freitasm: It is my personal opinion Donald Trump is a liar and a crook.

Yes - and he thinks he can pardon himself.

Not in New York...

Maybe he can't pardon himself but he can pardon his family and everyone else involved in his rottenness. How can you have rule of law when the one on top of the dungheap behaves like a mafioso?

Edit: And half the country cheers him on for it?

1. Everyone is equal, but some are more equal that others

2. Wasn't it a quarter? He got half the vote and half the populous voted

If this NK thing comes off, and it has BUGGER ALL to do with him or his party, that will be a problem. Unless he irks them so NK deals with normal countries instead to get what they want, thats a real possibility

Actually he can pardon his family and friends (or anybody else) for any federal convictions, he and a few others (Giuliani) seem to think that he could pardon himself - but obviously that would create a situation where a POTUS could do anything at all with full immunity by way of pardoning himself - which would present a constitutional crisis.

But he can't pardon convictions by individual states.

There is a complication - if they're tried and convicted under federal law, then they can't be tried by NY state for the same crimes, this a NY state "double-jeopardy" law - not federal law.  The intent of this was never to allow for the extraordinary circumstances where a rogue POTUS would consider pardoning himself or his cronies, then that would block prosecution by a state for crimes committed against that state.

The (now disgraced) former AG of NY, Schneiderman was trying to get that state law changed.  The disclosures / allegations that led to his resignation coincide with his moves to change the NY double jeopardy laws.  This was a serious problem to Trump that he perhaps thought had disappeared along with the very convenient disappearance of Schneiderman.

But apparently it hasn't.

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/06/why-giuliani-said-trump-could-literally-get-away-with-murder.html

"Giuliani’s New Tactic: Arguing Trump Can Literally Get Away With Murder"

The New York Times obtained a 20-page letter Trump’s attorneys sent Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team in January, arguing that he could not have obstructed justice because he has total, unfettered authority over the Justice Department. Trump could “terminate the inquiry or even exercise his power to pardon if so desired,” they claim.

On Sunday Rudy Giuliani — who replaced John Dowd, one the attorneys who penned the letter — went on TV to elaborate on this expansive view of executive power. As usual, Giuliani gave a freewheeling performance that generally made his client sound guilty. He tried to distance himself from the arguments laid out in the letter, telling This Week that his predecessor put forth “the broadest possible point,” but “we don’t have to go there” because there are less constitutionally questionable ways of proving Trump’s actions were justified.

When pushed, however, Giuliani said he generally agrees that the president has stunningly broad powers — even if using them would be political suicide. He said that while he believes the courts would conclude the president has the right to pardon himself, it’s “unthinkable” as it would lead to “immediate impeachment.”

When George Stephanopoulos asked if the president could shut down an FBI investigation into whether he’d accepted a bribe or committed murder, Giuliani replied … “In no case can he be subpoenaed or indicted,” Giuliani told HuffPost Sunday night. “I don’t know how you can indict while he’s in office. No matter what it is.”

Echoing Trump’s claim during the campaign that he could shoot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue and not lose any voters, Giuliani explained that if there’s a criminal in the Oval Office, the law can’t touch him until the Legislative branch acts.

Gotta stop these leaks - why some of them might damage the POTUS.  There's no way he would have taken $100k from his non-profit foundation to settle a personal...

Anyway, if it happened - which it didn't - he didn't know about it...

Oh wait:

BBC: Trump will impose 25% tarrifs on US$50b of China sourced imports on July 6

This is expected to cause higher costs and some redundancies for USA enterprises. Expect Trump to blame China for all that. China says it will impose similar tax on a similar value of USA sourced imports at the same date. More problems.

It appears that Trump's objective is the removal of Chinese laws that require American companies investing in China to a) have a local partner owning 50% of the enterprise and b) transfer relevant intellectual property to the enterprise. China removes those laws, Trump removes the tarrifs.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=12027351

"Liam Dann: US can't win a trade war - but it can hurt NZ"

"...Most of the direct pain would fall on consumers in the US and China.

That brings us back to the war of attrition.

If the American consumer is expected to bear the brunt of that alone then I don't like Trump's chances.

If the rest of the world – Europe, Japan, the UK, Canada and Australia - fell into line behind the US then it might be a fair fight.

But there is no sign of that happening. In fact, Trump has antagonised America's other major trading partners to the point of making enemies of them too.

That leaves China with plenty of alternative markets and leeway to push back hard against the US.

The deeper risk for New Zealand – one highlighted by local trade commentators like the International Business Forum's Stephen Jacobi – is that this all ends up undermining the authority of the World Trade Organisation.

As it stands, China is taking the US to the WTO over the latest tariffs. What happens if it wins its case but America ignores the ruling?

At that point, the formal structure of global free trade will break down and it really could become every nation for itself.

That's a scenario that a tiny nation like New Zealand, with its whole economy reliant on exports and having almost no political clout, just can't afford.

It's also another reason to be thankful for the free trade deals we already have in place - including the CTPP - and to crack on with proposed deals in regions like Europe."

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=12020958

"Market Watch: How trade wars will affect your savings"

"...Meanwhile, China continues to retain a pro-globalisation outlook and has moved to cut tariffs on hundreds of consumer goods in the past few months.

[Bloomberg's Tyler Cowen] said 'New Zealand has a strong relationship with China now. That China relationship is more important to us, export wise, than the US.'"

Donald Trump uses children for political reasons.

Donald Trump on Kin Jon Un: "He’s the head of a country, and I mean he’s the strong head. Don’t let anyone think anything different. He speaks and his people sit up at attention. I want my people to do the same."

Donald Trump, again using the "I didn't know this guy, never heard of him" tactics:

Manafort has nothing to do with our campaign. … I feel a little badly about it. They went back 12 years to get things that he did 12 years ago?

“You know, Paul Manafort worked for me for a very short period of time. He worked for Ronald Reagan. He worked for Bob Dole. He worked for John McCain, or his firm did. He worked for many other Republicans. He worked for me, what, for 49 days or something? A very short period of time.”

Trump praises Kim on Fox & Friends: 'I want my people to do the same'

In a Friday morning interview on the White House lawn with Fox & Friends, Trump risked provoking critics when he said the North Korean dictator was “the strong head” of his country.

“He’s the head of a country, he’s the strong head, don’t let anyone think anything different. He speaks and his people sit up at attention. I want my people to do the same.”

He later told a reporter he had been “kidding”. The reporter didn’t “understand sarcasm”, he said.  frown

Interesting thought.

Or was it just nothing more than stupid click-bait / sarcasm to get a bite from a MSM that is more than a little bit fragile? This has been the funniest CNN news story since it happened at 12.30 this morning (NZ time). It was taken out of context 100% and shows just how desperate the Clinton News Network are to try and grab a cheap point. The MSM need to show both interviews, unadulterated.

This was Fake News in the extreme - which just continues to feed the idiot President's base. And I suspect it also took the focus away from other damaging things going on over the last 24 hours.

Why do so many people not see this?

Trump is wiping the Liberal floor with idiotic comments and every time you repeat these ad nauseum, his approval continues to slowly grow. Good grief, at this rate he could destroy the world and also get a second term, while those that hate him continue to defend each other in their social media comments and fail to recognize the real damage he is causing.

MSM? Main Stream Media?

I watch CNN. They are not the Trump channel. But they have discussions with pro Trump and anti Trump sides. Thats balanced. Fox is an embarrassment.

Trump may grow his support due to positive North Korean issues (although they are NOTHING to do with Trump). But its not hard to grow support when that support is low. I suspect the country that watched reality shows the most is the US, so ant growth in his popularity is not surprising.

I read yesterday that Trump said there are no trade wars. #pathetic  End of the day, the cream will rise to the top, and the lead will fall to the bottom

Main Stream Media = yes. And if you are watching CNN via NZ, you are watching the CNN International version. CNN (US) stream is 24 hours a day anti Trump, just like MSNBC (US feed). These two channels are just as bad, awful and obnoxious as FOX News (US) is in it's support of Trump.

The US media is disgusting. Trust me, there are NO balanced discussions on Trump on ANY US news channel, one way or the other. Social Media is not much better either, it is mostly regurgitated opinion.

That article about Trump WAS fake and twisted and could only be put together by some idiot Liberal 2nd grade CNN reporter. The article was fake, but yeah, Trump is an idiot. It is just a shame that MSM need to twist the truth and lower themselves to gutter levels to get their point across. Trump is such a bad example of the type of person that should be elected to the high office of President, there is no need to do that.

And that was my point. Repeating opinion without due consideration of the facts is just feeding into Trumps agenda. That, as I have said many a time in this thread is his strength. And that concerns me.
