I’m guessing that it’s too much to expect anyone in this thread to acknowledge the huge mistake that was made here?

No - I'll acknowledge it.

The photo(shopped) image above, that particular child wasn't separated from its parents.

There's also a huge and growing issue of how Trump & accomplices are "gaslighting" the US public, distracting them with and endless series of manufactured (or at least out of proportion) scandals which dilute the impact of real scandals and confuse the public.  Worse, issues like "tough on immigration" are populist vote-winners - look across the Tasman. Meanwhile, Trump continues to abuse his position of power.

To quote from a recent article in The Atlantic:

There is one Trump scandal. Singular: the corruption of the American government by the president and his associates, who are using their official power for personal and financial gain rather than for the welfare of the American people, and their attempts to shield that corruption from political consequences, public scrutiny, or legal accountability.

That should be enough to consign Trump and his crooked empire to the dustbin of history where he belongs.

Was the mistake the implicit assumption that Donald Trump would bother to go out and see any of these people?

Yeah... all that gaslighting and manufactured scandals...

All this over Trumps enforcement of policy that was introduced by the Democrats. Policy that Obama enforced. Policy that Hillary campaigned on continuing to enforce.

EDIT to add:

It’s also worth keeping some semblance of context here - this is not anti immigration, it is anti illegal immigration. Conflating the two issues does a massive disservice to the hundreds of thousands who entered the US lawfully.

Trump may very well be an egotistical pig, a buffoon in a position of immense influence.
But the hysteria being whipped up into to a frenzy by the media I believe is more dangerous and more potentially damaging in the long term than Trump could ever be.

In this particular case the photographer captured this image to illustrate a news story. The full story for that image was known and noted from the beginning. Personally I don't like this kind of use.

I can see it rises to potentially controversial in this case with a president who campained on Alex Jones.

{deleted propaganda meme from 4 Chan or whatever}

More fake news.  This isn't Breitbart.

Selectively quoting Clinton out of context to justify sadistic cruelty carried out by people you support is morally repugnant dishonest "whataboutism" of the worst kind:

In the exchange with CNN host and reporter Christiane Amanpour, Clinton was not speaking specifically about “dreamers,” children who were brought to the United States by their parents and until recently have been allowed to remain and work in the country, but children who were coming along borders on their own.

“Well, they should be sent back as soon as it can be determined who responsible adults in their families are, because there are concerns whether all of them should be sent back,” Clinton responded. “But I think all of them who can be should be reunited with their families.”

The only thing more dangerous would be an all-out nuclear war, and even that is not beyond the realm of possibility. I doubt Trump has the intelligence to be truly evil, though the ones manipulating him from the shadows certainly do, but there is no question that he is malicious.

As far as illegal immigration goes, the hyperbole is all from the hysterial right. These are not jihadist fighters who want to kill people. They are not even gang members. They are families fleeing from terror and violence. They are huddled masses yearning to breathe free. All they want is to find a peaceful life and to earn a basic living. I agree, though reluctantly, that borders cannot simply be flung open. The need is just too great and doing so would result in chaos and anarchy. But people should not be condemned just for trying to find a way through the barriers. Nothing is more human and understandable than wanting to make a better life for your children.

Oh FFS.  A liar from the Lying Whitehouse?  The truth? Really?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirstjen_Nielsen#Family_separation_policy

At a congressional hearing on May 15, 2018, Nielson testified that she would enforce the newly enacted Trump administration policy of separating parents and children who crossed over the U.S.–Mexico border, noting that similar separations happened in criminal courts "every day."

Trump's made it clear on his position about asylum seekers.

He thinks they are liars, and are not entitled to due process.

Damage control BS. Why are you so desperate to whitewash these evil sh!theads (as Godwin termed them)?

I don’t give a damn about the evil sh!theads. I just find it concerning that examples of dishonesty by the media in drumming up hate about the administration are so readily accepted as if the ends justify the means.

Personally, I find that this makes them as distasteful as the president himself.
