gzt: It seems the NFL thing is heating up. The previously supportive owner of the cowboys who kneeled with players has changed his tune, or maybe he saw it as a one day promo, but it appears he will now suspend players, and the NFL may do the same. The pressure applied by Trump and Pence is having an effect. Remains to be seen what the players aka employees will do, or not do.

Apparently 70% of the players are black. So if they all stood together in solidarity, it would be interesting to see what would happen.

I suspect that the NFL would dig their heels in, suspend or fire all that participate, and offer a second rate product. All so they can mute the uncomfortable race inequality discussion that this protest is attempting to initiate.

All from a president who continuously claims he's trying to unite a broken country. I suspect the USA will be cleaning up the effects of the divisiveness of this administration for decades after Trump leaves office.

Apparently he thought it would be a one and done kind of a deal which would make him look good. He even made sure that the camera's saw him in solidarity with the players. Now that he has done it once he thinks it should be over.

Interestingly Trump was involved with a failed competitor to the NFL a few years back and has held a grudge against them since. This controversy might be a way for him to attack the league because he is petty.

Here is a man who doesn't understand the protections granted by their Constitution to free speech and free press.

Trying to control both or each is expressly against their Constitution.

He is nothing more than a dumb authoritarian plutocrat.

It's obvious that Trump is a very screwed-up guy who would be unable to function normally in society without his money.

I mean, imagine him applying for a job.

But, as time goes on, I think he's beginning to realize that he can appear to be even nuttier than he actually is, and make the craziest statements with total immunity.

It'd be fascinating to hear the pillow talk between Trump and his teddy.

It is entertaining to highlight Trump's obvious deficiencies, but in truth I find all of this profoundly depressing. Even if the world manages to avoid an actual nuclear war, things will never be the same again, or even close. I see everything I value in a civilised society being extinguished. I wonder if this was how thinking people in Germany felt in 1932.

You are being rather negative. I trust people, and I am sure in the medium to long term things will smooth out. The world deals with tyrants in a slow but measured way. After-all we had Muldoon and survived. I believe people learn from the error of their ways, but history never forgets. Take Japan as an example and even Germany.

In terms of the world Trump is only here for a very short time, and I trust that lots of powerful people are plotting now to see that he doesnt stay President for too long. There will be dozens of forum threads like this one in America as well. Also remember the media these days seems to only report opinion and facts can be scarce.

You are discounting a few points here.

Trump is in charge of the nuclear football. And has in the past mused about why they don't use nukes.

Trump is expressing frustration at the North Korea situation, and has made it clear that his preferred course of action is a military one.

Trump is easily enraged. And when done so, he lashes out with fire and fury.

It's being reported that Trump is feeling increasingly isolated, and is in a pretty dark place right now.

The last time Trump bombed a country (with the Mother Of All Bombs), political pundits across the spectrum declared how 'Presidential' this made him.

Trump's sole raison d'être is to be told how wonderful he is.

While it is comforting to think that there are checks and balances in place that would stop Trump from launching a nuclear attack, it's my understanding that if the President wants to push the big red button, the President can.

The only one of these points that relies on media reporting (as opposed to witnessing Trump's words and actions) is the one about his current headspace. Add all these up, and we have a situation that could escalate rapidly, and with significant consequences for the world.
