MikeB4:

As this year progresses the more I believe NZ should be reviewing our ties with the US. A few years ago the US suspended ANZUS due to our anti-nuclear stand, I feel NZ should consider suspending ANZUS again, we do not want to get dragged into this mad mans Wars and general lunacy. We should also consider expelling the US Ambassador following his insults.

What insults?  (All I know is that the Ambassador is extremely pro-Trump)

His BS that New Zealanders do not understand the risks of a nuclear blast over the Pacific. Yeah we don't know about the British tests in Australia. the US tests at Bikini Atoll and the French test at Mururoa.

"One thing" that would defuse the situation would be if Trump resigned.

A "f&*^ing moron" POTUS threatening war on Twitter won't solve anything.

Trump will never resign - his huge ego wouldn't let him lose face when he is at the height of his real or imagined power.  undecided

ANZUS is alive and well, just that NZ is not in it. NZ lost billions of dollars in trade due to this. What did being anti nuclear achieve.....a big fat nothing.

I seem to recall a massive rise in Kiwi pride, regardless of peoples political leanings at that time. It was like sticking your finger up to Big Brother. Little old NZ being pushed around by big Old US of A. We were not going to take it. And we didn't.

That really helped push up wages and job growth....NOT

Its all about balance. I also dont like the new US Ambassador much....but I like Trump even less. Thats no reason to sever ties etcetc. We need to be better than them.

Our attitude towards Australia is an example of that. We are ignoring their pathetic attempts to demorialise us (eg Julia Bishop), but by ignoring it we prove we are much better.

Considering the events going on over that period (The end of Muldoonism, the free-market reforms, the excessive exuberance in NZ's equity markets and spectacular crash etc) I'd be surprised if there was any economic impact from NZ's anti-nuclear stance - visible over that background noise / turmoil.

It kept and keeps that nuclear crap out of NZ and prevents us getting involved with nuclear weapons. We made a stand against the nuclear stupidity.

If only we could create a fallout barrier over Godzone, and become The Land Of The Big White Umbrella.

Maybe Winstone can organize it.

I don't believe that to be the case...time will tell.

Another example could be that if NZ was totally greenhouse gas free ie no cows at all etcetc....it wouldnt make one little bit of difference to the global scene. NZers may well feel proud and poor as the world laughs at us.

Lets not be arrogant enough to be world leaders at a huge cost to a lot of NZers. Lets get the balance correct so we can at least sustain the current way of life, or do we want the poor to get poorer etc?

I doubt if Kim even knows where NZ is. But he is going to launch more nukes..fact.

@Pumpedd how has our nuclear free policy affected our way of life or prosperity, and how does maintaining it make the poor poorer?
