According to the BBC, Cohen may be about to flip. He is quoted in an American TV interview stating that family and country matter more to him than Trump does.

Don't be too confident that Cohen will truly flip.  These are dirty crooked untrustworthy people - experts in the art of lying and deceiving.

It would be a good tactic to state he'd put family and country ahead of loyalty to the God Emperor, then disclose as little to harm him as possible, defend Trump and deflect when evidence comes up.

If Cohen cuts a deal, he'll have balanced what he'll disclose vs various possible outcomes.  That'll include accepting blame for things he's either exempted from prosecution for under any deal he strikes - or when he's helped Trump "win" the "witch hunt", he'll be pardoned with great fanfare.

I wish it wasn't going to be like this, but I think the USA is now a lost cause for democracy and justice.

  • The bill has virtually no chance whatsoever of being enacted into law.

This is a truly ROFL sentence. Whoever wrote this is an idiot. There was no chance Trump would be President either.

I share your concerns but am not yet quite as pessimistic. Cohen may well do a deal. It depends a lot on things playing out that are not in the public arena. Trump has repeatedly shown himself to have no sense at all of the loyalty he demands from others. As soon as he thinks  there is nothing more to be squeezed from someone, he dumps them unceremoniously. He did this to Manafort and he is perfectly capable  of doing it to Cohen. He has no honour at all. Cohen must realise this and he may well be preparing to defend his own interests beyond just hoping for a presidential pardon.

For the rest, I see hope in two directions. There are a lot of Americans across the country who hate what Trump is doing and are prepared to stand against it, especially if pushed hard enough. Some of that was evident in the immigration demonstrations that just took place. And even now, not every politician in Washington is corrupt. There are many who are genuinely alarmed at what is happening and are prepared to do what it takes to turn things around. The mid-term elections may (or may not) be a watershed.

The other direction, and the one that probably gives me most hope at this time, is Trump's own blind stupidity. He has enormous capacity for shooting himself in the foot. He is constantly undercutting those who try to save him from himself. He is incompetent as well as stupid, and stubborn and vain on top of that. It is a potent combination. He is perfectly capable of such a massive F-up that even his most ardent supporters will stagger away in despair. He is truly  his own worst enemy, and that may be the country's salvation. His FART act is just a small sampler of what is possible.

To be fair, Cohen didn't say which country he was putting first. It may well be the one which has had journalists, critics, and opposition candidates all mysteriously falling into elevator shafts onto polonium tipped bullets left, right and centre over the last few years.

Just one little thought I had about the tweeting. For a very long time Trump used a Samsung S3 and at the same time talking about making things in the USA or at least by an American company. So why didn't he buy an Iphone? He may be using an Iphone now of course I don't know.

Nonono, all the iPhones are made in China, whereas only a minority of Samsung phones are. 50% of Samsung phones are made in Vietnam, which as we all know is totally not a communist country, and is therefore OK.

He's been using an iPhone for his twitter rants in recent times.  Was using an Android phone in the past.  Back then you could be close to 100% sure whether the tweets were from Trump or from his staff who used iPhones.  Now you need to guess based on how full of typos and vile personal insults they are.

And everyone thought that his nasty rambling lies on twitter could be part of his undoing.  Not yet...

The mongrels don't call him "GEOTUS" (God Emperor) for nothing - they believe it all and hang off every word.  If it's an incoherent rant to us, it's hidden meanings and evidence of genius to them.

Yes it is that bad.

The other possibility being suggested is that Cohen is facing some huge legal costs, and he's merely using the threat of "flipping" to try to get some funding from Trump for legal costs.

A lot of Americans hate Trump all right, "approval" polls only tell part of the story.  America is polarised, though Trumpists are still a minority and the WH knows it.

Forget Trump's individual incompetence, he's got a corrupt administration in place who'll back him - and they have no way out - so they'll go all the way.  If Trump fails - they're toast, the GOP is toast. There's no possibility that any of them can come out later saying "I was a Trumpist - but I've changed".

They are going to keep winning too. It's marvellous that there's a socialist democrat revival from an ideological POV - it's an utter disaster from a political POV. It'll lose them more "moderate" Democrat voters than it will win them votes from further left.

Fred99:

It's election day in Mexico.

A new president is certain (they only get one term).  There's one leader in the polls by a huge margin, from his policies he's not really looking like he's going to be a great friend for Trump:

Against CIA/FBI "war on drugs".  Apparently Mexico gets US$ 1.5 billion PA assistance.
A soft touch on Mexico's drug cartels - "hugs not drugs".
Against Mexico being responsible for stopping refugees at Mexico's Southern border - who are ultimately heading for the USA.
For using Mexico's 50 consulates in the USA as advocacy centres for immigrants.
Against the wall.
Somewhat of an economic socialist (this would make him an outright communist in America)  His promises are probably unachievable.
He's a social conservative of sorts, catholic of course, also a nationalist and populist.

I don't know if anybody knows how the hell it's going to work, but IMO it's not going to be good.

Yes, the opposite of Trump. Will be interesting. I think he landslided?

Agree. He is teetering on the edge. Doesnt really look like it, but he is. One wrong move and they will revolt. But, I see it lie bell curve, not much, not much, not much, then it starts. More importantly, the rest of the world isnt hugely affected, its a 4 year period that can be absorbed.

Yes - and an absolute majority (53% of the vote - 30 point clear winner).  Obrador isn't exactly the "opposite" of Trump though - they're both populists, so they have that in common.
