Roger Stone makes me think that if Trump hadn't pardoned him, all the sisters in his prison would have been staring into the face of Richard Nixon every time they banged him. Would this have made things better or worse?

Probably would have made Roger more popular with any old lags who'd voted Nixon. The younger ones'd probably prefer him dressed in a Marjorie Taylor Green T-shirt and a blond wig.

The NY Times - Trump Leads in 5 Key States ...

Donald J. Trump leads President Biden in five crucial battleground states, a new set of polls shows, as a yearning for change and discontent over the economy and the war in Gaza among young, Black and Hispanic voters threaten to unravel the president’s Democratic coalition.

The surveys by The New York Times, Siena College and The Philadelphia Inquirer found that Mr. Trump was ahead among registered voters in a head-to-head matchup against Mr. Biden in five of six key states: Michigan, Arizona, Nevada, Georgia and Pennsylvania.

Mr. Biden led among registered voters in only one battleground state, Wisconsin.

The NY Times - Cohen Testifies Trump Promised to Reimburse Hush-Money Payment

today

Cohen describes his efforts to protect Trump’s campaign.

Michael D. Cohen, the one-time fixer for Donald J. Trump and the star witness at his criminal trial, described for jurors the “catastrophic” threat Stormy Daniels’s account of a sexual liaison with Mr. Trump posed to his campaign, and his boss’s instruction to pay her to make it go away: “Just do it.”

The $130,000 hush-money payment Mr. Cohen made to Ms. Daniels in the waning days of the 2016 presidential race was closely tied to the 34 felony counts of falsifying business records against Mr. Trump.

Mr. Cohen testified that Mr. Trump had ordered him to make the payment as Election Day loomed, fearing that Ms. Daniels could tank his chances to win the presidency, and promised he would be repaid.

Cohen will return to the stand on Tuesday.

Reuters - US Federal Election Commission gives Trump 45 more days to file personal financial disclosures

WASHINGTON, May 8 (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Election Commission on Wednesday granted Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump a 45-day extension to file personal financial disclosures.

Trump, who is facing significant court fines and legal fees while he campaigns ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential election, had been due to submit a report on his personal financial situation to the Federal Election Commission on May 15.

But a legal representative for Trump on Wednesday requested the agency grant the candidate an extension, citing "the complexities of his financial holdings," according to a copy of the letter released by the agency. A second letter released by the agency showed it had granted the request.

Déjà vu. Again.

The Guardian: Florida is a prime example of Trump’s vise grip on state Republican parties
...
“The big, sort of under-the-radar story in American politics over the last couple of years was the way Trump and his people had taken over state parties across the country,” said Dan Judy, a senior analyst for North Star Opinion Research, a Republican guidance and consultancy company based in Virginia.

“Even early in the primary process, a year and a half ago when Ron DeSantis was riding high and leading a lot of the polls, I was always thinking: Trump has control of the state parties, he’s got his people in, and they are, for lack of a better word, going to attempt to rig the process in favor of Donald Trump.

“If you look at it, that’s exactly what happened. A lot of state parties changed their rules to make their primaries winner-takes-all, which absolutely helped Trump, especially as it came down to a one-on-one with Nikki Haley. It was clear that she was going to have to win some of these things outright to get any delegates at all, and she couldn’t do it.

“The fact that the Florida GOP has also been completely taken over by Trump folks is really indicative of a trend that has happened everywhere.”

Politico: Nigel Farage gets Donald Trump job offer

Brexiteer Nigel Farage said he has a “firm job offer” on the table related to Donald Trump’s U.S. re-election campaign.

In an interview with U.K. broadcaster Talk, former Brexit Party leader Farage — who has repeatedly flirted with a new gig stateside — said he’s been offered the chance to “indirectly” help the Republican candidate’s fresh bid for the White House.

“I do actually have a very firm job offer on the table from America, which is very, very tempting,” Farage told Talk presenter Julia Hartley-Brewer.

“It’s a confidential offer, obviously, but it would be very heavily involved with the election campaign,” Farage said. “Obviously, who becomes president of America matters.”
...
For his part, Trump has described Farage as a “handsome guy” at a campaign rally earlier this year — and appeared via video at Farage’s lavish 60th birthday celebration in April to congratulate the Brexiteer on a “truly remarkable sixty years on Earth.”

In his Monday interview, Farage said that the job offer was not related to any diplomatic positions, such as the soon-to-be-vacant role of British ambassador to the U.S.

“No this is something separate to that, but very much related [to Donald Trump.] It would indirectly be to help Donald Trump’s campaign,” Farage said.

Sounds like not working for Trump, not working for the RNC. Even a super-pac would be directly working for Trump's re-election. Is Cambridge Analytica restarting? ; )

I still have faith that Allan Lichtman will give a different result. I've got my fingers crossed until he does that, which I believe is meant to be sometime in August.

The NY Times - Defense Tries to Cast Cohen as Motivated by Vengeance Against Trump

Cohen’s testimony is the linchpin of the case. Here’s the latest.

A lawyer for Donald J. Trump is aggressively questioning Michael D. Cohen, the key witness in the criminal case against the former president, grilling him about the man he’s said should be caged like an “animal.”

The defense is cross-examining Mr. Cohen, Mr. Trump’s one-time lawyer, after roughly nine hours of testimony over two days in which he detailed a $130,000 hush-money payment he gave to a porn star, and his repayment by Mr. Trump.

The reimbursement is the central element of the 34 felony charges against the former president.

Mr. Cohen will be the last prosecution witness ...

EDIT:  see also: Reuters - Michael Cohen grilled on stand by Trump team  ( free link )

Key developments so far:

  •  Michael Cohen said he used to lie for Trump
  •  But he turned, calling him a 'dictator douchebag'
  •  The defense is cross-examining Cohen
  •  There is no trial Wednesday
  •  Defense cross-examination continues Thursday

In any other western democracy politicians of all persuasions would avoid a case like this like the plague. Not in the USA. It's the ultimate in cringeworthy.

I'm getting worried about the Georgia case.

It's the one where Trump led a "criminal racketeering enterprise", in which he and all other defendants "knowingly and willfully joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome" of the 2020 U.S. presidential election in Georgia. All defendants are charged with one count of violating Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) statute, which has a penalty of five to twenty years in prison.

New York Times: New Challenge for Judge in Trump Georgia Case: His Own Election

There are many reasons to believe that former President Donald J. Trump will not be going to trial in Georgia anytime soon. A controversy involving sex, money and the district attorney has slowed down the election interference case. Dozens of pretrial motions have yet to be resolved, and the United States Supreme Court and the Georgia Court of Appeals must still weigh in on key legal questions.

While it may not create nearly as much drag on the proceedings, there is also the fact that the presiding judge is busy running for election.

Very busy.

In the last few weeks, Judge Scott McAfee of Fulton Superior Court has been on a dizzying tour of the Atlanta area in an effort to hold on to his job — and in so doing, hold on to the Trump case, one that could eventually secure the judge’s place in the annals of history. Since early March, he has, by his own count, attended more than 30 campaign-related events, including three fund-raisers, three candidate forums, seven church services and a parade.

In a recent interview, Judge McAfee, 34, said that campaigning was “delaying every aspect” of his job.

Jurist: Appeals court upholds Trump gag order in New York hush money trial

The New York Supreme Court’s Appellate Division upheld a gag order Tuesday against former president Donald Trump in a criminal case centering on allegations he falsified the Trump Organization’s business records to conceal hush money payments to influence the 2016 presidential election. The appeals court was unpersuaded by Trump’s arguments that the gag order violates his First Amendment right to free speech.

New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan entered the gag order against Trump in late March, preventing the defendant from disparaging potential witnesses, prosecutors (other than Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg), and potential jurors in his trial. Merchan expanded the gag order in April after Trump attacked the justice’s daughter, who is a Democratic political consultant. Trump has twice been held in contempt for violating the order, leading Merchan to threaten the defendant with jail time.

In its ruling, the appeals court held that Merchan properly balanced Trump’s right to free speech with the need to protect participants in the trial. Citing a federal court’s previous refusal to overturn a separate gag order in Trump’s election interference case, the New York court reasoned that “courts have a duty to shield witnesses from influences that could affect their testimony and undermine the integrity of the trial process” as well as a duty to protect court staff. Applying this principle, the appeals court held that “Justice Merchan properly determined that petitioner’s public statements posed a significant threat to the integrity of the testimony of witnesses and potential witnesses in this case[.]”

Merchan most recently threatened the former president with incarceration last week over an April interview answer which the justice ruled impugned the jury and therefore violated the gag order.
