Jon Stewart video below

First talks about Musk. Musk says he'll appear on show, and then Musk says Jon Stewart is too partisan.

Yes, from the man who supports a far-right German party, gave nearly $300 million to Trump's campaign, and had a custom MAGA hat made which he regularly wears in the White house, accusing Jon of being too partisan.

I guess when Elon Musk challenged Mark Zuckerberg in a 'cage match', Zuckerberg must have been too partisan also. See. Elon Musk won’t fight Mark Zuckerberg in a ‘cage match’ – because he knows he’d lose

Anyhow then Jon talks extensively about the new world order, starting at the 5 minute mark

Probably how a good portion of the country feels right now:

James shows off his people skills to the entire world:

(FYI, Zelensky has thanked the US for its help on more than one occasion).

And the tariff wars begin...

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/543754/china-canada-retaliate-in-dumb-trump-tariff-war

🙄

I hope Trudeau does not back down at all. Ditto Mexico and China. The orange buffoon thinks he can push anyone around, I hope he gets a very short sharp lesson at the midterms next year.

thermonuclear:

It has to be viewed as positive that Europe are going to step it up in aid of Ukraine as well as their own defense.

It shouldn't be forgotten that the reliance of Europe (and many of the rest of us frankly) on the US for security that Trump now bemoans has been actively encouraged for decades by the US to benefit themselves and their industrial-military complex in no small part.

At the moment, though, that discussion is about Europe helping to keep the peace. There isn't any peace yet, and Putin has no incentive for there to be any as he thinks he is winning. As long as nothing changes, he's right. He will win - at a terrible cost in Russian lives, but he doesn't care about that. Russia will grind Ukraine down eventually. Putin has way more warm bodies.

If Europe is serious about peace, Europe has to bite the bullet - pun intended - and step in to fight with Ukraine to push Russia out. Only then can they be a peacekeeping force.

And I know it's easy for someone who definitely isn't going to be sent to the frontline to say that, but I don't see any other realistic option. Freezing the conflict where it is leaves millions of Ukrainians under the Russian thumb.

With the "pause" on US aid to Ukraine, Trump has essentially signed a death knell for Ukraine, and given Putin free reign to do as he pleases.

Starmer pretty much stated that, which is a good sign. "Get feet on the ground and planes in the air"

Trump to address a joint session of Congress at 3pm our time. Have your popcorn at the ready, this should be more fantastical than anything the Brothers Grimm could ever have dreamed up.

He's gonna announce his money making minerals deal, signing today apparently

He's gonna announce that his coercion of Mexico/Canada struck a deal so they are off the hook, that's in progress I think

He's gonna announce that Zelensky caved, also under coercion tactics

Not unlike his business practices

If the US and Ukraine have indeed signed the minerals deal then it can only be because Trump has got off his high horse from last Friday and the "cave", as it were, has been his. He wanted to trumpet his apparently awesome deal-making skills and it was him that had most to lose by turning up to Congress empty handed in this respect.

No apology from Zelensky that I have seen in the media. Well played Ukraine, well played Europe. The first of many climb downs in Trump's future I would hope.

Hitler would be proud.

Before today, no congressmen has ever been escorted out of a presidential speech

Only once before has someone been escorted out. In 2006, an anti-war protester was removed from the gallery before President George W. Bush's State of the Union speech.

A guest shouted at President Obama during a speech, but wasn't removed. Representative Joe Wilson shouted "You lie!" at President Obama during a joint session, but again was not escorted out.

Funny how the only time people have been removed has been by Republicans.

Texas Representative Al Green interrupts President Trump's joint address of Congress, escorted out

I'm ignoring the extremely immature parts from Trump's speak, and only mention the very immature remaining portions.

Little Jack Horner
Sat in the corner,
Eating a Christmas pie;
He put in his thumb,
And pulled out a plum,
And said, "What a good boy am I!"

Key takeaways from Trump's address to joint session of Congress: The Guardian
...
Trump praised the work of his billionaire adviser, Elon Musk, who has led his administration’s efforts to dramatically downsize the federal government through his so-called “department of government efficiency”. He warned that workers who resisted his administration’s policies would be fired.

Trump said the US would take “historic action to dramatically expand production of critical minerals and rare earths” and said he was working “tirelessly” to end the “savage conflict in Ukraine”. He read from a letter from Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy he received earlier in the day, which said Kyiv is “ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer”.

Trump vowed a tit-for-tat retaliation hours after he launched a trade war against three of the US’s top trading partners: Mexico, Canada and China. “Whatever they tariff us, we tariff them,” he said, adding a caveat that “there’ll be a little disturbance … it won’t be much”.

Trump said his administration was in the process of “reclaiming the Panama Canal” and repeated his threat to take control of Greenland: “One way or the other, we’re going to get it.” He pledged to put an American flag on the planet Mars.

House speaker Mike Johnson ordered Texas representative Al Green, a vocal advocate for civil rights and presidential accountability, removed from the House chamber after the congressman repeatedly interrupted Trump’s address, shouting: “He has no mandate.” Other Democrats protested Trump’s speech by holding up signs or walking out of the chamber.

Regarding tit-for-tat tariffs against Canada, the US will be feeling it in a month, literally the next time millions of Americans get their next power bill.

Canada has historically been a significant supplier of electricity to the United States. In 2022, the U.S. imported approximately 42 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity from Canada.

Some of the states most reliant on Canadian electricity include New York, Maine, Vermont, and Minnesota.

The average American household uses about 10,000 kWh of electricity per year.

If you divide 42 TWh by the average household consumption, that means Canadian electricity exports could supply power to about 4.2 million U.S. households annually.

The value of Canadian electricity exports to the U.S. was US $3.2 billion in 2023.

Ontario will cut off U.S. electricity exports 'with a smile on my face,' Ford says: Toronto Sun
...
Ontario Premier Doug Ford doubled down on threats to cut electricity exports to U.S. border states if the tariffs go through.

“If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do everything — including cut off their energy with a smile on my face,” Ford told reporters.

“They rely on our energy, they need to feel the pain. They want to come at us hard, we’re going to come back twice as hard.”
