens, it remains the law of the land. Section 3 does not say that someone has to be convicted of insurrection in a court of law to be disqualified. It just says someone has to have participated in insurrection. There is nothing at all ‘dubious’ about the actions of the acourts and State officials in banning Trump. They are simply following the law, as they are supposed to.

I used all three meanings of the word dubious with relevant examples. While the officials and courts are following the law, these actions also have demonstrably partisan elements.

Anyway, you are totally missed my point. I’m not arguing for Trump - I would not vote for him - or against any statute - I’m disinterested. I’m stating that these actions appear more likely to prove counterproductive because they are likely to only resolve at the ballot box and the Supreme Court. Neither pathway is assured of preventing Trump being reelected.

I think that Trump’s political opponents could do better to halt the drift of voters towards him. Trump is gaining support from the ranks of those who voted for Biden and the Democrats. Independent candidates are also gaining at least 20% of those swinging votes.

It may well be that these legal actions are being taken because, as some commentators have already said, his enemies fear that there is no candidate capable of keeping Trump out. That is sad if it is true.

RawStory - 'God gave us Trump': Ex-president posts video declaring himself to be divinely chosen

05 Jan 2024

Polls show that a large percentage of Trump supporters believe that God personally picked the twice-impeached, thrice-married, four-time-indicted former president to lead the United States - and Trump himself is now encouraging that belief.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump promoted a video that [repeatedly] declared that "God gave us Trump" as His personal representative to lead the United States of America. ...

The video also suggested that Trump finished his week by attending church services every Sunday, despite there being no evidence that this is the case.

Watch the video at this link: “GOD MADE TRUMP”

(WARNING : 2:45 of nauseating sycophantic pseudo-religious garbage)

Give me some credit. I did not miss your point at all. It is also abundantly clear you are not in any way a Trump supporter.

My point is that banning Trump from participating in the election is a matter of law. It is not a partisan issue and it has nothing to do with (should have nothing to do with) influencing the election. Either he broke the law or he didn’t. If he did he should be sanctioned. Even if that actually increases his vote. Enforcement of the law should not be contingent on whether it is politically expedient or not or causes civil unrest. Either you have a nation of laws or you don’t.

If there is any partisanship here, it is overwhelmingly on the Republican side. They have repeatedly shown themselves to be willing to use every dirty trick there is to gain advantage. All they care about is winning. They don’t care how they do that.

If an official who bans Trump happens to be a Democrat, that does not make it partisan. What is partisan is all the Republican officials who do nothing.

Personally I do not think banning Trump from the election is a good move. He should be defeated by ballot. But the issue will be decided by the Supreme Court and that is as it should be. According to the law.

This is truly alarming. It is also probably the first stage of America becoming a totalitarian theocracy. In spite of what I have said elsewhere about the rule of law, I do fear that Americans could be sleepwalking into hell. The evangelical element is truly dangerous. This has nothing to do with fact or evidence or even common sense. It is religious zealotry and it can't be appealed to with reason. To put it in religious terms, Trump meets in every way the biblical definition of the Antichrist.

The case against:

The Antichrist will become a world leader, so he is a politician of sorts.

But, Trump isn’t the Antichrist. He isn’t smart or eloquent enough.

The Antichrist is supposed to have a magnetic personality and to woo nations, not alienate them.

He will be a brilliant orator and debater, known for his charm.

It's all about perception. After he becomes dictator of America, Trump will want to become dictator of the world. He will be the biggest bestest dictatorist dictator there has ever been!

To Trump's worshippers, he is smart and eloquent. Compared to some of them, he actually is.

To those who stick to him, he definitely has magnetic qualities. The nations will fall into line.

Look at his fans. Every garbled burp that passes his lips is a precious expression of mystic wisdom.

I don't believe they will. Most European peoples and us at this end of the globe think he's a dick head. As do most of our leaders.

And he's going to die in the next few years and there is nobody to replace him.

Reuters - US Supreme Court to hear Trump appeal of Colorado ballot disqualification

WASHINGTON, Jan 5 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear Donald Trump's appeal of a judicial decision barring the former president from the state's Republican primary ballot, taking up a politically explosive case with major implications for the 2024 presidential election.

At issue is the Colorado Supreme Court's Dec. 19 ruling disqualifying Trump from the state's Republican primary ballot based on language in the U.S. Constitution's 14th Amendment for engaging in insurrection, involving the Jan. 6, 2021, attack by his supporters on the U.S. Capitol.

The justices made their decision to hear the case with unusual speed. Trump, the frontrunner for his party's nomination to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden in the November election, filed his appeal on Wednesday. ...

The case will be argued on Feb. 8.

I was just thinking, during WWII, didn't Hitler have almost all of Germany on his side for everything he did? I've seen videos of Hitler speaking to raptorous crowds, hanging off his every word. Did all of Germany support Hitler? I know a good portion of the American population don't support Trump.

Reason I suggest Hitler is I don't know enough about WWII to be able to confirm, but I don't think Trump comes near to him as much as a true dictator, who - as I understand - usually gets everyone on his side, fully believing in his cause. Safe to say that's not 100% of the US population.

re the second comment: He really is leading a cult of personality. Was there anyone Reagan-like to take over from him when he left office? Bush didn't have Reagan's charisma, by a long shot - I think he only won because he just happened to VP at the time. I also agree with "nobody to replace him" although there's certainly a long line of Trump-wannabes now.
