SaltyNZ:

As I understand it, since only half the Senate seats are up for grabs then even in the extremely unlikely event they were to win all of them they still would not have control of the Senate (because many of those seats are already held by a Democrat) so at least a handful of Republicans would need to put themselves in mortal career danger to end Trump.

Thanks. I thought it was far more of an issue, but it seems its actually not very relevant. If that's the case then maybe voter turnout will remain low as is usual, and not show a turn against Trump, which would strengthen him artificially

Yes, according to this, out of the 33 Senate seats up for election in November, 23 are already held by the Democrats.

Note there's nothing in the US constitution that says you can't indict a US President while in office. There memos from the Office of Legal Counsel, but they are just that: only memos not laws.

Yale University Law professor Oona Hathaway:

"A state Attorney General for instance could bring charges against the president while [the president's] in office, and would not be prohibited from doing that by the [Office of Legal Counsel memo]
"

'Michael Cohen’s lawyer has severely undermined to the case against Trump'
Washington Post
By Aaron Blake
August 27 at 2:38 PM

"One of the most bizarre aspects of the investigations engulfing the Trump administration is the lawyers involved. Here we have a presidency on the line, and this is Trump’s team? The top legal spokesmen for each side are … Rudolph W. Giuliani and Lanny Davis!?

Up until this point, though, Giuliani was the Great Contradictor and Davis was merely a colorful character. Now that has changed in a big way.

In a pair of new interviews with The Washington Post and BuzzFeed, Davis has backed off two massive claims he made in recent weeks, including that former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen had told people he witnessed President Trump being informed of Donald Trump Jr.'s 2016 Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer before it happened. He has also admitted he was the source for the initial report on that claim -- despite denying it last week.

'I should have been more clear — including with you — that I could not independently confirm what happened,' Davis told The Post of the claim, adding: 'I regret my error.'

Davis also backed off his claim, this time made on the record, that Cohen has information suggesting that Trump knew in advance about Russian hacking of Democrats’ emails in 2016. 'I am not sure,' Davis said. 'There’s a possibility that is the case. But I am not sure.'

And in the BuzzFeed interview, Davis acknowledged he was a source for the anonymously sourced CNN story that first reported on the Trump Tower claim -- despite having denied it last week by saying on CNN’s airwaves. 'I made a mistake,' he said of his denial, adding: 'I did not mean to be cute.' He claimed he didn’t lie but rather 'unintentionally misspoke.'

So what on earth is going on here? Davis, for his part, suggests that he was just speculating.

CNN - Debunking Donald Trump's latest conspiracy theory on Google

The playbook, by now, is familiar. Faced with a negative story - or stories - President Donald Trump uses his Twitter feed to float a conspiracy theory of some sort designed to distract and deflect.

On Tuesday, after weathering a self-inflicted wound caused by his unwillingness to acknowledge in any meaningful way the death of the late Sen. John McCain, Trump took to Twitter at 5:24 a.m. to send this message:

"Google search results for 'Trump News' shows only the viewing/reporting of Fake New Media. In other words, they have it RIGGED, for me & others, so that almost all stories & news is BAD. Fake CNN is prominent. Republican/Conservative & Fair Media is shut out. Illegal? 96% of results on 'Trump News' are from National Left-Wing Media, very dangerous. Google & others are suppressing voices of Conservatives and hiding information and news that is good. They are controlling what we can & cannot see. This is a very serious situation - will be addressed!"

So. The President of the United States is alleging a broad-scale conspiracy to filter news by the largest search engine in the world.

His "evidence"? That when he types "Trump News" into Google, it produces "only the viewing/reporting of "Fake News Media."

This is the essence of all conspiracy theories: You can't prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am wrong, so I just might be right!

The best conspiracy theories are perfect machines in that regard; any attempt to debunk them :

a) will necessarily come up short because definitive proof cannot and will not exist and
b) the very act of attempting to debunk will be seen as a surefire sign you are in on the conspiracy!

What if Trump did actually shoot someone on Fifth Avenue?

By Thomas Friedman
New York Times
29 August 2018

[satire]

September 3 (AP) - President Donald Trump stopped his motorcade in Manhattan today, jumped out of his limousine and shot a man on Fifth Avenue who was shouting anti-Trump epithets. The shooting was recorded by the White House press pool as well as by dozens of bystanders with mobile phones and by security cameras in the area. When asked for his reaction, House Speaker Paul Ryan said, "We will need more information than is available at this point."

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said through pursed lips that he "was not going to comment on every up and down with this president." House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes said he already had information indicating that the man whom Trump shot "worked for the Clinton Foundation and may have been a relative of former Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin."

Fox News did not cover Trump's shooting at the top of its broadcast, which focused instead on the killing of an Iowa woman by an undocumented immigrant. Fox's only reference to the fact that the president shot a man on Fifth Avenue was that "a New York City man died today when he ran right into a bullet fired by the president."

Senator Lindsey Graham quipped that "Trump shoots as well as he putts" and that this incident would not cause the South Carolina senator to cancel his coming golf round with the president at his Bedminster, New Jersey, course.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that she was looking the other way when the shooting happened so she had no comment, adding: "I haven't had a chance to discuss it with the president. I'll get back to you if I have something. But the president has stated many times that he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and get away with it. So he's just keeping a campaign promise. He did nothing wrong. There are no charges against him. And even though I have no comment, and he has no comment, we've commented on this extensively."

Hours later, though, the president tweeted: "Actually, some people are saying that a man who looked a lot like Barack Obama did the shooting. I'm not saying that - but some people are. It also could have been somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds who fired that shot. Like Rudy said: Truth is not truth - unless I say so."

Jerry Falwell Jr., a top evangelical leader, announced that his movement would be holding a vigil this evening, praying that the president had not stressed himself too much by having to shoot a man on Fifth Avenue. Falwell added, "This would never have happened if Jeff Sessions were doing his job."

The day ended with Education Secretary Betsy DeVos declaring that the fact that the president could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue in broad daylight "only proves again why we need to arm all our schoolteachers."

Author's comment: "My biggest challenge in writing all of the above? Worrying that readers wouldn't realise it was made up."

The world turns without Donald Trump.

For the first time since the end of World War II, Washington’s allies in the West as well as the East thumbed their noses at an American president. That made it a truly historic event.

Donald Trump warns privately of ‘violence’ if GOP loses midterms

President heard urging Christian ministers to sway voters and alluding to left-wing violence in leaked audio.

In a private meeting with Christian ministers, Donald Trump warned of “violence” if Republicans do not maintain control of Congress in the midterm elections, according to an audio recording of the meeting obtained by the New York Times.

At a state dinner for evangelical Christian ministers on Monday night at the White House, Trump urged religious leaders to use the power of their pulpits to make sure that “all of your people vote” in November, the New York Times reported.

“You’re one election away from losing everything you’ve got,” Trump reportedly told them.

He went on: “They will overturn everything that we’ve done and they’ll do it quickly and violently. And violently. There’s violence.
When you look at antifa, and you look at some of these groups, these are violent people.”

Trump’s comments appear to echo the rhetoric of political advertisements from the right-wing National Rifle Association.

Yes, its happening. Globally he hasn't set the world on fire, but he has steadily isolated the US. Trade they are looking elsewhere to reduce reliance on the US, and over time those new partnerships will grow. Militarily they are looking to new partners. NAFTA is a fail, NK is a fail, and he has divided his country. Just as cream rises to the top, molasses sinks to the bottom.

The irony of this is that Trump has spent most of his presidency systematically destroying everything that Obama has done, regardless of merit.
