Behind the scenes I'd bet that the tweet caused mild panic.  5 hours later - after the tweet had been deleted, he tweeted the following.  As "damage control" from an action that couldn't be undone, that's not bad work - his spin merchants and co-liars should be congratulated:

Hark back to the campaign trail. He's good with words. He knows the best words... It's not his fault of the rest of the world can't keep up :-)

In respect of the Paris Accord, he's saying he's open to negotiating a "fairer" deal for the USA. I think the rest of the world needs to slap massive taxes on US products.

An option. Then we would have them applying trade taxes left right and centre, it would be a mess. Every country needs to officially denounce the decision, then work heavily together to replace US imports, to those from other countries as and when this is possible.

My money is on that. He is in a heavily biased position, but I also feel he has a lot of philanthropic mindset as well.

I'm sure Elon Musk had nothing to lose by Americans being able to burn more fossil fuels :-/

Interestingly CNN reports that the US can't actually even send the letter notifying they will pull out till 2019 and can't actually confirm pulling out till November 2020 - so Trump can't actually do anything unless he is reelected

Yeah... the whole point of the Paris Accord was that everyone manages their climate effect internally. If the US is going to damage our climate, then they need to pay for it. But, like Trump's proposed Mexican wall tariff, this isn't going to make them pay for it.

I would also like to see exactly why the current agreement is (perceived as) unfair to the USA.

Elon Musk is rich enough already. He can do precisely as he pleases with no adverse effect on his personal comfort....

Principles are easy to observe when in that position.

Musk also has a financial  motive for the US staying in . Impose more tax on carbon produces is good for his electric battery and EV industry.

He claims it's a breach of US sovereignty.

The real reason is that he's done it because he can, because he's very stupid, and acted at the behest of an administration and lobbyists who'll line their own pockets with dirty money.

So, is the membership in the Paris accord something that the President can decide unilaterally?

Paul1977:

It seems pretty clear that he started to type "coverage" when he was distracted by a squirrel and hastily dropped his phone to go and chase it.

I really wish he would go and chase squirrels:

  1. He could replace the current ginger cat on his head with a squirrel - would look more natural
  2. Always a possibility a car could get him
  3. He would be less dangerous to the world

His followers will be really proud of him though - the more stupid he is the more staunch they think he is - I can hear it now "USA USA USA!"

A true mark of real stupidity is the inability to recognise it. Most dim-witted people know they are dim-witted and simply accept it. Only a complete imbecile is so dumb that he thinks he is bright.
