Ebrahim Rasool, South Africa's Ambassador to the United States, has had his diplomatic tenure marked by direct interactions with Elon Musk.

Upon his appointment in late 2024, Rasool viewed Musk's involvement as a potential bridge for South Africa-U.S. relations. He perceived Musk's South African heritage as an opportunity to foster "transactional" engagements. (Trump loves transactional" engagements more than his children)

...But that all sored when Rasool accused President Trump of promoting global white supremacy, citing Musk's influence in the administration as a contributing factor.

This led U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to declare Rasool "persona non grata," effectively expelling him from the United States.

Ebrahim Rasool was born Cape Town to a Muslim family of mixed English-Javanese-Dutch-Indian heritage.

It appears Ebrahim Rasool diidn't hate America. It appears he actually wanted to do more business with America, and initially believe Musk would be a good connection.

It appeared that changed with Musk's Nazi salute and when Musk said “Starlink is not allowed to operate in South Africa, because I’m not black.”

In return, Rasool has criticized Trump and his allies for promoting white supremacy not just at home but around the world, citing Musk and Vice President JD Vance’s support of U.K. reform politician Nigel Farage and the far-right Alternative for Germany party.

He is not alone. Musk is part of the “PayPal mafia” of libertarian billionaires with roots in South Africa under white rule now hugely influential in the US tech industry and politics.

They include Peter Thiel, the German-born billionaire venture capitalist and PayPal cofounder, who was educated in a southern African city in the 1970s where Hitler was still openly venerated. Thiel, a major donor to Trump’s campaign, has been critical of welfare programs and women being permitted to vote as undermining capitalism. Scarcely more than 50 days into his second presidential term, hapless Trump provides daily proofs of Merton’s universal “law of unintended consequences”.*

Rooted in ignorance, error, wilful blindness and self-defeating prediction, Trump’s rash actions produce contradictory, harmful and often opposite results to those he says he wants. ...

* Unintended Consequences

The Law of Unintended Consequences states that almost all human actions have at least one unintended consequence. In other words, each cause has more than one effect, including unforeseen effects.

Merton listed five causes of unanticipated consequences:

Ignorance: It is impossible to anticipate everything.
Error: Incomplete analysis of the problem, or following habits that worked in the past but may not apply to the current situation.
Immediate interest: It may override long-term interests.
Basic values: They may require or prohibit certain actions, even if the long-term result might be unfavorable. These long-term consequences may eventually cause changes in basic values.
Self-defeating prophecy: Fear of some consequence drives people to find solutions before the problem occurs, thus the non-occurrence of the problem is unanticipated.

Donald qualifies on all 5 counts. 🙄
