Clearly that's a debate that could go on for hours and already has. No parting shots on wood burners. Create another thread for that.

I hope that wasn't directed at me, it was originally on topic - but drifted off - hence my comment: "Sorry - this is a little off-topic" which I'd hoped as a hint may have got the message across and rendered your comment unnecessary.

Trump is going to be a global environmental vandal.  Unfortunately it looks like the good work being done on environmental research by US taxpayer funded agencies is going to be gutted.  As the #1 global polluter, the USA should be shamed if that happens.

On the bucket list is to do the same to Trump's wall - if he ever builds it.

Just as well you have your face hidden Fred. All your posts will get you a place on Trumpy's hit list. tongue-out

Yeah - LOL.

I'm rather gobsmacked by Peter Dunne's "Open Letter to Mr President":

Apart from being oh so wordy (when a few telling Trump what he is can be accomplished in a few well-chosen words), it's so futile.  I doubt it'll go down in history like Ghandi's letter to Hitler (which commences with "dear friend" and finishes with a request for forgiveness) - but Trump's a few years (and probably many brain cells) short of commanding international respect as a tyrant.

Cheaper Mexican workers = more profit for whoever scores the contract from Herr Trump.

Mexican workers in Mexico will probably end up paying for construction of the wall indirectly by imposition of a border tax (punitive tariff) on imports of Mexican products.

Trump's said that he'll get Mexico to pay - one way or another - and that's an easy way to force them.

Mexico's largest source of cash comes from Mexicans living in the United States.

Trump has threatened to halt or tax cash transfers - known as remittances - from the U.S. to Mexico.

Mexico's biggest cash cow is under threat from President Donald Trump

Another one of Trump's tweets:

And another foot in mouth outbreak:

It's reported that Steve Bannon is registered to vote in two states, and it appears that Tiffany Trump may be too.

"Lock them up!!!!"

That would be tantamount to theft. He wouldn't do that.... oh wait...

I had a quick read last night, but still aren't entirely clear.

Can Trump order pretty much anything he wants with an executive order, and then it's up others to challenge whether the order is constitutional through the courts?

While I don't disagree with Mr Dunnes' letter I do not believe a Cabinet Minister should do this when it is not his/her portfolio. Mr English should dump him from Cabinet.

It seems to me he just did it as an attempt to win public support for himself and his party here. "Look how brave he is, let's vote for him and his party".

I tend to agree - now is not the time to be launching in to Trump with what could be (mis)interpreted as "official" statements from representatives of NZ Govt.

There will be plenty of opportunities for NZ to "step up" against Trump at the UN and other global forums.  Care is needed.

Care is also needed to avoid stirring up the alt:right within NZ.  There's plenty of support being expressed for Trump in other forums in NZ.  I read some of the comments and shudder. "Mainstream NZ" needs to wake up to this.

I think DarthKermit meant Trump's Tweet list.

Don't worry Trump only reads tweets. Open letter is a big word and is full of scary definitions and will only confuse people.

The wiki page gives a good outline, and examples of how it's been used (and misused)

I doubt that there are many who'd argue that use of executive order to desegregate public schools was "misuse".

He watches an awful lot of TV.  (Not hard to guess which channels).

That's led to speculation that the US public effectively elected a TV set to POTUS.
