I believe that the bottom line is, when he goes to enact these tariffs he will be told to stop by people smarter than him who understand these things better, or (if he ignores them) he will do it, it will fail and he will pull back somewhat.

I guess the third option is he does it, and it works, and everyone gets egg on their face. Somewhat unlikely, but so is him running, becoming popular, getting the nomination, being elected, surviving inauguration and becoming President.

I don't share your optimism. I don't believe The Trump believes that there are people cleverer than him, and anyway, as POTUS he can do what he likes with punitive tariffs etc without advice.

Cotton was actually a great example, US massively subsidises production, and as a consequence is the world's largest exporter of raw cotton (29% of global export trade) and accused of depressing world prices by way of subsidised export. Gotta keep lobbyists from ex-slaving states happy eh? That - and maintain a corrupt electoral college system to appease them.

Yes - that isn't The Trump's fault, but the effect of that subsidised export does impoverish cotton producers in other nations.

One would hope that if Trump "punishes" other nations who can (without massive subsidy) export tee-shirts at lower cost than US producers can, then importers of cotton could punish the USA.

That won't happen of course.

Yep.Making America Great Again and its only about America as I think he said today is great. But when you trade you negotiate, he can't expect deals to be USfavured and bad for the other party, they will go elsewhere. But yes, like all of his promises, the advisors will advise. Short term, some or many countries may have to take the "deal" then they will seek solutions elsewhere, that when the brown stuff will hit the fan

US foreign policy disasters from the best part of 70 years have been motivated by attempts at protection of US interests globally. When it's suited them, they've been quite happy to support murderous despots and overthrow democratically elected leaders who don't kowtow to US interests.

The Trump's arguments that from now on it's "only about America" seems very dangerous to me.

It's not policy shift/reversal - it's intensification of what they've already done.

I think he knows there are people smarter than him. Whether he admits that publically or not right now, probably not. The thing is, the POTUS is not an island, he cannot, nor will he, run it on his own.

He might do a few rash things, they might not go well, but I don't think the man is stupid, he has not run his companies alone (Yes I am aware of his failed businesses as well). He is prepared to trust others, no-one gets to his position without listening to others at least a little.

I think he believes great risk, great reward. It's not a position the US has traditionally taken, he may try a few, but in the end, I think these one-sided deals he is talking about, will be less so than he thinks or wants.

I expect at the beginning of his term, he will be banging on the desk insisting on a particular outcome. I'll be pretty surprised if it continues for too long. He will initially want to stamp his mark on things to show he means business.

Where the US is in 18 months will be more interesting than what is happening there in the next 9.

The world has been turning despite some very bad people, for thousands of years, I don't really see it coming off it's axis just yet.

What I do predict, is the dismissal of some of his key advisors in the coming little while. I don't think his cabinet will be to his liking in the end. I suspect once a few deals and things go badly, he will be forced to get more experienced people in.

Again, I think you're being wildly optimistic that the damage he will inflict can be contained, and incredibly apologetic for what a pathetic excuse for a man he is.

A candidate exposed endorsing sexual assault against women, then later being elected POTUS is an abomination.

A POTUS has spoken at his inauguration, effectively claiming to represent "the people" whilst making it very clear for a long time that "people" with a dissenting voice are the enemy. There was no call for unity or conciliation either within the US, or any pledge to work for global security.

If your posts here are a true indicator of your feelings regarding the US I think you need to start redirecting your attention. You seem to have an unhealthy obsession with Mr Trump and that never goes well.
