Some comedy to lighten the tone:

“He is off to a fast start. His Cabinet consists of smart, experienced and successful individuals. He already has taken steps to keep jobs in America, put unnecessary regulations on hold, and improve health care. Consumer confidence is at a 16-year-high,” Smith said.

"No, the national liberal media won’t print that or air it or post it. Better to get your news directly from the president. In fact, it might be the only way to get the unvarnished truth,” he concluded.

From Breitbart?

No - from House Science Committee Chairman Lamar Smith.

And BTW, consumer confidence wasn't at a 16 year high when he said that - it's dropped slightly in Jan '17 - and came in lower than market forecasts.  Should have asked the President?

Fred, thanks for the Pruitt vs Sanders post, I hadn't read that. Ditto Blakamin, I hadn't read the NYT version. The only thing better than a buffalo would have been a bull. Well done, Park Service!

I posted a link a couple of pages ago which was a feature written by a Russian journalist about tactics (apart from simply killing people) used by Putin to create diversions and distract the media away from what he was actually doing.
In my opinion, Trump is behaving as described.  Another example from one of his tweets this morning:

As well as revisiting an issue that's been well covered, he's thrown in an "easter egg".  The date on the photo is wrong, 21st Jan was the date of the women's march - the inauguration was on the 20th.  As if he didn't know...

Social media loves this stuff - but IMO it's a diversion - he is deliberately trolling the media - including social media.
Meanwhile he is deliberately and quickly unwinding several decades of progress in the USA.

I would love to see the EPA gutted like a fish.  Their regulations have caused outboard engines to become complicated and consequently expensive and unreliable.

Whats wrong with the Dakota pipeline, I see he has done an order for that. The map I saw has it bypassing the reservations. It will create jobs, get trucks off the roads to allow them to transport more goods, but there still seems to be an issue with the tribes

I believe that a main issue is that "in case of spill" the original route of the pipeline was deliberately diverted to avoid being upstream of the municipal water supply, wetlands, and residential subdivisions housing mainly white middle-class folks, and re-routed so that instead it was 1/2 mile upstream from a Sioux reservation and their water supply etc. Yes - it "bypassed" the reservation.

Ok. In this day and age, it seems a trifle bizarre that we cannot manage that issue. We have rovers pottering around Mars, landed on the moon almost 50 years ago, landed a device on a comet.....but we can't buld a pipeline without contaminating water supplies

I'd "love" to modify my log-burning fire to undo design features which keep emissions down to levels which have been deemed to be acceptable.
But I won't do that - because I like and care about my neighbours.

The log fire I had was clean air approved, and it does keep emissions down, as in you cannot keep it smouldering overnight which is smokey

Your saying that your clean air approved logfire is smokey because of the clean air design?

I don't understand the full issues involved, but a serious political tactical mistake was made, against a background where property rights for the affected Sioux tribe had been routinely walked all over.  They would have probably just walked all over the Sioux protesters, but it got enough publicity so that support came from unexpected quarters, thousands of US war veterans etc.

A (partly) separate issue is the total cost in CO2 emissions from production of shale oil, where a considerable additional quantity of CO2 is used in extraction/cracking to produce the oil. Thus it has a considerably lower (half?) EROEI than conventional crude oil extraction.  IOW, it's producing much more greenhouse gas per barrel than crude oil.

Not that this matters of course - as according to Trump, climate change is a myth or a plot made up by the Chinese to undermine the USA.

No - the reverse.  It would be convenient (but "dirty") to modify the burner so that it could be "choked off" to smoulder all night.

The emissions (particulate in g/kg fuel) of the new burner are less than 1/10 those of the old burner it replaced.

My wife and I have a very good friend who's a PhD physicist, gay/married, who works as a senior environmental scientist for EPA in DC.
He's still sane, but I expect living with the same hope you express.

I had hopes of writing out some long, insightful response but all I can do is sigh. With the latest news coming out of the US today, I'll be surprised if there's going to be enough tomorrows for history to judge this mess for what it truly is. *sigh*
