The Guardian - Mehmet Oz confirmed by US Senate to lead Medicare and Medicaid

breaking

TV pitchman Dr Mehmet Oz was confirmed on Thursday to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Oz became the agency’s administrator in a party-line 53-45 vote.

The 64-year-old will manage health insurance programs for roughly half the country, with oversight of Medicare, Medicaid and Affordable Care Act coverage.

He steps into the new role as Congress is debating cuts to the Medicaid program, which provides coverage to millions of poor and disabled Americans.

Dr Oz:

For COVID-19, he promoted hydroxychloroquine as a treatment despite lacking evidence. He suggested reopening schools, claiming it might only increase mortality by 2-3%

Green Coffee Bean Extract (2012-2014) promoted as a "miracle" weight loss supplement. However, studies later found no substantial evidence for its effectiveness. In 2014, the manufacturer was fined $3.5 million by the FTC for false advertising.

He claimed Raspberry Ketones could help with weight loss, but there was little to no clinical evidence supporting this.

Garcinia Cambogia was another weight loss supplement Oz hyped, which later showed limited evidence of effectiveness.

Researchers found that around half of the products Oz recommended lacked scientific support.

In 2014, Oz was called before the U.S. Senate's Consumer Protection panel for misleading claims about weight loss products. Senator Claire McCaskill criticized him for promoting "miracle" cures without evidence. Oz admitted that some of his language was "flowery" but defended his intent to give people hope.

In 2011, he claimed apple juice contained harmful arsenic levels, leading to backlash from the FDA and other experts.

His non-profit HealthCorps received funding from supplement companies.

The scary thing is how many Americans have dangerously poor judgement.
They essentially got what they wanted.

Unfortunately it seems majority of Americans are very Cargo Cultish.
Don't laugh at islanders who saw the endless resources as war moved across the Pacific.
There is a techno version in modern world.

Tell Americans people in another State, or Country will pay for their F150 in the driveway and they will believe it.
Florida a Porsche, Lamborghini, Bentley, Aston Martin, Mercedes-Benz, or Pagani paid by productivity somewhere else, that now has to pay additional for the tariff.
Maybe that supply of Ketamine, and E as well to fuel your success.

Trump is on a winner with his 'Those guys are eating our lunch' speech.
Its what Americans want to hear.
Give them someone/thing to hate as Mr H and Mr G .

Elon Musk and Thiel would say, kill your empathy it holds you back.
Oh Elon wanted Star Trek, but this would be a doomed dystopian planet in original series.

The American dream is the dream of a dream, believe what you want.
Leaving the tab for someone else to pick up, live without empathy, paying off the credit card with another credit card.

This I think is part of why Harris lost - to his credit, the orange buffoon (very effectively) said before the electionthat he would lower prices, end the Ukraine war "in 24 hours", close the borders and make the US safer and blah blah blah.

She did similar things too, but he was louder and probably a more convincing salesman.

Unfortunately, whether a portion of Americans either didn't like voting for a woman (moreso a woman of colour) or they were just voting with their wallets, that I think is why he won.

Of course, as soon as he won he started saying it was "very hard" to reduce prices and the Ukraine War was a lot more complicated than he had previously stated.

However, for most voters they have basically been sucked in by a snake oil salesman and are now finding out the hard way (especially with Musk's DOGE thing) that he can't or won't or doesn't want to do the things they voted him in on. It's a bit late for buyer's remorse, they're basically stuck with this crap on a daily basis for at least the next 4 years now.

As awful as this sounds, Americans made their bed and now they can lie in it. It will be even worse if he tries to run for a third term - there are very few Republicans left who would stand up to him saying or doing such a thing now, it's the party of Trump, sadly (depressingly might be a better word).

A large organisation I do occasional work for has just issued a travel advisory for the US.  It's at about the same level as for China in terms of sanitising social media posts and carrying wiped electronic devices, which previously was the worst-case one.  Russia (pre-2022) in contrast was pretty minimal.

Luckily my boy isn't travelling until September, so that gives us a bit of time to get things ready.

I'm still astonished to think that this sort of nonsense even needs to be done in the first place in 2025 🙄

He's not LGBTQ+ is he?  There was... quite a bit of text covering that, with a worrying "could get worse in the future" attached to some of it.

"Here comes Peter Cottontail,
Hopping' down the bunny trail,
Look at him stop, and listen to him say:
"Try to do the things you should."
Maybe if you're extra good,
He'll roll lots of Easter eggs potatoes and onions your way."

Easter Eggs Are So Expensive Americans Are Dyeing Potatoes: New York Times
...
Chicken eggs, the stars of Easter baskets and Easter egg hunts and rolls across the country, are going to cost more than in years past. Even as egg prices are dropping nationwide the anxiety about the cost persists, and many consumers are getting creative at finding substitutes. Videos on how to dye marshmallows, potatoes and even onions have begun to circulate on social media and news websites.

As long as they only have to be inventive for Easter eggs (and all the calories and plastic waste that entails), it's okay. I'm just afraid that it won't stop at Easter eggs in the future.
